The dungeon entrance looked like a crack in a hillside. Easy to miss if you didn't know where to look.
Aren stood in front of it with Torrhen, staring at the dark opening that seemed to swallow light.
"This is it?" Aren asked.
"Yep. The Moss Cavern. F-rank dungeon. Weakest one in the region." Torrhen adjusted his bow and checked his quiver. "Monsters inside are Level 3 to 8. Mostly slimes, cave rats, and the occasional moss golem."
"Sounds easy."
"For me at Level 12, yeah. For you at Level 3…" Torrhen gave him a serious look. "Stay close. Don't run ahead. And if I say run, you run. Got it?"
"Got it."
Zephyra perched on Aren's shoulder, invisible to Torrhen but very much present. "I don't like this. Dungeons are dead zones for spirits. The System's influence is strongest inside."
"Will you still be able to help me?" Aren asked quietly.
"Yes, but it'll be harder. The bond will feel strained. And I won't be able to sense other spirits inside. Dungeons are… empty."
Breeze and Spark floated nearby, looking nervous.
"We're not going in there," Spark said. "Dungeons feel wrong. Like being trapped."
"That's fine," Aren said. "You two stay out here. Guard the entrance."
"We can do that!" Breeze said, sounding relieved.
Torrhen pulled out two crystals from his pack—glowing stones that gave off pale blue light. He handed one to Aren.
"Light crystal. Standard dungeon gear. Don't lose it."
[ITEM RECEIVED: LIGHT CRYSTAL]
Effect: Provides illumination in dark areas. Does not expire.
Aren clipped it to his belt. The crystal's glow pushed back the shadows a bit.
"Ready?" Torrhen asked.
"Ready."
They stepped into the dungeon.
…
The temperature dropped immediately. The cave walls were slick with moisture and covered in patches of glowing moss that gave off a faint green light. The air smelled like rot and earth.
[DUNGEON ENTERED: THE MOSS CAVERN]
Rank: F
Recommended Level: 3-8
Party Size: 1-4
Monsters: Slimes, Cave Rats, Moss Golems
Boss: Ancient Moss Golem (Level 10)
A notification appeared in Aren's vision. Standard dungeon entry stuff, apparently.
The tunnel sloped downward. Water dripped somewhere in the distance. Aren could hear something moving deeper in—scratching sounds, wet squelching.
"Stay alert," Torrhen whispered. "First monsters usually show up about fifty feet in."
They crept forward. Aren kept his hand ready, prepared to use Gust if needed.
Zephyra was right—the bond felt weird in here. Strained, like trying to shout through a thick wall. He could still feel her presence, but it was muted.
The tunnel opened into a larger chamber. And there, sitting in the middle—
[GREEN SLIME - LEVEL 3]
HP: 80/80
It looked like a blob of jello with a core inside. About the size of a large dog. It jiggled and moved slowly across the cave floor, leaving a trail of slime behind it.
"Perfect," Torrhen said. "This is your fight. Slimes are easy. No brain, slow, weak damage. Just hit the core in the center."
Aren stepped forward. The slime noticed him and started oozing in his direction. Slowly. Very slowly.
"Gust!" Aren threw out his hand.
Wind blasted the slime, but it just wobbled and kept coming.
"Physical attacks don't work well on slimes," Torrhen called. "You need piercing damage or magic. Try something sharper."
Aren didn't have sharp wind attacks yet. But he had an idea.
He used Gust again, but this time focused it into a thin stream instead of a wide blast. A concentrated jet of air that punched into the slime's body.
The wind hit the core directly.
CRITICAL HIT!
The core cracked. The slime shuddered and collapsed into a puddle of goo.
[GREEN SLIME DEFEATED]
+50 XP
[ITEM DROP: SLIME GEL x2]
"Nice!" Torrhen said. "Focused wind. That's smart."
Aren grinned. That had actually worked pretty well.
They moved deeper into the dungeon. Over the next hour, they fought six more slimes and a pack of cave rats.
The rats were faster and more annoying. They bit at Aren's ankles and dodged his wind blasts. But Torrhen's arrows picked them off easily.
[CAVE RAT - LEVEL 4] x5 DEFEATED
+125 XP
By the time they reached the second chamber, Aren was getting the hang of dungeon fighting. It was different from the corrupted wolf. These monsters were System-created. No corruption to cleanse. No souls to save. Just enemies that existed to be killed.
It felt… weird. But necessary.
"Break time," Torrhen said, sitting on a rock. He pulled out a water skin and took a drink. "How's your MP?"
Aren checked. [MP: 98/168]
"About sixty percent."
"Good. We're halfway to the boss chamber. You doing okay?"
"Yeah. This is actually kind of fun."
