Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: Danger in Jiangcheng 18+

Luo Tong completely ignored me, turning a deaf ear to my praise. Once again, I repeated my mistake and ended up feeling foolish.

"Come, come, come, try this quickly. I've treasured this bag of Pu'er tea for a long time; I wouldn't bring it out for anyone but honored guests." Director Wang finished brewing the tea and warmly invited us to drink.

"Director Wang, our President Xie has also invested in a project in Longyang City and needs to head there tonight. Do you think we could hurry and sign the contract?" Luo Tong said with a smile.

"A big boss is indeed different, handling myriad affairs daily. In that case, I won't stand on ceremony and delay President Xie's business." Director Wang laughed heartily as he stood up, bringing over the contract that had been prepared long ago. "We've already negotiated the terms of the contract, and the mayor has signed and stamped it. If President Xie has no objections, please sign."

"No objections," I replied directly, taking the contract and hurriedly signing my name in all the required places.

This kind of polite exchange between officials and businesspeople was truly something an ordinary small-time employee like me couldn't handle. The hypocrisy was making me cringe so hard I felt like I was getting an awkwardness cancer. I just wanted to get out of there as fast as possible.

I signed my name on the two copies of the contract and various other documents at the fastest speed possible. Luo Tong and Director Wang organized them, each taking what they needed.

"I had booked a hotel to host President Xie, but since you have major business to attend to, I won't insist on keeping you." Director Wang warmly escorted us out of the government building.

Forcing a smile and suppressing my nausea, I uttered a few lines of polite talk so hypocritical it disgusted even me, then hurriedly got into the car.

"Finally, it's over. This kind of occasion really isn't for me. Looks like I'm definitely not cut out to be an official in this lifetime." Once outside the government gate, I felt a wave of relief and couldn't help muttering a few words.

"So, what do you say, Beauty Luo? It's mealtime. I heard Jiangcheng's dragon fish meat is a must-try. Shall we go get some?" I asked with a smile.

"Still thinking about eating? If you don't want to die, we need to escape quickly." Luo Tong's expression was grave.

Her expression startled me, and my heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean? Don't scare me."

"Didn't you notice? We've been followed since the moment we entered the city." Luo Tong's voice grew even colder.

Her words sent chills down my spine, and I quickly twisted my neck to look around.

"I don't believe it. In this clear, lawful society, they'd dare to act recklessly." I tried to bolster my own courage while unconsciously speeding up.

"President Su snatched this business from Hu Sanyong. That man, relying on being the brother-in-law of Jiangcheng's deputy mayor, has connections in both the underworld and legitimate society here. He dominates everything; there's nothing he wouldn't do." Luo Tong explained.

Luo Tong's words immediately threw me into a panic. "Then what should we do? Should we call the police?"

"Useless. Get back the way we came at the fastest speed possible." After saying this, Luo Tong took out her phone, furrowed her brows, and rapidly started sending messages.

Damn it, I cursed inwardly, immediately focusing all my attention and pushing the car's speed as high as I could.

Unfortunately, it was rush hour, and traffic had surged dramatically. The speed simply couldn't be increased, making me so anxious that my palms were soaked with sweat.

"My mother-in-law is so shrewd. Could she really not have anticipated this? Didn't she have a backup plan?" I asked unwillingly.

"President Su certainly made preparations." Luo Tong said.

Only then did I let out a long sigh of relief. But Luo Tong's next sentence immediately made my eyelids twitch in alarm: "There's been a car accident on the highway. I suspect it was a deliberate incident to block all the people President Su sent. They're all stuck on the highway now."

"Fuck, then what do we do?" In my panic, I blurted out a curse.

Luo Tong, on the other hand, remained very calm. Though her expression was grave, she wasn't flustered at all. She said calmly, "The place where they're blocked isn't far from the city. They're already trying to find a way to get here. Hopefully, we can hold out until they arrive."

I understood then that she didn't have any great ideas either. I took several deep breaths, forcing myself to calm down. Maybe the situation wasn't as bad as I thought. Maybe no one was following us at all, and Luo Tong was mistaken.

I kept comforting myself inwardly but didn't dare let my guard down for a second, driving as fast as I could toward the outskirts of Jiangcheng.

Surprisingly, it went smoothly. We followed the main road all the way out of Jiangcheng.

However, before I could feel relieved, I suddenly realized Luo Tong was right. A black sedan had followed us all the way out of the city. When I sped up, it sped up; when I slowed down, it slowed down, maintaining a distance that was neither too close nor too far. It was clearly tailing us.

I tensed up instantly, my palms immediately drenched in sweat. At that point, I didn't care about speeding anymore and slammed the accelerator to the floor.

This was when the performance of a good car showed. It accelerated incredibly fast—150, 160, 170... In just a few seconds, the speed approached its peak, and the tailing vehicle was gradually left behind.

Suddenly, two black sedans appeared ahead simultaneously, one on the left and one on the right, positioning themselves directly in front of my car and beginning to gradually slow down, getting slower and slower until they forced me to a complete stop.

"Fuck!" I cursed through gritted teeth, slapping the steering wheel hard with both hands.

Just then, I heard Luo Tong take a few deep breaths, then say to me, "Lock the doors and stay in the car. I'll go down and stall them to buy some time. If something unexpected happens, don't worry about me. Just drive straight through."

"How can that be?" I urgently objected, but it was too late. Before I finished speaking, Luo Tong had already gotten out of the car.

At the same time, three young men dressed inappropriately, looking like hoodlums, got out of each of the two sedans blocking my car. These guys had hair dyed in various messy colors, tattoos on their arms, and clearly looked like trouble.

Then, one of the hoodlums respectfully opened the passenger door of the left-side vehicle. A young man in a suit, with features so delicate they were almost unnaturally handsome, stepped out. The several hoodlums immediately stood obediently behind him. He seemed to be the leader of this group.

Luo Tong slowly walked forward and started speaking with the young man. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but I saw the young man's expression shifting unpredictably.

Suddenly, the young man looked furious. He swung his hand and slapped Luo Tong hard across the face. The force of the blow made Luo Tong stumble, retreating several steps to the right until the car blocked her path. She steadied herself by holding onto the car.

Damn it, these bastards, even hitting a woman.

Rage surged within me. Cursing inwardly, I frantically searched the car to see if I could find a suitable weapon.

As a man, encountering this kind of situation and hiding in the car while letting a woman go out and get beaten—I felt my self-respect had suffered a devastating insult. Even if it cost me my life today, I would not disgrace myself like this.

However, this Bentley was a brand-new car, so clean there wasn't even a stray hair inside. I was so desperate I wished I could wrench the steering wheel off to use as a weapon.

Suddenly, I saw my own reflection in the rearview mirror—wearing a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, looking utterly refined. An idea struck me. I grabbed the gold-rimmed glasses, took one lens in each hand, and with a forceful twist, the two glass lenses shattered in my palms.

Sharp, piercing pain shot from my hands. At that moment, I couldn't afford to care about much else. I quickly opened my palms, picked out a few of the sharper, larger glass shards from the bloody mess, hid one piece in each sleeve, and stuffed a few more into my suit pockets.

With a roar, I opened the car door and got out.
