"You've hidden very well, sister," Deena's voice came from behind her, too close, too soft.
Chloe didn't raise her head. "What sister are you calling?" she asked back, acting clueless. Her hands kept moving, brushing dirt off the ginseng root like she had all the time in the world.
Deena looked at Chloe, who was busy digging ginseng, and moved closer to where she crouched. Her shadow fell over Chloe's hands.
"You weren't told that I can see past anything?" Deena asked, amused. Her eyebrows raised smugly, and there was a glint in her eyes that Chloe didn't like.
Chloe's hands paused. She studied Deena's smug grin for a moment, weighing it, before continuing her work. She dug the tool in deeper, pretending the root mattered more than whatever game Deena was playing.
"Didn't they tell you not to expose your secrets and call anyone 'sister' in public?" Chloe asked back. Her voice stayed flat. She wasn't giving Deena the satisfaction of a reaction.
