A few moments later, several guards dragged Jaxon Talon in. One of them kicked the back of his knees, and he fell forward with a grunt.
His hair was disheveled, his clothes were torn and stained with dirt and dried blood. His shoulders now sagged with exhaustion. Several bruises darkened his jaw, arms, and legs. I grinned maniacally. The joy that was flooding me was so pure it almost made me dizzy.
Groaning, Jaxon lifted his head defiantly. Then, as soon as our gazes met, he recoiled as if struck and scrambled backward slightly. How refreshing it was to see him crawling at my feet.
Meanwhile, the guards and taskmasters who had brought him fell to their knees, trembling.
"Alpha," one of them began quickly, not daring to meet my gaze. "Forgive us for troubling you with such a trifling matter. We believed the Beta would handle it, but—"
