Chapter 4 - Smell the Flowers

It was a tranquil and serene primeval morning across the enchanting land of Jurassica as the golden sun began to rise, casting a warm glow over the ancient sequoia tree that stood majestically in the clearing. This was Parker's hollow tree, and nestled deep within its sturdy embrace, the little dinosaur slept soundly on his nest-shaped bed, wrapped in the warmth of his dreams. Curled up like a small, slumbering bird, Parker the Parksosaurus lay content until the gentle sunbeams filtered through the leaves, nudging him awake. Gradually, the little dinosaur stirred, stretching and yawning expansively before slowly unrolling himself to sit up on his circular, moss-lined bedding.

"What a Jurassic fantastic morning," Parker exclaimed to himself, his eyes sparkling with wonder as they adjusted to the daylight. "I wonder if Amber enjoyed her sleep as well."

Casting his gaze around the cozy confines of his home, Parker quickly noticed that Amber's bed was empty, stirring a mixture of concern and curiosity within him.

"Amber?" Parker called, his voice echoing softly in the warm air as he began his search through the snug space.

"I'm in the kitchen!" came the cheerful reply from the young lady, filled with enthusiasm.

Upon hearing her voice, Parker hopped out of bed, quickly donned his usual brown vest, and made his way into the heart of the home—the kitchen. As he stepped inside, the delightful aroma of fresh fruit tickled his nostrils, and he was met with a delightful sight: Amber had finished preparing a colorful breakfast. Two bowls brimming with a vibrant fruit salad—crafted from a medley of ripened fruits and crunchy nuts native to Jurassica—were beautifully arranged on the stone-carved table.

"Did you make this, Amber?" Parker asked, his eyes widening in surprise as he took in the vibrant colors of the dish before him.

"Of course, Parker," she replied, a warm, bright smile lighting up her face. "It's been three whole weeks since you kindly let me stay with you, and I wanted to express my gratitude in the best way I could."

"I see," Parker replied, reaching for a wooden fork, his curiosity piqued. As he took a bite, the flavors burst in his mouth. "Wow, Amber, you did a terrific job with this!"

"Aw, thank you, Parker," Amber giggled, her cheeks flushing with delight. "It's the least I can do, especially now that I recall that I was considered an excellent cook back where I came from."

"I figured that out from your diary, I'm guessing," the little dinosaur shrugged nonchalantly, savoring another bite of the delicious salad.

"More or less," Amber replied, a glimmer of nostalgia in her eyes as she took a bite of her own feast. "Ever since Dusk discovered the diary, it has helped me remember so many things. For instance, I love fashion, parties, and creating beautiful things."

"I've noticed," the little dinosaur chuckled, a playful glimmer in his eyes as he caught sight of a slight frown forming on Amber's face. "Is something the matter, Amber?"

"I don't know, Parker," she admitted, her voice tinged with uncertainty. "I've been able to remember so much, yet there are still pieces of my life that elude me, like who my family is or where this enchanting place called Sandy Shores lies. It all just feels so confusing."

As Amber gazed down, her expression heavy with introspection, Parker felt a wave of sympathy wash over him. He knew she still had a long journey ahead in rediscovering her memories. Suddenly, a bright idea sparked in his mind.

"You know," Parker began, his voice filled with enthusiasm, "my friends and I are planning a visit to the meadows in the Paleo Plains, and I hear the flowers should be blooming there right now."

"Flowers?!" Amber's face lit up with excitement, her eyes sparkling like the morning dew. "Oh my goodness, I adore flowers! They're so breathtaking and can transform an entire room into a vibrant oasis!"

"Well, if you'd like to join us, Amber," Parker suggested warmly, "you'd be more than welcome to tag along!"

"Oh, thank you, Parker!" Amber exclaimed, wrapping her arms around him in an unexpected embrace, catching the little dinosaur off guard and leaving him blushing with a mix of surprise and delight. "You truly are a wonderful companion."

"Uh… don't mention it, Amber," Parker stammered, feeling slightly awkward yet pleased by her affection.

"Just give me a minute to gather my things, and I'll be ready to join you," Amber said, her voice brimming with newfound enthusiasm as she scampered toward her bedroom to collect her belongings.

