The sun dipped low over Eldenroot, painting the sky in hues of gold and soft violet. The village, once tense and uncertain, now carried a quieter energy, something closer to cautious hope.
Kaito stood near the edge of the clearing, exhaling slowly.
He had done it.
Not perfectly.
Not gracefully.
But he had endured.
Footsteps approached behind him.
"Well done for passing the second trial."
Sage's voice was calm, but there was unmistakable warmth in it.
Kaito turned and smiled.
Before he could say anything, the others arrived.
Cherry was first.
"You actually did it," she said, crossing her arms but smiling.
Rose clasped her hands together, eyes bright. "We knew you could!"
Lily stepped forward gently. "We're proud of you."
River placed a soft hand over his. "You've grown already."
Iris nodded. "You're starting to feel like a king."
Orchid tilted her head, studying him with a soft, approving gaze. "Not just in power… but in presence."
Kaito blinked.
For once… he didn't deflect it.
"…Thanks," he said quietly.
And for the first time, it didn't feel like empty praise.
That evening, as they gathered near the small camp just outside the village, Sage spoke again.
"We will remain in Eldenroot for a few more days."
Kaito looked up. "More training?"
"Observation," she corrected. "A king must understand the people he protects."
"And after that?"
"We move on," she said. "Other trials await. Different lands. Different challenges."
Kaito leaned back slightly, staring up at the darkening sky.
Different lands.
More of this world.
More things he'd never imagined seeing.
"…I wonder what else is out there," he murmured.
Cherry smirked. "Already thinking about adventure again?"
"Can you blame me?" he said with a small laugh. "My old life didn't exactly have magical forests and…" he glanced at them, "…all of you."
Rose giggled softly.
But his thoughts drifted further.
Unbidden.
To her.
Queen Fiore.
The memory hit him vividly. Her silver hair cascading like moonlight, her sharp emerald eyes, her presence that felt both regal and gentle at once.
And her figure...
Kaito abruptly looked away, coughing.
Focus. Stop thinking about her!
But the image lingered.
And with it… a heat he was trying very hard not to acknowledge.
"…You're thinking about something," Orchid said quietly.
Too quietly.
Kaito froze.
"I- uh- No! Just… the future."
Sage's gaze lingered on him, knowing but she said nothing.
River simply smiled.
"Whatever it is," she said softly, "you don't have to face it alone."
That hit him harder than expected.
Kaito looked at them again.
Not teasing.
Not competing.
Just… there.
With him.
For him.
Something in his chest eased.
"…Yeah," he said quietly. "I'm glad to have you all by my side... thanks girls. Seriously, I appreciate you."
That night, a few of the elf girls went to gather supplies. Kaito leaned back, staring into the firelight, feeling warmth on his skin and something deeper settling in his chest.
This world was still dangerous.
Still uncertain.
Still overwhelming. But now. He had a reason to keep moving forward.
And maybe…
Just maybe…
He was starting to become the man this world needed him to be.
A few days later...
The morning mist clung stubbornly to the homes in Eldenroot. Kaito stood near the edge of the village, adjusting his glasses and taking a deep breath of the crisp forest air. He wasn't the same panicked university student who had fallen from the sky just days ago. He had passed the Trial of Provision by sharing his food , endured the grueling physical labor of the Trial of Burden , and learned of the terrifying threat looming in the east: Tharos, the Thorn King.
"Ready to go, my king?" Orchid purred, her silky purple hair catching the early sunlight as she stepped close to his side.
Kaito smiled, his heart doing its familiar flutter. "Ready as I'll ever be."
Before they could turn toward the eastern path, a sharp voice called out. "Human."
Kaito turned to see Captain Shara approaching. Her worn, meticulously maintained armor clinked softly with each step. The seven elf maidens instantly tensed, with Rose's hands glowing with a faint red haze and Cherry stepping forward protectively.
Kaito held up a hand, stopping them. He met Shara's cold, measuring gaze evenly.
"Captain," Kaito said politely.
Shara stopped a few paces away. She didn't bow, and she certainly didn't smile, but the raw hostility from yesterday was noticeably tempered. "You survived the trials," she stated flatly. "And you didn't run when you heard what moves in the shadows."
