Chapter 28 - Easy Caught 16

The old man's fists kept landing, relentless and precise. Kael's legs shook with every impact, his inner shadow repeating the strikes perfectly, but even the mirror could not relieve the exhaustion pressing on him. Every blow left him trembling, sand clinging to sweat-slicked skin, chest heaving. He tried to rise, again and again, but his body protested, each movement slower, heavier.

Nixxin's eyes narrowed. Enough. He had expected the old man to be strong, but this level of endurance, this focus, was beyond what he had prepared Kael for. The boy wasn't just tired; he was on the edge of collapse.

Without hesitation, Nixxin sprinted forward, calculating distance, wind, and timing in a single heartbeat. Kael's legs faltered under the pressure, and Nixxin grabbed him by the shoulders, lifting him almost effortlessly. "Hold tight!" Nixxin shouted, and Kael barely had the strength to respond.

Together they bolted, sand spraying behind them with every step. The old man paused for a moment, assessing the movement, but Nixxin's speed and the unpredictability of retreat pulled them out of his immediate range. Kael stumbled, catching Nixxin's arm for balance. His chest burned, each breath a sharp stab, but he trusted Nixxin completely. If anyone could save me here, it's him.

The forest approached, a wall of dark green and brown. Branches loomed, roots twisted across the ground, but Nixxin navigated effortlessly, guiding Kael between obstacles, slowing only to steady him when he nearly tripped. Sand gave way to fallen leaves, crunching under their feet as they pressed forward.

Kael finally fell to his knees behind a thick trunk, sweat dripping from his forehead. "I… I can't…" he gasped. His voice trailed off, chest rising and falling violently. Every muscle ached. His fingers trembled as he pressed them into the soil.

Nixxin crouched beside him, steadying him with a firm grip on his shoulder. "You're not done yet," he said firmly. "You're alive. That's what matters. We're moving now." His voice was calm, but his mind raced. We need to get him out before the old man recovers fully.

A rustle of movement made both of them freeze. Lira emerged from the shadows, eyes wide and trembling, hands clasped to her chest. Her face was pale under the moonlight, lips quivering. "Kael! Nixxin! I... I thought… I thought you were gone!" Her voice broke with fear, and she took a hesitant step closer.

Kael's chest heaved, sweat dripping into his eyes. He tried to straighten, forcing a small, unconvincing smile. She shouldn't see me like this, he thought. His arms were still shaking, legs weak. Every breath reminded him of the fight, of how close he had come to collapse.

"We're fine," Nixxin said firmly, though the words felt thin. "We're not out of danger, but you're safe now."

Lira sank to her knees beside them, still trembling. "I was so scared… I didn't know what to do. I thought… I thought I'd lose you both." Her voice was quiet, almost a whisper, but Kael felt it in his chest.

Kael looked at her, still catching his breath, and gave a faint nod. "We're alive," he said softly. The words were simple, but heavy with everything he had endured.

Nixxin's expression hardened. He stepped forward, placing a hand on the ground and summoning the Blessed Key. The air seemed to pulse around it, a faint shimmer radiating from the object in his palm. He focused, muscles tensed, energy flowing from him into the Key. This has to work. I don't have time for mistakes.

The Key vibrated slightly, responding to his intent. The space in front of him bent, quivering as if unsure of the shift. Kael watched, still trembling, while Lira leaned forward, eyes wide. "What… what are you doing?" she whispered.

"It's Datora," Nixxin said quietly, voice firm. "A gate. It will summon Ardent. It will clear the island. But I have to focus completely." His eyes narrowed, fingers tightening around the Key. The energy pulsed faster, brighter, the air thickening.

Kael's chest rose and fell rapidly. He felt the tension in every muscle, his legs trembling, arms still weak. Yet he tried to rise slightly, trying to steady himself. I need to be ready. If this fails… He didn't finish the thought.

Lira's voice broke the silence again. "I...I don't understand, I can't see anything you're talking about." Her hands trembled as she pressed them together. "You two… you almost…" She couldn't say it, couldn't voice what she had feared all along.

Kael reached a shaking hand toward her, a faint gesture of reassurance. "We made it this far," he said softly. "We're here. That's what matters." His voice was weak, but it carried a thread of determination.

Nixxin adjusted his grip on the Key, energy now forming a thin shimmering gate in the air before them. The forest itself seemed to hold its breath, waiting. Branches bent slightly under invisible pressure. Leaves twitched, sand stirred. Kael's gaze followed the light, awe mixed with exhaustion, and he felt a small spark of hope.

The gate stabilized, energy humming steadily. Nixxin's jaw tightened. "Kael, Lira. Stay close. Nothing leaves this forest until we pass through."

The two nodded, hearts still racing. Kael's legs quivered as he rose with Nixxin's support. Lira clutched at his sleeve, eyes wide, fear and relief battling for dominance.

Nixxin lifted the Key higher, and the gate's shimmer solidified. Space bent sharply, colors folding inward, a subtle vibration in the air as Datora's presence became undeniable. The forest seemed to stretch toward it, responding to its energy.

Kael took a deep breath, chest still tight, muscles screaming in protest. He glanced at Lira, saw her trembling, and felt a sudden weight of responsibility.

Nixxin nodded to them, and together they stepped forward. The air rippled around them, reality bending as they crossed the threshold. The forest, the sand, the remnants of the old man's attack—all fell away behind them, leaving only the shimmering gate and the sense of movement, of escape, of hope.

Kael's legs felt heavy, his arms weak, but he pressed on. Lira followed closely, gripping his sleeve, trembling but alive. Nixxin led the way, Key glowing, steady. And as they crossed fully into the gate, Kael felt the tension in his body ease slightly.

The forest was left behind. The danger still lingered in memory, but for now, they were safe.
