I stared at my mother-in-law in astonishment. In my memory, she had never admitted fault before.
"I underestimated Hu Sanyong and didn't plan carefully enough, which led to this mishap. But sooner or later, I'll make sure to get justice for you and Luotong," my mother-in-law said coldly, her usual demeanor returning.
"Mom, can I ask you something? You're not short on money, so why are you so determined to get involved in the real estate project? Especially one in Jiangcheng. You must have some purpose, right?"
I always felt there was something odd about this situation. Normally, I wouldn't pry into my mother-in-law's affairs, but since I was already dragged into it, it was better to get things clear. Knowing more would at least give me some peace of mind.
Hu Sanyong had left me with a lingering sense of unease. Who knew if another Zhang Sanyong or Li Sanyong might pop up next?
"Xiaofan, you're very sharp to pinpoint the key issue. But I can't go into details about this matter. Perhaps one day you'll find out," my mother-in-law replied.
Judging by her expression, she had no intention of telling me anything further. There was no point in pressing her—if she didn't want to say something, no one could get it out of her.
The scale of my mother-in-law's plans was beyond what a small employee like me could comprehend. But I understood the saying, "When gods fight, mortals suffer," all too well. From now on, I needed to be more cautious. I didn't want to get caught up in any trouble.
After briefly asking about Luotong's situation, I shifted the topic and engaged in some casual, aimless chatter with my mother-in-law.
Half an hour later, my wife returned, her emotions having stabilized. However, after coming in, she sat beside me without saying a word, completely ignoring her mother.
Naturally, my mother-in-law wasn't about to apologize to her either. To avoid further awkwardness, she gave me a few instructions and left.
"Nannan, how could you say those things to Mom? Find an opportunity to apologize to her. Don't let such a small matter damage your relationship," I said to my wife.
My wife remained seated without responding, but I could tell from her expression that she wouldn't go until she had thought things through.
I shook my head helplessly. Although my wife wasn't as domineering as her mother, her inherent pride and stubbornness were exactly the same. At their core, mother and daughter were cut from the same cloth.
I closed my eyes to rest, saying nothing more, and gradually drifted off to sleep.
It wasn't until noon that voices in the hospital room woke me. Groggily, I opened my eyes to see Wang Di sitting in the room, chatting with my wife.
"Manager Wang, what brings you here?" I asked in surprise.
"Isn't it only right for me to visit an employee of mine who's been injured?" Wang Di replied with a smile.
To be honest, I wasn't particularly surprised by Wang Di's visit. Ever since I saw that photo, this woman had been excessively attentive toward me.
Wang Di sat by my bedside, asking after my well-being from head to toe. I responded awkwardly.
"Honey, Manager Wang just agreed to look after you temporarily. I'm going home to cook for you," my wife said to me.
"Why go to all that trouble? Just grab something from downstairs. Besides, Manager Wang has to go back to work soon. Let's not inconvenience her," I said.
"No, honey. You're weak right now and need nourishment. Food from outside isn't nutritious. I'll go home and stew a chicken—it won't take long," my wife insisted.
"Alright, let your wife go. I'll just be idling in the office at noon anyway, so I might as well chat with you here. There are still two hours—plenty of time," Wang Di said with a smile.
"Then I'll trouble you, Manager Wang," my wife thanked her and left.
Watching my wife walk away, I sighed inwardly: Oh, my silly wife, are you just naive or too carefree? You've so casually left your husband alone with another woman.
Wang Di's gaze as she watched my wife leave was somewhat strange. It took her a long moment before she turned back and asked, "Have you two really made up?"
I understood the implication in her words and could only respond with an awkward smile.
"I just don't get it—what are you even after?" Wang Di said in a tone full of helplessness.
"Everyone lives their life differently," I replied.
"I really envy someone as easygoing as you. If I had been able to let things go like you back then, I wouldn't have ended up so heartbroken that I suffered from neurasthenia," Wang Di sighed.
Wang Di and I chatted idly as she shared some of her life insights.
Truth be told, I genuinely enjoyed talking with her.
She had been deceived by a man once and fell into such depression that it led to neurasthenia. It showed how seriously she took relationships. In every way, she was a rare, good woman. And precisely because of that, I didn't dare get involved with her. A woman like her probably wouldn't accept anything purely physical without emotional attachment.
After about forty minutes of chatting, I gradually began to feel the urge to urinate, and it grew increasingly urgent.
But with my wife not around, I felt too embarrassed to mention it to Wang Di and had no choice but to endure it.
My wife, however, was taking her time returning, and I was nearing my limit.
From last night until now, I had received seven or eight IV drips, and all that fluid stored in my body desperately needed to be expelled.
"Manager Wang, could you please help me to the restroom?" I couldn't hold it in any longer and had to ask Wang Di for help.
Without overthinking it, Wang Di carefully helped me up, slipped on my slippers, and supported me as we made our way to the bathroom.
After steadying me in front of the toilet, Wang Di prepared to turn and leave.
"Um, could you wait a moment?" I hurriedly spoke up.
Wang Di looked at me, puzzled. I awkwardly raised my two hands, which were bandaged up like zongzi—this was exactly why I had been reluctant to speak up earlier despite the urgency.
Wang Di immediately understood my predicament, and her face flushed bright red. She whispered, "How can I help with that? Maybe... maybe you should hold it in a little longer until your wife comes back."
"I really can't hold it anymore," I said, my face also turning red.
"Then... then... what should we do?" Wang Di was completely flustered, her words stumbling.
"Two options: first, I wet my pants; second, you help me out." I was at my wit's end—I couldn't think of a third solution.
Wang Di's face was crimson as she hesitated, and I was on the verge of breaking down. I had to urge her, "If you don't help soon, I'll be forced to go with the first option."
"Then... then... alright," Wang Di said in a barely audible voice. She stood behind me, took a couple of deep breaths, and then slowly, with trembling hands, reached from my waist down to the elastic band of my hospital pants.
Since he couldn't see, Wang Di fumbled for a long time before managing to loosen the elastic waistband. Then, he grabbed the waist of the hospital pants and pulled them down to his thighs.
"Is this okay?" Wang Di asked softly.
"You haven't taken off the underwear," I replied helplessly.
Wang Di fell silent, his hands flustered as they moved to my waist. He grabbed the waistband of the underwear from both sides and slowly pulled it down.
"Is this okay?" Wang Di asked again in a low voice.
