Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Third-Year

Rumors travel faster than punches.

By Friday morning, Kaito could feel it.

Eyes lingered longer.

Whispers stopped when he walked by.

Even teachers seemed slightly more alert around certain groups.

He didn't understand why.

Until lunch.

The Cafeteria

The atmosphere felt… wrong.

Quieter.

Heavier.

Ryo wasn't loud today.

Neither were his friends.

They were sitting straighter.

Watching the entrance.

"Why does it feel like there's a final boss walking in?" Kaito muttered under his breath.

Miki kicked his leg under the table. "Don't say things like that."

Then the room shifted.

Not dramatically.

Just subtly.

Conversations softened.

Chairs scraped.

A small pathway opened near the entrance without anyone being told to move.

A tall student stepped inside.

Third-year uniform.

Blazer worn properly.

Tie straight.

Expression calm.

Not flashy.

Not loud.

But controlled.

Behind him were three other third-years — broad-shouldered, relaxed, observant.

"Who is that?" Kaito whispered.

Miki's voice dropped. "You don't know?"

Kaito shook his head.

"That's Ren Takahashi. Third-year."

The name meant nothing to Kaito.

But the silence around them did.

"He doesn't bully," Miki continued quietly. "He doesn't start fights. But… when something happens in this school, it goes through him."

Kaito frowned. "Like what?"

"Like who gets protected. Who gets warned. Who gets ignored."

Ren walked through the cafeteria like he had all the time in the world.

He wasn't scanning aggressively.

He wasn't looking for trouble.

He was simply aware.

And somehow—

That felt heavier than aggression.

The Moment

Ren stopped near Ryo's table.

No one spoke.

Ryo stood up.

Not submissive.

Not weak.

But respectful.

"Senpai."

So that's how it is, Kaito thought.

Hierarchy.

Ren's eyes moved once across the cafeteria.

They passed over groups.

Athletes.

Nerd tables.

First-years.

Then—

They stopped on Kaito.

It lasted maybe one second.

Maybe less.

But it felt like being measured.

Not judged.

Measured.

Kaito's heartbeat spiked.

Don't look away.

He didn't know why that instinct rose in him, but he followed it.

He held eye contact.

Just briefly..

Ren's expression didn't change.

But something unreadable flickered there.

Then he looked away.

Conversation slowly resumed in the cafeteria.

Air returned to the room.

Kaito exhaled without realizing he'd been holding his breath.

After School

Ryo caught up to him near the lockers.

"You really don't know who that was, huh?"

Kaito shook his head. "Should I?"

Ryo studied him carefully.

"That's the guy who keeps this place from turning into a warzone."

"…Warzone?"

Ryo scoffed. "You think we're the top? We're just noise. Third-years decide how far things go."

Kaito processed that slowly.

"So what happens if someone challenges him?"

Ryo gave a short laugh.

"They don't."

There was no arrogance in that answer.

Just certainty.

Evening – James' Reaction

When Kaito told James about Ren Takahashi, something changed.

Not fear.

Not concern.

Just focus..

"…Ren Takahashi," James repeated.

"You know him?"

"I've heard of him."

Kaito sat up straighter. "Is he that strong?"

James didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he asked:

"When he looked at you… what did you feel?"

Kaito thought about it.

"…Like he already knew how strong I was."

James nodded once.

"That's dangerous."

"Because he's strong?"

"No," James said calmly.

"Because he understands people."

Silence settled between them.

Kaito stared at the floor.

He wasn't the weakest anymore.

But he wasn't anywhere near the top.

There were levels.

Layers.

Structures he hadn't seen before.

And somewhere above him—

A third-year who didn't need to raise his voice to control a room.

Night Thoughts

Lying on the couch, Kaito replayed that brief eye contact.

Measured.

Not threatened.

Not impressed.

Just aware.

For the first time since he started training, a new thought crept in:

I'm still small.

Not weak.

But small.

And strangely…

That didn't discourage him.

It sharpened him.

Because now he knew—

There was a mountain.

And at the top of it stood someone who didn't need to prove anything.

Ren Takahashi.

Third-year.

Leader.

And for the first time—

Kaito understood what real presence looked like.
