Chapter 34 - Jade Lotus Inn, Beneath Mortal Guise

The Jade Lotus Inn was livelier than usual.

Lanterns swayed gently under the afternoon breeze, their reflections trembling in polished wooden floors. The scent of tea leaves, simmering broth, and freshly baked pastries filled the air.

Yue Ning stepped inside calmly, dressed in simple pale robes, her hair tied loosely with a jade pin.

Beside her were her five friends.

Lian Hua clapped her hands.

"I swear, every time I come here, it feels different."

Zhao Rong nodded approvingly.

"The arrangement changes slightly. Whoever owns this place understands balance."

Fang Mei leaned closer to Yue Ning.

"Ning Ning, this inn is too refined for a mere restaurant."

Fang Jian laughed.

"You always say that."

Li Wen glanced around, lowering his voice.

"The private rooms upstairs are always full. Even nobles come quietly."

Yue Ning smiled softly.

"Good food draws all kinds of people."

She chose a table by the window.

"Sit," she said. "Order whatever you like."

Lian Hua grinned.

"You're paying again?"

Yue Ning raised an eyebrow.

"Do you want me to change my mind?"

They laughed and settled in.

At that moment, the door opened.

A young man entered, dressed plainly in dark robes, no insignia, no guards in sight. His steps were light, measured.

Yet the moment he crossed the threshold—

Yue Ning's fingers paused on her teacup.

Her gaze lifted slightly.

Not startled. Not alarmed.

Aware.

Her heartbeat remained steady, but something deep within her stirred, ancient and restrained.

So you are here.

Xu Chen scanned the inn briefly, then chose a quiet table near the stairs.

He appeared calm.

But the moment he sat—

His eyes flickered, almost imperceptibly, toward Yue Ning's direction.

Strange, he thought.

Nothing visible. No aura. No pressure.

Yet the space felt… aligned.

Zhao Rong followed Yue Ning's gaze.

"Do you know him?"

Yue Ning shook her head lightly.

"No."

Fang Mei tilted her head.

"Then why are you staring?"

Yue Ning lifted her teacup.

"I am not."

Fang Jian laughed.

"You definitely are."

Lian Hua leaned closer, whispering,

"He's handsome, but looks… ordinary."

Li Wen frowned slightly.

"Ordinary people do not carry themselves like that."

Yue Ning lowered her lashes.

He suppresses himself well.

She did not look again.

Instead, she raised her hand slightly.

Within seconds, a middle-aged man approached respectfully.

"Miss," he said softly.

This was Shen Qiu, the chief shopkeeper of Jade Lotus Inn.

"Prepare the spring set," Yue Ning murmured.

"And invite the guest by the stairs."

Shen Qiu froze for the briefest moment.

"Yes."

"Welcome, honored guest," the shopkeeper said cheerfully. "Please, sit wherever you like."

Xu Chen nodded.

"Thank you."

He chose a table near the window.

Upstairs, behind a carved wooden screen, Yue Ning paused mid-page.

Her fingers rested lightly on the book.

You hide well, she thought calmly.

She did not look directly.

She did not release awareness outward.

Instead, she spoke softly, as if discussing nothing important.

"Shopkeeper Shen."

Shen Qiu appeared immediately.

"Yes, Miss?"

"Serve the guest below a cup of spring tea,"

Yue Ning said. "The lighter blend."

Shen Qiu nodded without hesitation.

"Of course. Would you like me to recommend it as today's special?"

"No," Yue Ning replied. "Just serve it."

"As you wish."

He left, thinking nothing of it.

Downstairs, Shen Qiu placed a teacup before Xu Chen.

"This is a complimentary tea," he said with a friendly smile.

"Our inn prepares it fresh each morning."

Xu Chen glanced at the clear liquid.

"You are generous."

Shen Qiu laughed.

"Good tea brings returning guests."

Xu Chen lifted the cup and drank.

It was mild. Pleasant. Ordinary.

Yet his breathing slowed slightly, his thoughts settling into rare clarity.

This tea is… calming, he noted. Well brewed.

He did not think further.

Upstairs, Yue Ning observed quietly.

The Dao resonates, she confirmed inwardly. Only one who embodies balance would respond this way.

She turned the page of her book.

A moment later, Shen Qiu returned with a small dish.

"Steamed vegetables," he said. "Light and easy on the stomach."

Xu Chen smiled.

"You seem to know travelers well."

Shen Qiu scratched his head.

"I have been running inns for many years. People reveal their habits quickly."

Xu Chen tasted the food.

Nothing unusual.

Yet for a brief instant, the room felt… aligned.

So brief that he dismissed it as imagination.

I must be more tired than I thought.

Above the mortal world, a faint tremor passed through unseen laws.

"…Strange," a distant will murmured.

Then silence returned.

Xu Chen stood to leave.

"How much do I owe?" he asked.

Shen Qiu waved his hand.

"The tea was complimentary. Just the meal."

Xu Chen paid and inclined his head slightly.

"Your inn is well run."

Shen Qiu beamed.

"Please visit again."

Xu Chen stepped outside, merging into the crowd.

He never once looked upstairs.

Shen Qiu returned to Yue Ning.

"The guest has left," he said. "Quite a polite young man."

Yue Ning closed her book.

"Did he say anything unusual?"

"No," Shen Qiu replied honestly.

"Just an ordinary traveler. Good manners, calm temperament."

Yue Ning nodded.

"That is all."

Shen Qiu bowed and left, completely unaware that the guest he had just served was the origin of all laws.

Alone, Yue Ning murmured softly, almost amused,

"He did not notice."

She rose and walked away.

Far away, Xu Chen paused briefly on the street, frowning for a heartbeat.

"…Why does that inn feel so memorable?"

He shook his head and continued on.

Above heaven and earth, destiny tightened its threads—quietly, patiently, unseen.
