Chapter 6 - Unexpected day off

The drive back from the restaurant was quieter than the ride there, but the tension between them was electric. Nuha sat in the passenger seat, hands folded neatly in her lap, trying not to fidget with her scarf. Her mind was still racing from the lunch meeting, especially the client compliment and the brief, almost possessive look Rayyan had thrown her way.

Rayyan started the car, his eyes on the road, his hands steady on the wheel. "Did you find the discussion productive?" he asked, voice calm and measured.

"Yes, sir," Nuha replied, trying to keep her voice steady. "Everything went smoothly. I… I took detailed notes and confirmed the follow-ups."

He gave a small nod. "Good. That's what I expect. Accuracy is important."

She smiled politely, then hesitated. "Sir… thank you again… for earlier… with the office, the schedule, and… everything."

Rayyan's eyes flicked toward her, just briefly. A tiny smirk curved at the edge of his lips. "You don't need to thank me for expecting professionalism, Miss Nuha."

Nuha's cheeks warmed. "I… I just mean… you were thoughtful, that's all."

He tilted his head slightly, playful in the most subtle way. "Thoughtful can be interpreted in many ways," he said quietly, his eyes meeting hers for a split second before returning to the road.

Her heart skipped a beat. Did he just… flirt? She pressed her lips together to hide the smile threatening to break out.

Small Teasing Moments

The city streets blurred past as Nuha tried to focus on the passing cars instead of Rayyan's presence beside her.

"You seemed… distracted during the meeting," he said suddenly, voice casual but pointed.

"I… was focused," she said quickly, realizing she sounded defensive. "Really, sir. Everything was fine."

"I see," he said, a faint edge of amusement in his voice. "Focused enough to let the client ask for your number?"

Nuha's eyes widened. "Sir..!"

He raised a hand, mock-serious. "Relax. I'm not scolding you. Just… observing."

Her stomach fluttered at the tone. "Observing?" she repeated softly, unsure whether she should laugh or be embarrassed.

"Yes," he said smoothly, glancing at her briefly. "It's my job to know everything going on in the office. Even when it's… not directly work-related."

Nuha's pulse raced. Not directly work-related… Her mind immediately jumped to the compliment, the number, the way he had watched her all lunch. She fumbled with her bag nervously.

The light at a nearby intersection turned red. Rayyan slowed the car, and for a brief moment, he let the quiet linger between them.

"Your scarf," he said suddenly, his voice soft, low. Nuha looked down, startled. "It's not sitting properly. You'll ruin it if you keep fiddling."

She froze. "I… I'm okay," she murmured, unsure whether she should adjust it herself.

He reached over gently, not enough to touch her face directly, but enough to straighten the scarf with precision. "There. That's better."

Her heart thudded violently in her chest. He just… touched it… barely, but…

"Thank you," she said softly, words barely audible.

"You're welcome," he replied smoothly, eyes back on the road. But Nuha noticed the faint smirk tugging at his lips, and her chest tightened. He's enjoying this, isn't he?

As they drove, Rayyan kept up a low, teasing rhythm, carefully professional but with hints of playful attention.

"You handled yourself well today," he said, tone neutral, yet there was a warmth beneath it.

"Thank you, sir," she said, trying not to blush. "I… I was nervous, but… I think it went fine."

"Good," he replied smoothly. "Confidence suits you."

Her stomach flipped. "I… I don't know if I..."

He cut her off gently, almost teasing: "Do not tell me that you're nervous in front of me, Miss Nuha. I might start thinking you're… unsettled."

She blinked. "Unsettled?"

"Yes," he said dryly, eyes still forward, voice calm. "Distracted. Flustered. That sort of thing."

Nuha bit her lip to hide a smile. "I'm not flustered."

"Hmm," he said, letting the single syllable hang in the air, which made her pulse race. "You're lying."

They turned onto the avenue leading to the office. Nuha's mind was spinning. Every word, every glance, every subtle gesture, the way he adjusted her scarf, the way he teased her about being flustered, made her feel simultaneously giddy and anxious.

He's professional… but there's something else there. Something… personal.

Rayyan, meanwhile, kept his eyes on the road, but internally, he was aware of every small motion she made. The way she sat, her fingers nervously tapping on her bag, the faint blush creeping along her cheeks, it all made him want to tease her more, but carefully. She's mine to protect, not to flaunt, he reminded himself.

They reached the office building. Rayyan slowed the car, turning to her. "Miss Nuha, I expect you to remain alert for the afternoon tasks. There may be urgent emails or client requests."

"Yes, sir," she said softly, trying to steady her racing heart.

He nodded once, then added, just quiet enough for her to hear: "And… stay confident. It suits you."

Nuha blinked, heart nearly stopping. Confident… suits me? Did he just… compliment me?