Torrhen smiled. "Dungeons are the safest way to level up. Controlled environment, predictable enemies, loot drops. Once you get stronger, you can solo these for easy money."
Aren sat down next to him. "How much money do people make from dungeons?"
"Depends on the rank. F-rank like this? Maybe 50 silver for a full clear if you sell all the drops. E-rank can get you a few gold. D-rank and above, you're talking serious money. I know a guy who cleared a C-rank dungeon and made 500 gold from the boss loot alone."
500 gold. That was more than Aren's family made in a year.
"The System created dungeons as a way to regulate monster populations," Torrhen continued. "Without them, monsters would breed out of control and overrun civilization. So dungeons spawn monsters, adventurers kill them and take the loot, everyone wins."
"Except the monsters."
"They're not real monsters, Aren. They're System constructs. They only exist inside dungeons. No souls, no families, no purpose except to be killed. Don't feel bad for them."
Aren knew Torrhen was right, but it still felt strange. Creating life just to have it destroyed for experience points and loot.
"Come on," Torrhen stood up. "Let's finish this. Boss chamber is just ahead."
…
The boss chamber was obvious. Bigger than the others, with a high ceiling and a pool of stagnant water in the center. Moss covered every surface, thick and spongy.
And in the middle of the room, partially submerged in the water, sat the boss.
[ANCIENT MOSS GOLEM - LEVEL 10] [BOSS]
HP: 1,200/1,200
It was huge. Eight feet tall, made entirely of moss, mud, and stone. Its arms were thick as tree trunks. It had no face, just a vaguely humanoid shape with a glowing green core visible in its chest.
The moment they entered, the golem stood up. Water and mud poured off its body.
"Okay," Torrhen said, nocking an arrow. "Standard strategy. I'll kite it and do damage. You provide support. Use your wind to knock it off balance or slow it down. Don't try to tank it—one hit from that thing will kill you."
"Got it."
The golem roared—a sound like grinding stones—and charged.
Torrhen rolled to the side and fired three arrows in quick succession. They sank into the golem's body but didn't seem to do much damage.
"Core!" Torrhen shouted. "Aim for the core!"
The golem swung its massive arm. Torrhen ducked, but the arm swept overhead and slammed into the cave wall. Rock shattered.
Aren used Gust to blast the golem's legs.
The wind hit, and the golem stumbled slightly but recovered fast.
"Harder!" Zephyra said in his mind. "Put real force behind it!"
Aren focused and used Gust again, this time channeling more MP.
[MP: 98 → 78]
The blast was stronger. The golem's left leg buckled, and it went down on one knee.
"NOW!" Torrhen fired an arrow directly at the exposed core.
CRITICAL HIT!
The core cracked. The golem roared and stood back up, but now it moved slower. Injured.
It turned toward Aren. Focused on him.
"Oh crap."
The golem charged, faster than something that size should move.
"Feather Fall!" Aren jumped backward and activated the skill. Gravity lessened, and he floated back several feet, dodging the golem's punch.
But the golem didn't stop. It raised both arms overhead, preparing to smash down—
Torrhen's arrow punched through its core from behind.
The golem froze. The green light in its core flickered.
"Hit it again!" Torrhen yelled.
Aren didn't have sharp attacks, but he had an idea. He used Gust at point-blank range, focused into the thinnest jet he could manage.
The concentrated wind stream punched through the cracked core like a drill.
The core shattered.
The golem collapsed into a pile of moss and mud.

[LEVEL UP! YOU ARE NOW LEVEL 5!]

Two levels at once!
Aren sat down hard, breathing heavily. His MP was down to 58, and he felt exhausted.
But they'd done it. First dungeon clear.
Torrhen walked over and offered a hand. "Not bad, little brother. Not bad at all."
Aren took his hand and stood. "That was intense."
"F-rank boss is nothing. Wait until you fight a real one."
The golem's body started dissolving, leaving behind loot. Torrhen gathered it up.
[LOOT ACQUIRED]:
- Moss Core (Crafting Material) x1
- Golem Stone (Crafting Material) x3
- Lesser Health Potion x2
- 15 Silver Coins
"Not a bad haul," Torrhen said, dividing it up. "The Moss Core sells for about 5 gold in the city. Golem Stones are common but useful. And free potions are always nice."
He handed Aren the two health potions and half the coins.
"You earned it."
Aren pocketed the items. His first real dungeon loot.
They made their way back through the now-empty cavern. Without monsters, it felt less threatening. Just a wet, mossy cave.
When they emerged into daylight, Aren took a deep breath of fresh air. Breeze and Spark immediately flew over.
"You're alive!" Spark cheered.
"Of course we're alive," Aren said. "It was just an F-rank dungeon."
"Still! Dungeons are scary!"