As Amber disappeared into her room, Parker remained behind, lost in thought as he pondered the strange yet exhilarating feelings that had been swirling within him ever since she arrived. He decided to set those musings aside for now as he and Amber prepared to meet up with their friends, Flap, Boulder, and Dusk. Soon enough, the cheerful group of Paleo Pals, accompanied by Amber, set off toward the flowering meadow.

As they journeyed along the winding trail, they passed through a lush forest thick with towering conifers and ancient cycads, the air fragrant with the scent of pine and earth. Yet, just as they immersed themselves in the beauty of their surroundings, a tremendous stomping sound reverberated through the trees.

"What… was that?!" Amber gasped, her heart racing as her eyes widened in apprehension.

"It could be my stomach," Boulder chimed in playfully, a sheepish grin on his face. "The thought of flowers is making me a bit hungry!"

"Are you sure about that, Boulder?" Flap questioned, casting a skeptical glance at the larger dinosaur. "Because that noise seemed a tad loud, even for you."

"Well, there's only one way to find out," Parker said, a sense of determination in his voice. "Everyone, stay close together."

As the five friends stood their ground, a collective sigh of relief escaped their lips when they finally laid eyes on the creature responsible for the commotion. It was a towering, long-necked Brachiosaurus—its silhouette majestic against the backdrop of the thinning trees—making its leisurely way toward a nearby conifer tree to feast on its tender leaves. The gentle giant, with its gray-brown skin and creamy underbelly, moved gracefully, the vibrant turquoise tinge on its crest catching the dappled sunlight. In sheer awe, the five friends remained transfixed, marveling at the splendor of nature displayed before them.

"Wow," Amber exclaimed, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in the breathtaking sight of the immense Brachiosaurus. "I never thought I would see a living Brachiosaurus in real life. This moment is something I never want to forget."

"Neither do I," Parker chimed in, his voice filled with awe. "Even though we've coexisted with these magnificent creatures for years, the sight of such a long-necked dinosaur is always nothing short of mesmerizing."

As they stood, captivated by the gentle giant grazing on the treetops, Amber's hand instinctively reached for her pink and blue camera, nestled snugly in her duffel bag alongside her diary. Yet, as she aimed to capture the moment, she realized the colossal dinosaur was far too towering to fit within her frame.

"Oh dear," she sighed, a hint of disappointment in her voice. "It looks like I can't get a good shot of that majestic neck."

"Perhaps I could help with that," Flap suggested, flapping his wings eagerly.

"Thank you, Flap," Amber smiled gratefully at the spirited primitive bird. "But please be careful up there."

With determination, Flap ascended into the branches of a nearby tree and managed to position himself perfectly for a snapshot of the Brachiosaurus. Just then, the massive dinosaur felt an unexpected tickle in its nostrils and began to sneeze, a sound echoing through the lush landscape.

"Maybe this wasn't such a good idea," Flap gulped nervously, his heart racing.

In an instant, the Brachiosaurus unleashed a thunderous sneeze that sent Flap spiraling out of the tree and crashing gently into a nearby cycad, its fronds offering a soft landing.

"Bless you," Boulder called cheerfully to the gigantic creature, his voice carrying through the clearing.

"Thank you," the Brachiosaurus replied, its tone surprisingly gentle, before it continued munching on leaves, undeterred by the commotion.

"Flap, are you okay?!" Amber's voice rang out, tinged with concern as she rushed to check on her feathery friend.

"I will be," Flap assured her with a shaky smile. "Hopefully, I won't have to do that again."

"Indeed," Dusk nodded, eyes wide. "That was quite a close call."

"I guess we'd better move on before more surprises spring up," Parker suggested, glancing around the vivid surroundings. "Come on, everyone, let's keep exploring."

And so, the Paleo Pals along with Amber resumed their adventure. As they wandered through the prehistoric landscape, they encountered a dazzling array of dinosaurs and other creatures. A striking feathered Dromaeosaurus—its sleek body adorned in rich black and gray plumage—darted by, searching diligently for foliage to gather for her nest. Nearby, a hefty alligator lounged lazily under the afternoon sun by a shimmering pond, basking in warmth. A small herd of Ankylosaurus ambled past, their stout bodies clad in dark gray armor, as some slightly smaller females grazed peacefully on the verdant foliage.

