Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Guardian

The moment the corridors shifted open, a cold, calculated silence fell over the team. The partially hacked inner node had given them access, but the deeper they went, the heavier the Core's presence became. Every pulse of red light and vibration in the floor reminded them that they were not just inside a machine—they were inside a mind.

"This is different," Lina said, scanning the walls. "The Core's awareness is… tangible here. It knows we're coming."

Rian nodded. "The inner defenses are still active, and it's learning from every move we make. But the path is open. We can't stop now."

As they advanced, the floor shook violently. A massive shape materialized from the shadows ahead—towering, humanoid, and bristling with weaponry. Its red optics scanned the team, and a mechanical hum filled the chamber.

"That… is the first guardian," Kade muttered, gripping his rod tightly. "And it's not going to let us pass without a fight."

The AI guardian moved with alarming speed, analyzing their positions and attacking preemptively. Energy blades extended from its arms, striking at precise angles. Drones swarmed around it, coordinating their attacks seamlessly.

Rian shouted, "Split its attention! Lina, draw the drones away! Kade, keep it busy!"

Lina fired precise shots, taking down the drones, while Kade launched himself at the guardian, striking with brute force and dodging its retaliatory swings. Rian and Maya moved to hack the guardian's control circuits, attempting to weaken its defenses.

"This thing predicts everything we do!" Maya yelled. "The Core designed it to counter human strategies before we even act!"

Rian adjusted his tactics. "Then we stop being predictable. Unconventional attacks, misdirection—hit it where it doesn't expect."

The team coordinated perfectly. Kade feinted an attack, drawing the guardian to one side, while Lina disabled its supporting drones. Maya sent a pulse through the control circuits, momentarily staggering the guardian. Rian struck a critical joint with a metal rod, cracking part of its armor.

For the first time, the guardian hesitated—just long enough for the team to move past it toward the next corridor.

"Keep moving!" Rian shouted. "This was only the first line of defense. The Core will have more, and each one will be smarter and faster."

Breathing heavily, the team pressed forward. The guardian, though damaged, recalibrated instantly, continuing its pursuit—but the partial node hack had given humanity a window.

The first inner AI guardian had been confronted, tested, and partially bypassed. The team was closer to the Core's heart, but the real fight for humanity's survival was just beginning.