Zephyra's presence in his mind felt stronger again. The strain was gone.
"How do you feel?" she asked.
"Tired. But good. I got two levels."
"Good. But you need more. Much more. That dungeon was easy. The capital will not be."
Aren pulled up his status to see his progress.
[STATUS UPDATE - AREN VALEWOOD]
Class: Ancient Shaman (Displayed as: Nature Mage)
Level: 5
HP: 160/160
MP: 58/196
STATS:
∙ STR: 8
∙ VIT: 23 (+6)
∙ AGI: 14
∙ INT: 24 (+6)
∙ WIS: 24 (+2)
∙ LCK: 7
∙ SPI: 58
FREE STAT POINTS: 10
Ten free stat points from the two level-ups. He needed to decide how to spend them.
"Put them in INT and WIS," Zephyra advised. "You need more MP and better magic power. Physical stats can wait."
That made sense. Aren allocated the points.
INT: 24 → 29 (+5)
WIS: 24 → 29 (+5)
His MP jumped.
[MP: 58/196 → 58/225]
Much better. More MP meant more abilities, longer fights, better endurance.
"We should do this again tomorrow," Torrhen said as they walked back toward the village. "Dungeon resets every 24 hours. If you clear it daily for the next three weeks, you'll gain a lot of levels."
"Won't it get boring?"
"Maybe. But it's efficient. And efficiency is how you survive."
Aren couldn't argue with that.
…
That night, Aren lay in bed going over his progress.
Level 5 in just over a week. Not amazing by adventurer standards, but decent for someone who'd been Level 1 eight days ago.
At this rate, he might actually hit Level 10 before they left for the capital.
A soft knock on his window.
Aren turned to see Breeze floating outside, looking nervous.
He opened the window. "What's up?"
"Can I talk to you? Alone?"
Aren glanced at Zephyra, who was perched on the bedpost. She gave a small nod and flew out the window to give them privacy.
Breeze flew in and landed on Aren's pillow.
"I've been thinking," the little wind spirit said. "About contracts."
"Yeah?"
"You contracted with Zephyra. She's strong, and you two work well together. And I know I'm weak. Just a baby spirit. But…"
Breeze looked up at him with those translucent eyes.
"I want to get stronger too. And I think… I think I could be useful. If you gave me a chance."
Aren felt his chest tighten. "Breeze, you don't have to—"
"I want to!" The spirit's voice was firm. "I was born alone. No family, no purpose. Just floating around. But since I met you, I've felt like I matter. Like I could be part of something important."
The little spirit flew in a nervous circle.
"So I want to offer you a contract. I know I'm not strong like Zephyra. I can't fight well or do big magic. But I'm loyal. And I'll work hard. And maybe… maybe together we can both become something more."
A notification appeared.

Aren looked at the small spirit floating in front of him. Breeze wasn't powerful. Wouldn't give him amazing abilities. But the spirit was sincere. Genuine. And honestly, Aren liked Breeze.
"You know what?" Aren said. "I'd be honored to have you as my second contract."
Breeze's whole body lit up. "Really?!"
"Really. Let's grow strong together."
Aren reached out his hand. Breeze touched it with one tiny translucent wing.
Light flowed between them—gentler than the contract with Zephyra, but warm and pleasant.
[CONTRACT FORMED]

The light faded. Breeze spun in happy circles.
"We did it! We're really contracted! I have a shaman!"
Aren smiled. The abilities weren't combat-focused, but Scout Wind could be incredibly useful. And the happiness radiating from Breeze through their new bond was infectious.
Zephyra flew back in through the window.
"Congratulations," she said to Breeze. "Welcome to the shaman's circle."
"Thank you!" Breeze did a loop. "I'll work hard! I promise!"
"See that you do. We have a shaman to keep alive."
Spark zoomed in a moment later. "Hey! What'd I miss?! Wait, did Breeze contract?!"
"Yep!" Breeze said proudly.
"No fair! I want to contract too!"
"Your time will come, little flame," Zephyra said. "When you're ready."
Spark grumbled but accepted it.
Aren lay back down, now with three spirits in his room. It was getting crowded.
But it felt right. Like building a family.
Two contracts. Level 5. Two weeks and change until the capital.
He was making progress.
Tomorrow, they'd clear the dungeon again. And the day after. And every day until it was time to leave.
Because when they reached the capital, Aren would need every advantage he could get.
The world was bigger and more dangerous than his little village. And somewhere out there, people were asking questions about the strange A-rank Nature Mage who could purify corruption.
The Priestess's suspicion. The mysterious man in dark clothes. The Classification Bureau waiting to study him.
Aren pulled his blanket up and closed his eyes.
Three weeks to get ready.
The countdown had begun.