"Y-Yes, sir," she stammered, words barely above a whisper.

Rayyan gave a subtle smirk, the corner of his lips tilting just enough to make her pulse leap, and stepped out of the car. Without another word, he walked toward the building, leaving her sitting in the car, cheeks flushed, hands trembling slightly, and heart pounding with the fluttering realization: he wasn't just professional… and she was hopelessly aware of it.

The office was quiet. Most of the employees had left hours ago, leaving only the faint hum of the AC and the occasional click of a keyboard as Nuha tidied her desk. She stacked her notes, filed documents, and double-checked that everything was in order.

Her mind still replayed the lunch meeting and the drive back. The way Rayyan had adjusted her scarf, his subtle teasing, and that brief, intense glance, they had left her heart fluttering nonstop.

She sighed softly, stretching her arms above her head. "Finally," she muttered under her breath. "Time to go home and… actually rest."

As she began placing her bag by her chair, the door to her office clicked open. She looked up, and there he was.. Rayyan, calm as ever, suit impeccable, yet something in his expression made her pause.

"Miss Nuha," he said, voice low and even. "Still here?"

She smiled nervously. "Yes, sir… I wanted to make sure everything was finalized before leaving."

He walked closer, eyes scanning the papers on her desk before landing on her. "Good. I wanted to let you know something."

Nuha tilted her head curiously. "Something, sir?"

"Yes," he said, leaning slightly against the doorframe. "Tomorrow… you don't need to come in."

Her eyes widened. "I… I don't need to come in?"

"No," he said, voice calm but firm. "I've settled everything with the teams, ensured all urgent tasks are assigned, and informed the higher-ups that the office will run smoothly without you. You… should rest."

Nuha's mouth opened, then closed again. She blinked at him, unable to speak immediately. "You… you mean I get the day off? Just like that?"

Rayyan's lips quirked ever so slightly. "Yes. You've been working hard… more than anyone notices. I won't pretend I don't see it. Resting is… required."

She felt a rush of warmth, her chest tightening. "Thank you… sir. Really. I… I appreciate it."

He nodded once, perfectly composed. "Good. Don't let anyone call you unnecessarily. Focus on yourself tomorrow."

Nuha's pulse raced. The way he spoke.. calm, professional, yet undeniably personal made her feel seen in a way no one else had ever done. She forced a small, polite smile.

Professional… but so personal, she thought. And yet I feel like my heart might actually skip a beat just hearing him say it.

Rayyan straightened, smoothing his tie. "That's all for now," he said, moving toward the door. Then, almost immediately, his phone rang.

He answered, voice calm, professional, but his brow furrowed slightly as he listened.

"Yes… I see… one company is surpassing us already?" His tone sharpened. "No, that cannot happen. We need to be number one, nothing less. I'm coming back immediately."

Nuha watched him, curiosity and a little anxiety mixing in her chest. "Sir… is everything alright?" she asked softly.

Rayyan's eyes softened ever so briefly as they flicked toward her. "It's… business," he said, clipped. "Urgent matters. You… will have the day off tomorrow. Rest, Miss Nuha. That's all I expect from you."

She nodded, her cheeks warming at the subtle way he kept her in mind even as his attention shifted to urgent business. "Yes… sir."

He ended the call, exhaling softly, a hint of tension in his shoulders. Then he straightened fully, slipping back into his professional mode. "I'll be leaving shortly to handle this personally. Ensure your desk is secure before leaving."

Nuha moved quickly, trying to maintain composure, her mind buzzing. "Of course, sir."

Rayyan glanced at her one last time before leaving the office, a subtle intensity in his gaze that made her pulse quicken. She watched him walk away, the door clicking softly behind him, and she let out a quiet breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding.

He… he cares. Even when he has a million things to deal with, he's thinking about me resting… she thought, a small smile tugging at her lips.

Once the office was silent again, Nuha packed her bag fully, making sure nothing was left behind. She couldn't help but replay the moment in her head:

The way he calmly told her she could rest tomorrow.

The subtle softening of his eyes when he mentioned it.

His professional mask never breaking fully, yet the personal touch was there.

He's always professional… but sometimes he lets himself slip, just a little, she thought. Her hand absentmindedly brushed her scarf, remembering how he had adjusted it earlier.

Her chest warmed at the memory. I can't believe I'm thinking about that. He's my boss… but… it feels like more.

Nuha paused by her office door, glanced once more down the hallway where Rayyan had disappeared, and whispered to herself, almost shyly, "Tomorrow… I'll finally rest… but I wonder if he'll even notice I'm gone."

Her lips curved into a soft, private smile. Knowing him… he probably will.

With that thought, she finally slung her bag over her shoulder and stepped out of the office, the quiet buzz of the building around her, her heart still fluttering with a mix of excitement and anticipation for the unexpected day off.