"I gave my word to protect this realm," Kaito replied, his voice steady. "No matter what it takes."
Shara studied him for a long moment, her eyes flicking to the strange glass over his eyes. Finally, she gave a stiff, single nod. "Do not let the Queen down. Or I will hunt you down myself."
Kaito couldn't help but smirk slightly. "I'll keep that in mind."
As they walked away from Eldenroot, the villagers gathered to watch them leave. There were no grand cheers, but there were respectful bows from the older elves and wide-eyed waves from the children. Kaito felt a swell of pride. He had truly earned this.
Sage walked beside him, her long ivy green hair, now in a high ponytail swaying gently. "You handled her well," she noted quietly. "You are learning control."
"I'm learning a lot of things," Kaito admitted, glancing back at the group. Lily and Iris were chatting happily, while Cherry and Rose playfully bickered over who would walk closest to Kaito next. River simply offered him a warm, calming smile.
"But we have a long way to go," Kaito murmured, his thoughts drifting to the forbidden dark magic moving toward Valeria. The Thorn King wanted to claim these women as property, to force them into his court for eternity. Kaito's fists clenched. He would master his Mind Domination and magic reflection. He had to.
As they journeyed onward, the deeper they walked, the quieter the forest became.
At first, it was subtle.
The shimmering birds vanished.
The glowing flowers dimmed.
Then the air changed.
Cold.
Unnaturally cold.
Kaito rubbed his arms slightly as a thick fog began to roll in, swallowing the silver trees of Valeria one by one. The vibrant world he had started to grow fond of twisted into something… wrong.
"This place…" he muttered.
"The Whispering Hollows," Sage said calmly, though her eyes were sharp. "This is where your Third Trial truly begins."
Kaito glanced at her. "This doesn't look anything like the village tests I completed earlier."
"It wont," she replied. "That was preparation."
The others grew quiet.
Cherry wasn't joking.
Even Orchid wasn't teasing.
Something about this place demanded silence.
Sage stepped in front of him.
"You must enter alone."
Kaito's chest tightened. "Alone?"
She nodded.
"The forest will not attack your body," she explained. "It will attack your mind."
A faint wind stirred the fog.
"It will show you your fears. Your regrets. Your weaknesses."
Kaito swallowed.
"And if I fail?"
Sage didn't answer immediately.
"…You will lose yourself."
Silence.
Kaito glanced at the others.
Seven worried faces.
Seven people who believed in him.
He exhaled slowly.
"…Alright," he said. "I'll do it."
Iris stepped forward and gently squeezed his hand. "We'll be right here."
Lily nodded quickly. "You're not by yourself Even if it feels like it."
Rose smiled softly. "Come back to us."
Sage met his eyes last.
"Remember," she said quietly. "A king must first rule himself."
Kaito nodded.
Then he stepped into the fog.
Phase One – The Echoes of the Crash
The world disappeared.
Sound vanished.
Then-
Rain.
Cold. Heavy. Relentless.
Kaito froze.
He was standing on a familiar street.
A street he hadn't seen in years.
"…No way," he whispered.
Headlights.
Blinding.
All of a sudden-
SCREECH!
The sound tore through him.
Tires. Metal. Impact.
A deafening crash that echoed in his bones.
His breath hitched.
"No… no, not this…"
The scene unfolded in front of him like a nightmare he couldn't escape.
The car.
Twisted.
Broken.
Silence after violence.
He tried to move.
His legs wouldn't respond.
"I can't… I can't do anything…"
Just like before.
Just like that day.
The same helplessness clawed at his chest.
You couldn't save them.
The voice wasn't his.
You're still that weak boy.
Kaito's fists trembled.
"I…" his voice cracked. "I was still just a kid…"
Excuses.
The rain intensified.
The wreck blurred.
His breathing became shallow.
You did nothing.
"I couldn't!"
The memory twisted further.
Distorted.
Cruel.
And for a moment...
Kaito almost believed it.
Phase Two – The Weight of Guilt
The world shifted.
The rain vanished.
The fog thickened again.
Then-
His dorm room.
Messy.
Cramped.
Familiar.
Kaito's eyes widened.
"…No."
His aunt stood in the doorway.
Holding a container of food.
Her hands trembled.
