Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Preparing for Actual Combat

Sigh, let's not talk about it. Take them back. Let them get familiar with the surroundings first; there's a good show waiting for them tonight," Dog Head Old Gao said.

"Yes!"

Having received the order, Grey Wolf led the members of Lone Wolf A Team toward Lin Mu and his group.

They had done a thousand push-ups before the Extreme Armed Cross-country Run, and had just run over thirty kilometers; many were already exhausted to the point of collapse.

It was time to let them go back and rest.

"Lin Mu, what on earth did you eat growing up?"

"First a thousand push-ups, then over thirty kilometers of running, and now you look like nothing even happened."

"To be honest, I feel like with your current state, running another ten kilometers wouldn't be a problem."

"Yeah, someone like Lin Mu can't really be called human anymore."

Hearing the bantering words around him, which contained a fair amount of complaining, Lin Mu felt absolutely nothing.

For these people, thirty kilometers had already exceeded their usual training volume.

But for a Special Forces Soldier, thirty kilometers was within the acceptable range.

Lin Mu's body had been modified; his physical fitness had long since surpassed that of a Special Forces Soldier.

So thirty kilometers really wasn't much of a deal for him.

"Lin Mu, don't take it to heart. They're just a bunch of guys whose heads got caught in a door, otherwise, who would come here?" Shi Dafan said as he put down his rucksack.

"Let's go. I'll take you to your living quarters now," Grey Wolf said as he led his men over.

After everyone entered the warehouse, what appeared before them were just some bunk beds, which were standard issue in the military.

"From today until the end of training, you will live here."

"Hurry up and organize your personal effects. Aren't you all supposed to be some damn Kings of Soldiers? I shouldn't need to teach you how to tidy up your quarters, right?"

"Report, is this a place for humans to live?" Zhuang Yan couldn't help but complain.

"Humans don't live here, Rookies do," Grey Wolf said.

"Alright, instead of wasting time, you'd better hurry up and tidy your quarters so you can rest early."

Seeing Lin Mu speak up, Zhuang Yan shut his mouth.

He didn't necessarily listen to others, but Zhuang Yan could take Lin Mu's words to heart; after all, Lin Mu was the person he admired most.

In their own units, these people were all called Kings of Soldiers.

But after witnessing Lin Mu's strength, they felt their so-called King of Soldiers status was nothing at all.

Furthermore, the military was always a place where strength did the talking. Having seen Lin Mu's prowess combined with his rank as a Lieutenant, they were convinced by his words.

"Hurry up and tidy your quarters. I'll take you for training at five tomorrow morning."

"By the way, find your own place for showers and the bathroom. The world is wide, plenty of room to operate."

After briefly explaining some precautions and seeing Lin Mu easily handle the Rookies, Grey Wolf nodded slightly and left, leaving the warehouse to the Rookies.

"Alright, hurry up and tidy up. Sleep as much as you can while you can. I reckon they definitely won't let us rest properly tonight."

"After all, the'show of force' this afternoon wasn't enough," Lin Mu said as he tidied his gear with maximum speed.

"Looking at your uniform and rank, are you Air Force?" Shi Dafan asked the paratrooper sharing his bunk bed.

"You have a good eye. Do you know what this is?" the man asked, pointing at his armband.

"A really big Ostrich, just with slightly short legs," Lin Mu said, glancing at the armband.

"This is an eagle, from the famous Eagle Division. I'm a paratrooper in the *** Company. My name is Deng Zhenhua, you can call me—" Deng Zhenhua was interrupted by Shi Dafan before he could finish.

"Call you Ostrich."

Everyone who was tidying up burst into loud laughter.

Time in the Wolf Fang Training Camp could be said to fly by. Before they knew it, the training period for Lin Mu and the others was nearing its end.

During this period of training, people were constantly being eliminated.

Happy Baby's military qualities were decent. Although his academic background was poor, with college students like Lin Mu and Zhuang Yan tutoring him, Happy Baby didn't drop out during the chemistry exam like in the original story.

"Wild Wolf, look at these two's grades. They're quite interesting," Grey Wolf said, looking at the results of the morning's chemistry exam.

"Whose?" Dog Head Old Gao asked.

"Happy Baby and Zheng Three Cannons." Grey Wolf handed the two exam papers to Dog Head Old Gao.

"Both got ninety points," Dog Head Old Gao said after a glance, leaning back in his chair with his eyes closed.

"I remember neither of these two has a high education level. Did they cheat?" Dog Head Old Gao asked.

"No, I watched them personally." Grey Wolf shook his head.

Grey Wolf's eyes lit up as he looked at Dog Head Old Gao. "Wild Wolf, do you want to talk to them now?"

"Yes, there's no time like the present. Might as well start with these two."

After a brief inquiry, Dog Head Old Gao and Grey Wolf learned the reason for Happy Baby and Old Cannon's high scores.

Old Cannon had learned it from a retired veteran combat engineer squad leader who was in charge of mountain blasting when he worked at the mines.

While Happy Baby didn't hide anything, he didn't tell the whole truth either. He just said he had asked around and found out the Special Forces would have a chemistry exam, so he asked Lin Mu and Zhuang Yan to tutor him.

Having received the answer, Dog Head Old Gao and Grey Wolf were even more satisfied with Lin Mu.

After two and a half months of observation, plus Happy Baby's answer, Dog Head Old Gao became even more firm in his idea of making Lin Mu the leader of Lone Wolf B Team.

As for Lin Mu, he had already become the captain of Rookie A Team by this time, a result of the members' unanimous election.

On the day the Wolf Fang Training Camp was about to end, Lin Mu led the members of Rookie A Team to assemble on the drill ground.

After the Jungle Survival phase, Lin Mu already knew why they were here today.

The final stage of the Wolf Fang Training Camp: the loyalty assessment.

"Why do you think we're assembling here? Surely it's not for a face-to-face confrontation with those Veterans," Ostrich said.

"Let's just wait and see. Stop talking, they're already here," Lin Mu said.

Ostrich's personality was naturally lively and restless. After spending so much time together, the entire Rookie A Team had grown used to it.

As soon as Lin Mu finished speaking, Grey Wolf arrived at the assembly point with the members of Lone Wolf A Team. Looking at the Rookies who didn't yet know what was about to happen, he smiled and said, "The reason I called you to assemble here today is for a joint exercise."

"And this afternoon's joint exercise is for tomorrow's actual combat."

"After the joint exercise is over, I will take you to the border region tonight. I'm going to let you experience real combat."

[I won't write about the content of the Wolf Fang Training Camp anymore; it's all training, and continuing would just be padding the word count. The protagonist's first battle in life is about to begin.]
