Chapter 38 - : A Quiet Night Beneath the Stars

The celestial gardens slowly returned to their usual calm after the strange chaos of the morning.

But for Aerion, nothing felt normal anymore.

He walked slowly along one of the floating bridges that connected the palace terraces, his hands resting lightly on the glowing rail made of crystal vines. Beneath him, the endless sky of the Realm stretched like a vast ocean of light, clouds drifting lazily far below the floating islands.

He exhaled deeply.

"…This place really knows how to mess with a man's heart."

The accidental kiss earlier still replayed in his mind.

Lyria's surprised expression.

Seraphyna's quiet, curious gaze.

And the fact that Aelira had witnessed everything.

Aerion rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.

"…I'm definitely going to hear about that again."

The soft breeze brushed through his hair, carrying faint echoes of music from somewhere in the distant palace halls.

Then a familiar voice spoke behind him.

"You look troubled."

Aerion turned.

Aelira stood a few steps away.

The Sovereign's silver hair shimmered softly in the dim evening light, flowing around her shoulders like liquid moonlight. Her presence was calm as always, but her eyes held a softness that hadn't been there when he first arrived in the Realm.

Aerion smiled faintly.

"Troubled might be a strong word."

Aelira walked closer, her steps graceful and quiet.

"Is it because of earlier?"

Aerion scratched his cheek.

"…You saw that."

"Yes."

"…All of it?"

"Yes."

He groaned quietly.

"Well… that's embarrassing."

Aelira didn't laugh.

Instead, she leaned against the crystal railing beside him, looking out at the endless sky.

"It was an accident," she said calmly.

Aerion blinked.

"…You're not angry?"

"Should I be?"

"Well… you're the Sovereign. And technically your friend and another goddess both kissed the same guy in your garden."

Aelira tilted her head slightly.

"When you say it like that, it does sound unusual."

Aerion chuckled awkwardly.

"Unusual is one word for it."

Silence settled between them.

But it wasn't uncomfortable.

The sky slowly shifted toward night, stars appearing one by one like tiny sparks across a dark canvas.

Aelira watched them quietly.

"Aerion."

"Hmm?"

"You attract attention."

He laughed softly.

"I've noticed."

Her silver eyes turned toward him.

"But not because you try."

"That's good, because I definitely wasn't trying."

A faint smile touched her lips.

For a moment neither of them moved.

Then Aelira stepped a little closer.

Close enough that Aerion could feel the gentle warmth of her presence.

"You seem overwhelmed," she said softly.

Aerion looked at her.

"A little."

"Why?"

He shrugged.

"Because I came here thinking I'd just paint, maybe explore a little."

"And now?"

"Now I'm stuck in the middle of a divine love triangle… or square… I'm not even sure anymore."

Aelira laughed quietly.

The sound was soft but genuine.

"You are not stuck."

"Feels like it."

Her gaze softened.

"No one here forces you to stay."

Aerion looked back out at the sky.

"I know."

The stars reflected faintly in his eyes.

"But I don't want to leave."

Aelira's breath caught slightly.

He continued quietly.

"I like it here."

"Because of the Realm?"

Aerion looked at her.

"No."

Her silver eyes widened slightly.

"…Because of you."

The words hung in the air like a quiet confession.

For a moment the world seemed to pause.

Aelira looked away, her expression thoughtful.

"You say things so easily."

Aerion chuckled.

"Trust me, it wasn't easy."

She turned back to him.

"You care about me."

"Yes."

"And the others?"

Aerion sighed.

"I care about them too."

"That sounds complicated."

"It is."

Aelira watched him carefully.

"But when I look at you… it's different."

Aerion's heart skipped.

"Different how?"

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"…Calm."

Aerion smiled softly.

"That's good, right?"

"Yes."

Another gentle breeze passed between them, carrying the faint scent of glowing flowers.

Without realizing it, Aelira's hand moved slightly closer to his on the railing.

Their fingers brushed.

Neither pulled away.

Aerion slowly turned his hand, letting their fingers intertwine naturally.

The moment felt simple.

But powerful.

Aelira looked down at their hands.

"You do this without hesitation."

Aerion shrugged.

"Should I hesitate?"

"Most people would."

"Well… I'm not most people."

She looked up again.

And this time her expression held something deeper.

Something vulnerable.

"Aerion."

"Yes?"

"Do you remember what you said about wishes?"

He nodded slowly.

"That I didn't want to use mine yet."

"And why?"

"Because what I wanted couldn't be forced."

Aelira stepped closer.

Very close now.

Her silver hair brushed lightly against his arm as the wind moved through it.

"And now?" she asked quietly.

Aerion looked into her eyes.

"I still feel the same."

The distance between them was barely a few inches.

Aelira's voice softened.

"You are very patient."

"I had to be."

"Why?"

"Because you were worth waiting for."

Her breath caught again.

For a moment she simply stared at him.

Then her free hand lifted slowly.

Her fingers gently touched his cheek.

The gesture was soft.

Almost shy.

Aerion leaned slightly into the touch without thinking.

The warmth of her hand sent a quiet thrill through him.

"You are dangerous," she whispered.

"Why?"

"Because you make me feel things I avoided for centuries."

Aerion smiled faintly.

"Sorry."

"You are not sorry."

"Okay… maybe not."

Aelira laughed quietly.

Then her gaze dropped briefly to his lips.

Aerion noticed.

His heartbeat quickened.

But this time he didn't rush.

He simply stayed where he was.

Letting the moment breathe.

Aelira leaned forward slowly.

Their foreheads touched first.

Then their noses brushed lightly.

Her voice was barely audible.

"You really are trouble."

Aerion whispered back.

"So I've been told."

Then—

Their lips met.

The kiss was soft.

Slow.

Not desperate.

Just warm and certain.

Aelira's hand moved from his cheek to the back of his neck, pulling him slightly closer.

Aerion's arm wrapped gently around her waist.

The stars above shimmered quietly as if watching.

For a long moment they simply stayed like that, sharing the warmth of the kiss beneath the endless sky.

When they finally pulled apart, their foreheads remained touching.

Aelira's silver eyes looked brighter than before.

"You see?" she whispered.

"See what?"

"Why the others are curious about you."

Aerion laughed softly.

"Curious might not be the right word."

"Perhaps not."

She didn't move away.

Instead she rested her head lightly against his shoulder.

The Sovereign of the Realm.

Leaning against him like someone who had finally found peace.

Aerion wrapped his arm around her gently.

Neither spoke.

They simply watched the stars together.

For the first time in centuries—

Aelira wasn't standing alone beneath them.

And for the first time since arriving in the Realm—

Aerion felt like he truly belonged.