Meanwhile, the Paleo Pals noticed Amber pulled out her diary, her pen gliding over the pages as she began to document her remarkable experiences.

"That is quite an extraordinary little book, Amber," Dusk commented, his eyes twinkling with curiosity. "It seems like a wonderful way to capture your adventures and memories."

"Thank you, Dusk," Amber beamed, her eyes sparkling with delight. "Since arriving here, I thought it would be wonderful to add fresh experiences to the memories I've cherished from my past."

"It's always essential to treasure your memories," Parker mused thoughtfully, his gaze drifting to the horizon. "They shape the essence of who we become over time."

"For the most part," Flap interjected, fluttering his wings with excitement. "Once we wrap up our sightseeing here, I believe I've uncovered a path leading to a hidden meadow."

"That sounds Jurassic Fantastic, Flap!" Parker grinned at the charming primitive bird. "After wrapping up our activities here, we should reach the meadow in no time."

"What splendid news!" Amber exclaimed, tucking her journal away with eager anticipation. "Let's set off right away!"

So, the five friends embarked on their adventure and soon discovered the meadow they sought. It unfolded before them like a vast canvas, a breathtaking tapestry of vibrant flowers stretching as far as the eye could see.

"Wow," Amber gasped, her heart soaring at the sight of the stunning blossoms. "I still can't believe how enchanting the flowers are here!"

"Indeed," Dusk replied, his feathers ruffling slightly in the gentle breeze. "It's astonishing to think that during the Mesozoic era, flowers were absent from the Earth."

"Oh my," Amber exclaimed, her eyes widening in amazement. "I never realized flowers were such a recent addition to our world!"

"That's correct," Dusk, the wise feathered dinosaur, explained with a hint of pride. "It wasn't until the Cretaceous period that the first true flowers bloomed, and since then, flowering plants have flourished in ways we are only beginning to understand."

"Wow," Boulder said, his voice filled with wonder. "I don't think I'll ever view flowers the same way again."

"Me either," Amber agreed. "How about we find a cozy spot to relax? We can enjoy a snack while reveling in the beauty of the flowers."

"Sounds perfect to me," Parker replied enthusiastically. "Let's explore and see what treasures we can find!"

Together, the Paleo Pals and Amber ventured through the vibrant meadow, passing a variety of dinosaurs going about their daily lives. They admired a herd of round-crested Corythosaurus (kore-Ith-oh-Saw-rus), whose melodic calls resonated like sweet music across the landscape, thanks to their distinctive head crests. These gentle herbivores boasted golden-yellow bodies adorned with bold black stripes, white underbellies, while the males proudly displayed striking crimson crests that caught the sunlight.

Next, they encountered a charming group of multi-horned Styracosaurus (sty-Rack-o-Saw-rus), effortlessly browsing on the flowering foliage. Their robust bodies were dressed in deep green, with vibrant yellow midsections, and the males flaunted brilliant red frills that made them all the more majestic.

Eventually, the five friends stumbled upon the perfect clearing to unwind and revel in the floral splendor.

Once settled, Amber opened her duffle bag, revealing a delightful batch of oatmeal butterscotch cookies, miraculously preserved for three weeks. As Parker, Flap, Boulder, and Dusk each sampled a cookie, a chorus of delighted exclamations filled the air.

"These are truly Jurassic Fantastic, Amber!" Parker declared, his eyes sparkling with joy.

"Thank you, Parker," Amber replied with a warm smile. "I baked these a while ago, back before I washed ashore on Jurassica. Yet they taste just as fresh today."

"You've outdone yourself," Flap praised, savoring the sweet treat. "I usually feast on insects, but these cookies are a delightful change!"

"Absolutely," Boulder chimed in, munching happily. "And they pair perfectly with the fallen magnolia petals!"

"Oh, Boulder," Amber giggled, watching the frilled dinosaur relish the petals alongside his cookies, a picture of pure joy.

Once they polished off their snack, the four friends continued to admire the kaleidoscope of flowers surrounding them. As they made their way back, they bid a fond farewell to the meadow while the Corythosaurus herd continued their enchanting whooping calls, echoing across the sun-kissed Paleo Plains of Jurassica.
