Chapter 29: The Man Who Claimed the Light (True Continuity)
The storm quieted.
Victoria stood at one end of the street.
Max stood at the other.
Fifty steps apart.
Rain falling softly between them like a silver curtain.
They did not move.
They did not speak.
They only stared.
The air trembled faintly from what almost happened.
Then—
The space beside Victoria distorted.
Not loudly.
Not violently.
Precisely.
A man stepped out of thin air and onto the pavement next to her.
Victoria gasped and staggered back.
Max's entire body went rigid.
He couldn't reach her in time.
The man did not acknowledge Max yet.
His pale blue eyes studied Victoria carefully.
Interest.
Calculation.
"You are the source," he said calmly.
Victoria's heart pounded. "Who are you?"
Max stepped forward instinctively—
The pressure in the air increased instantly.
The man lifted one finger.
Max felt resistance slam into his body.
Not an attack.
A warning.
"You," the stranger said without looking at him, "are currently unstable."
Now his gaze shifted.
Cold. Assessing.
"Weakened."
Max's jaw tightened.
The man turned back to Victoria.
"Your core is resonating beyond natural limits. Untrained. Unprotected."
Victoria felt the golden threads beneath her skin flicker nervously.
"I don't belong to anyone," she said.
A faint smile touched the man's lips.
"You will."
Max forced another step forward despite the invisible weight pressing against him.
The pavement cracked beneath his foot.
The man finally looked at him fully.
Recognition flickered in his eyes.
"A sealed storm," he murmured. "At less than half capacity."
Max didn't answer.
His aura trembled — unstable from the earlier storm restraint.
If he forced it open now—
The city would suffer.
The man extended his hand toward Victoria.
"Come with me. I will adopt you into my House."
Victoria froze.
Max felt something inside him snap.
He couldn't let this happen.
But he was too far.
Too weakened.
And the distance between them had never felt wider.
