Chapter 42 - The Veil of Betrayal

The echoes of the celebration still lingered in the palace air, but within King Julian's private chambers, the silence was so heavy it felt suffocating. Sir Alistair, who had been Sofia's silent shadow for days, had returned with a truth that was about to shake the very foundations of the throne.

Alistair's Testimony

Upholding the strictest royal decorum, Sir Alistair bowed deeply before the King. His face held no joy, and his eyes were hollow.

"Your Majesty," Alistair's voice was leaden. "I have fulfilled my duty of loyalty. But what I have witnessed is a dark omen for our kingdom."

King Julian leaned forward, his heart beginning to race. "Speak plainly, Alistair. Did you see her leave the palace at night?"

"Not just leave, Your Majesty," Alistair took a steadying breath. "I saw her wield powers that are not of this world. Her speed is faster than lightning, her eyes hold a supernatural crimson glow... and the most terrifying truth, My King..." He paused for a moment, his voice dropping to a whisper, "Princess Sofia is no human... She is a Vampire."

At these words, King Julian felt as though the floor had vanished beneath him. He struck the table in a fit of rage and disbelief. "Impossible! Sofia? The woman who gave our family so much love? Who saved Ethan's life? What are you saying, Alistair? Do you have proof?"

Alistair produced a silk handkerchief from his pocket, stained with dark, nearly black blood. "This is the blood of a creature she neutralized last night. She was fighting the vampires that infiltrated the city, but she could fight them only because she is one of them. Your Majesty, her skin is cold, she avoids the sun, and her secret is now bare before us."

King Julian's face turned pale as ash. He remembered Cable's defensive words, Sofia's mysterious smiles, and the 'miracle' that healed Ethan. Everything began to fall into a terrifying perspective.

"If this is true," the King's voice trembled with fear and anger, "then the future of Eldrida is in peril. My son is living with a monster!"

Alistair bowed. "Command me, Your Majesty. We must protect the Prince from this deception."

King Julian closed his eyes, torn between his son's happiness and his duty to the realm. "Prepare to seize Sofia... but with extreme caution. Prince Cable must not know of this yet."

Just as King Julian and Sir Alistair were finalizing the plan to seize Sofia, a chorus of screams erupted throughout the palace. Glass windows shattered, and torches flickered out one by one. A massive horde of vampires had breached the outer defenses and stormed the inner sanctum.

Chaos and Royal Commands

Panic seized the court. King Julian drew his sword, shouting, "Soldiers! Get the Queen and the Princess to the safe rooms! Liam, save Victoria!"

Liam positioned his shield in front of his wife, "Get Victoria inside now!"

A phalanx of guards surrounded Queen Ava, the Princess, the pregnant Victoria, and Sofia, ushering them toward the inner corridors. But as they reached the grand hallway, a massive, grotesque vampire crashed through the ceiling, landing right in their path. Its eyes burned like glowing embers, and its screech curdled the blood of the bravest men.

Sofia's Transformation

The soldiers lunged at the beast, but with a single swipe, he hurled them against the stone walls like ragdolls. The creature turned its hungry gaze toward a trembling Victoria. Liam and Cable were still occupied fighting off others in the outer hall.

Seeing Victoria in mortal danger, something snapped inside Sofia. The time for hiding was over.

"Get back!" Sofia's voice was no longer human.

As the creature lunged for Victoria, Sofia moved with a speed that defied the laws of nature. Deep crimson flooded her irises, her fangs elongated, and her features sharpened into a terrifying beauty. She stood revealed in her True Vampire Form.

The Deadly Duel

The attacking vampire recognized her instantly. "Princess Sofia? You protect these mortals?"

Sofia didn't waste words. With supernatural strength, she caught the beast by the throat and lifted him into the air. A brutal struggle ensued. Sofia's movements were a blur of shadows and violence. She tore through the creature's defenses, her claws shredding its hide, before slamming it onto the marble floor with bone-shattering force.

Queen Ava and Victoria watched in stunned silence, paralyzed by fear and awe. Sofia, whom they had known as a gentle daughter-in-law, stood before them as a harbinger of death.

At that moment, Cable and King Julian burst into the hallway. What they saw froze them in their tracks: Sofia, in her full, terrifying glory, stood victorious over the fallen demon.

The battle in the palace corridor was feral. Sofia struck at the monstrous vampire with supernatural precision. In a desperate final act, the beast lunged at Sofia, hurling her toward the stone wall. Sofia stabilized herself and launched a powerful counter-attack, but in the chaotic blur of movement, her hand struck Victoria.

Sofia's claws, now as sharp and hard as tempered steel, left a deep, jagged wound across Victoria's abdomen.

Victoria's Scream

Victoria collapsed to the floor with a heart-wrenching scream. Liam, who had just burst into the hallway, lost all sense of reality upon seeing his wife. "Victoria!" he cried out, gathering her into his arms. Blood began to spread rapidly across her white silken gown.

When King Julian and Sir Alistair witnessed this, their suspicion turned into cold, hard hatred. "Do you see, Cable?" the King roared. "She is a beast! She has harmed our future heir!"

Cable stood paralyzed. He could see the absolute horror in Sofia's eyes; he knew this was never her intent. Sofia's hands were trembling, her face pale with overwhelming guilt. "No... Victoria... I didn't mean to..." she whispered, her voice cracking.

The Order to Seize

Sir Alistair unsheathed his sword and barked at the soldiers, "Surround her! Seize this vampire at once! Throw her into the deepest dungeon!"

The guards lowered their spears, closing in on Sofia. Cable tried to intervene, "Stop! It was an accident!" but King Julian shoved him back. "Stay back, Cable! Today, her deception ends."

Sofia saw the searing hatred in Liam's eyes, the King's lethal intent, and a dying Victoria. She realized that if she stayed, Cable would be forced to spill the blood of his own family for her sake.

Vanishing into the Dark

"Forgive me, Cable..." Sofia whispered, her voice barely a breath. A single, crimson tear rolled down her cheek.

Before the soldiers could lay a hand on her, Sofia threw her arms wide. For a split second, every torch in the room flickered out, and a thick, unnatural black mist filled the air. When the light returned, Sofia was gone. She had vanished into the shadows, fleeing the palace into the night.

Left behind were a blood-soaked Victoria, a shattered Liam, a vengeful King, and a lonely, broken Cable.