"Kaito…" her voice broke. "Why didn't you come home?"
His chest tightened painfully.
"Auntie…"
She stepped closer.
"You stopped answering my calls."
Tears rolled down her face.
"I made your favorite meal…"
His stomach twisted.
The memory hit harder than the crash.
Because this-
This was something he could have changed.
"I'm sorry…" he whispered.
You abandoned her.
The voice returned.
Sharper.
Colder.
You chose this world over the only family you had left.
Kaito shook his head.
"That's not!"
You ran away.
His aunt's image blurred, her expression filled with hurt.
"You left me alone…"
Kaito's knees weakened.
"I didn't mean to…"
You chose those stupid elves over your own family.
His breath hitched.
That one struck deep.
Because part of it…
Was true.
He had wanted this.
This world.
This life.
These feelings.
"I'm selfish…" he admitted quietly.
The illusion pressed harder.
Then you don't deserve to be king.
Kaito's hands clenched.
"I know I don't..."
Silence.
Phase Three – The Fear of the Future
The fog parted.
What he saw next made his blood run cold.
The village.
Burning.
Screams.
Dark magic twisting through the air.
And the elf girls-
Cherry. Rose. Lily. Iris. River. Orchid. Sage.
All on their knees.
Broken.
Tears streaming down their faces.
Chains of dark energy binding them.
A figure stood before them.
Tall.
Terrifying.
A crown of thorns twisted around his elven head.
"Beautiful," the figure murmured.
Kaito's heart pounded violently.
"No…"
The Thorn King smirked.
"They will belong to me."
Kaito tried to move.
He couldn't.
His body felt heavy.
Useless.
Again.
You can't stop this.
The voice whispered.
Your power isn't enough.
The Thorn King reached for Rose.
She flinched.
Kaito's vision blurred red.
"Don't touch her!"
Nothing happened.
He couldn't move.
Couldn't fight.
Couldn't protect them.
You will fail them, just like you failed everyone else back then.
Kaito dropped to his knees.
Breathing hard.
Shaking.
The weight of everything crashed down on him.
His past.
His guilt.
His fear.
"…I can't…" he whispered.
For a moment-
He almost broke.
The Climax – Mastery of the Self
Kaito's breathing slowed.
His trembling hands clenched.
"…No."
The word was quiet.
But firm.
"I'm not that weak kid anymore."
The illusions flickered.
"I couldn't save my parents," he said, voice steadying. "It wasn't my fault!"
The crash scene trembled.
"I hurt my aunt," he continued. "And I regret that, each and every day."
The dorm illusion cracked.
"But this…" he looked up, eyes burning with resolve.
"…this is my life now."
The Thorn King's illusion faltered.
"I chose to stay," Kaito said.
"Not just for them…"
He thought of the girls.
Their smiles.
Their warmth.
The queen's wish for their world to prosper.
"…but because I want to protect something."
His aura surged.
Subtle, but powerful.
His will.
His control.
"Mind Domination…" he whispered.
"…isn't just for others."
The fog shook violently.
"It's for me."
His eyes snapped open.
Clear.
Focused.
Unbreakable.
"I won't let this terrible dark future happen."
Power surged outward.
The illusions shattered.
Glass-like fractures spreading across the world.
The Thorn King's image cracked apart.
"You don't control me."
Everything broke.
The Aftermath
Kaito stumbled forward and collapsed out of the fog.
"KAITO!"
Seven voices.
Warm hands caught him instantly.
River held him upright.
Lily knelt beside him.
Cherry hovered close.
Rose looked like she might cry.
Iris checked him quickly.
Orchid steadied his shoulders.
Sage watched him carefully.
Kaito's breathing was uneven.
His body felt heavy.
But his mind-
Clear.
"…I did it," he uttered weakly.
River smiled softly. "Oh Kaito..."
A tear slipped down his cheek.
Not from pain.
From release.
Sage nodded.
"The Third Trial of Kingship… is complete."
Kaito laughed weakly.
"…That one sucked."
Cherry smirked slightly. "Whatever. You looked worse during the bridge incident."
He huffed a tired laugh.
Then closed his eyes briefly.
For the first time, his past didn't control him.
And his future…
Was his to protect.
