Every corner buzzed with voices, aunties laughing too loudly, uncles debating politics, cousins reconnecting after years apart. The air smelled of rich food and expensive perfume, and the soft hum of traditional music floated through the open halls.
Nuha stood near the center of it all, composed but inwardly exhausted cause of the attention she was getting.
"Nuha, have you met Idris yet?"
"Nuha, come greet my friend's son."
"Nuha, just sit here for a minute."
One after the other.
She smiled politely, nodded respectfully, answered the same questions again and again.
*What do you do?*
*Where do you work now?*
*Are you seeing anyone?*
By the third man, her smile had started to ache.
Across the courtyard, Danish noticed.
He had been mid-conversation with Samira, laughing over something she had just said, when his eyes drifted instinctively toward Nuha. He frowned.
She was surrounded.
Again.
He watched one of their aunties lean in far too eagerly, gesturing animatedly at a young man standing beside Nuha. Nuha laughed softly, but Danish could tell it was her polite laugh, not the real one.
Samira followed his gaze.
"That's your cousin?" she asked casually.
Danish nodded. "Nuha."
She tilted her head. "She's… very popular."
He exhaled. "Unfortunately."
Samira smiled faintly. "You look like you're about to intervene."
He hesitated for only a second.
"Excuse me," he said, already standing. "I'll be right back."
Samira watched him go, curiosity flickering in her eyes.
'Interesting', she thought.
Danish walked straight into the cluster of aunties, his posture calm but purposeful.
"Aunty Zainab," he said warmly. "Grandma is asking for you."
The woman blinked. "Now?"
"Yes," Danish said smoothly. "She needs your help with something."
The aunty sighed, clearly torn, then smiled at Nuha. "We'll talk later."
One by one, the circle broke apart.
Nuha turned to Danish, relief washing over her face.
"You're a lifesaver," she said under her breath.
He smiled. "I figured you needed extraction."
"You figured correctly."
He glanced around. "Want to breathe?"
She nodded immediately.
They walked a few steps away, near the edge of the courtyard where it was quieter.
"You okay?" he asked.
She laughed softly. "They're treating me like an exhibition."
He chuckled. "Welcome to family anniversaries."
From afar, Samira watched them...the ease between them, the familiarity. She noticed the way Danish angled his body protectively toward Nuha, how Nuha leaned in slightly as she spoke.
Her smile faded just a little.
'So that's her', she thought.
Just then, the sound of excited voices rose near the entrance.
"Nawal is here!"
Nuha turned just in time to see Nawal walking in.....radiant as always, dressed in a soft peach outfit, confidence glowing from her. Beside her was Kaysan, relaxed and attentive, and just behind them, Shan.
Nawal waved the moment she spotted Nuha.
"NUHA!"
Nuha's face lit up.
Nawal made her rounds first, greeting elders, hugging aunties, exchanging playful remarks. She was effortless that way, warm, familiar, impossible to ignore.
Shan, meanwhile, scanned the crowd until his eyes landed on Nuha.
He walked over once she was momentarily alone.
"Salam alaykum," he said, his voice low but warm.
"Walaykum salam," Nuha replied, smiling.
He took a step back, looking her over openly... not rudely, just honestly.
"You look… incredible," he said. "I almost didn't recognize you."
She laughed. "Is that a compliment or an insult?"
"A very dangerous compliment," he teased. "You've upgraded."
She shook her head, laughing. "You're impossible."
They talked easily... about the crowd, the food, how long it had been since they'd all been together like this. Shan's humor was effortless, drawing genuine laughter from Nuha.
Across the courtyard, Danish's father noticed.
He narrowed his eyes slightly, recognition sparking.
"That's Shan," he muttered. "The one from the business meeting."
Without hesitation, he walked over.
"Shan," he said firmly. "We need to talk."
Shan blinked. "Sir?"
"Now."
Nuha stared as Shan was practically dragged away.
She frowned. "I thought he came with Kaysan."
Before she could think more about it, Nawal appeared at her side, sighing dramatically.
"Don't even ask," Nawal said. "They've been doing the same thing to me."
Nuha laughed. "You too?"
"Oh please," Nawal scoffed. "One aunty asked me if I'm 'still serious' with Kaysan like he's a phase."
Nuha burst out laughing.
"And?"
"I told her if he's a phase, then I hope it lasts forever."
They both laughed again.
"Come," Nawal said, linking arms with her. "Let's escape before they assign us husbands."
"Lead the way."
They slipped out of the villa and into the garden beyond, where the noise faded into distant echoes.
Nuha exhaled deeply. "Thank you."
"For what?"
"For existing."
Nawal smiled at her. "Anytime."
Back inside, Samira approached Danish again.
"She's beautiful," Samira said carefully.
He nodded. "She is."
"And important to you."
"Yes," he said honestly. "Very."
Samira smiled, accepting something silently.
"Well," she said lightly, "I suppose that answers my earlier question."
He met her eyes. "She's not the one I told you about."
Samira raised an eyebrow. "Really?"
"Yes."
She studied him for a moment, then smiled. "Good. Because the way you look at *that* girl… it's different."
Danish said nothing.
Outside, Nuha and Nawal sat on a low stone bench, watching lights flicker inside the villa.
"You know," Nawal said quietly, "no matter how many men they bring, none of them compare."
Nuha smiled faintly. "To who?"
Nawal smirked. "Exactly."
They laughed softly, the night settling around them.
Inside the villa, hearts misunderstood, feelings stirred and nothing yet said aloud.
Rayyan arrived at the villa later than planned.
The moment he stepped out of the car, he knew this wasn't just any gathering. The place was alive, lights glowing warmly, guests spilling into the courtyard, laughter floating in the air. It was elegant, intimate, powerful. The kind of celebration only old-money families hosted.
'The Amani anniversary,' he recalled.
He adjusted his cufflinks absently as he walked in, scanning faces out of habit more than interest.
And then...
He saw her.
Nuha stood near the courtyard, bathed in soft golden light, her emerald dress flowing as she laughed gently at something someone said. For a split second, Rayyan forgot how to breathe.
'What is she doing here?'
His brows furrowed. He took a step forward, then stopped when he saw her turn and walk straight toward Danish.
Rayyan's jaw tightened.
'So that's it.'
He watched them greet each other ... familiar, easy, close. Nuha smiled in a way Rayyan had only seen in quiet moments at work, when she forgot herself. Danish leaned in slightly, protective, comfortable.
Rayyan didn't know Nuha was part of the Amani family.
He only knew one thing:
Danish Amani had everything.
The name.
The wealth.
The influence.
The family legacy.
Everything Rayyan had fought for and more.
Something bitter twisted in his chest.
'So she came with him,' he concluded coldly. 'Of course'
Before he could move closer, a familiar voice chimed beside him.
"Well, well," Laiyana said smoothly. "I was wondering when you'd arrive."
Rayyan barely glanced at her. "What do you want?"
She smiled, eyes glinting. "Relax. I just came to deliver something."
She turned .... and that's when she spotted Nuha again.
"Oh," Laiyana said softly. "There she is."
Rayyan stiffened.
Laiyana excused herself and walked straight toward Nuha.
Nuha had just stepped back inside when someone blocked her path.
"Miss Nuha," Laiyana said brightly.
Nuha turned, startled. "Salam alaykum."
"Walaykum salam," Laiyana replied, smiling too sweetly. "I recognize you from the office."
Nuha nodded politely. "Yes."
"I was asked to give you this."
She handed over a neatly folded letter. "On behalf of Rayyan."
Nuha frowned. "He's here?"
Laiyana tilted her head. "Didn't you know?"
Her smile lingered a second too long before she walked away.
Nuha unfolded the letter slowly.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Once.
Twice.
Her fingers trembled.
'Effective immediately, you are to proceed with the assignment discussed. This decision has been finalized at the executive level. Your cooperation is expected.'
Her chest tightened.
Her throat burned.
'Sent away.'
Just like that.
Without warning.
Without a word.
Without even facing her.
She folded the letter carefully, her expression unnervingly calm...the kind of calm that comes right before something breaks.
She turned.
Her eyes found Rayyan instantly.
He was standing near the edge of the courtyard, watching her... his face unreadable, guarded, distant.
Nuha walked straight toward him.
"Rayyan," she said quietly.
He stiffened at her tone.
"Nuha....."
"Is this true?" She held up the letter. "Did you really send this through someone else?"
He glanced at the paper, then back at her face.
"Yes," he said carefully. "It's… complicated."
Her lips parted. "Complicated?"
"I tried to make it sound easier," he said gently. "It's an opportunity....."
"An opportunity?" Her voice cracked despite her effort. "You promised me stability. You promised....."
"I didn't have a choice," he cut in softly. "This was decided above me."
She stared at him.
"You could have told me," she whispered. "You could have looked me in the eye."
Rayyan swallowed. "I didn't want to ruin your night."
A hollow laugh escaped her. "You ruined much more than that."
Silence stretched between them.
"I thought," she said slowly, "that at least you would protect me."
His jaw tightened. "I am protecting you."
"No," she shook her head. "You're sending me away."
Her eyes glistened, but she refused to let the tears fall there.
Without another word, she turned and walked away.
Rayyan reached out instinctively ... then stopped himself.
He watched her disappear into the villa.
