My wife's behavior left a bitter ache in my heart, but with Liu Wei and his wife present, I couldn't say anything. I could only try my best to keep smiling.
"Sis said she wanted to invite us over for a meal. Your sister-in-law and I skipped lunch just to save our appetites for her cooking. I won't stand on ceremony," Liu Wei declared, grabbing his chopsticks and digging in. After just a few bites, he was eating ravenously, lavishing praise on my wife's culinary skills.
His words made my heart twist painfully. So, it turned out my wife had invited them over on her own initiative. The jealousy inside me grew even stronger.
"Look at you, acting like I've been starving you, as if it's been ages since you last ate," Tian Xiaomo chided Liu Wei disdainfully before picking up her own chopsticks to eat.
After a few bites, she too began to praise, "This is absolutely delicious! Sis, your cooking is truly amazing. No wonder Old Liu is eating like that. You'll have to teach me sometime."
My wife, feeling a bit embarrassed by the compliments, replied, "It's not as great as you say, Sis. Your cooking is the one that's really delicious."
Listening to their mutual flattery, I couldn't help but interject impatiently, "Have you all forgotten there's an injured person here?"
Tian Xiaomo burst out laughing. "Don't worry, we could never forget you," she said, feeding me a few bites of food.
"Come on, it's our first time at your place. We can't just eat without a toast," Liu Wei exclaimed, raising his glass.
"Brother Liu, Sis, let the three of us drink. My husband is injured and can't have alcohol," my wife said, lifting her glass as well.
"Alright then, we'll treat him like air tonight. The three of us will have fun, and he can go cool off somewhere," Liu Wei laughed heartily, downing his drink in one go.
My wife and Tian Xiaomo also took big sips before setting their glasses down.
And just like that, I was truly treated as if I were invisible. The three of them drank, ate, laughed, and chatted, with only Tian Xiaomo occasionally feeding me a bite or two.
I was so frustrated I could almost spit blood, but my current disabled state left me with no choice but to watch helplessly.
Gradually, all three of them grew a bit tipsy. Liu Wei started spinning wild tales, talking about everything under the sun.
I had to admit, Liu Wei really knew how to spin a yarn. Aided by the alcohol, he spoke animatedly, sharing amusing anecdotes and funny stories that had both women giggling incessantly.
Liu Wei talked on, and at some point, he had already wrapped his arm around his wife's slender waist, occasionally kneading it a little and patting her pert bottom. His wife seemed completely unaware, showing no reaction at all.
When I saw this, I was so frustrated I nearly spat out a mouthful of blood. Helplessly, I looked at my two hands, wrapped up like zongzi. Liu Wei was already getting handsy with his wife, while I couldn't do anything to Tian Xiaomo sitting beside me.
"Honey." Just as I was feeling extremely frustrated, my wife suddenly called out to me.
I looked at her in confusion. She slowly stood up, her fair cheeks flushed pink, already showing signs of tipsiness.
"Honey, Brother Liu and Sister-in-law have had quite a bit to drink. Why don't they stay over tonight? What do you think?" my wife said to me, a hint of barely concealed nervousness in her eyes.
As soon as she finished speaking, I understood what she meant. All three of them were a little drunk, and it didn't take much imagination to figure out what might happen if they stayed.
"Nannan, didn't you get hurt last week? Are you sure it's okay?" I forced a smile.
"Yeah, I applied some medicine for a couple of days, and it's already healed," my wife replied, her face reddening as she spoke softly.
"Are you concerned about your sister-in-law, or are you just unwilling to let us stay?" Tian Xiaomo covered her mouth and laughed.
At this point, there was no room for me to refuse. I quickly said, "Of course not! It's rare for you to visit. I'd love for you to stay. I'm just worried Nannan might not be able to handle it."
Just then, Liu Wei stood up, wrapped his arm around his wife's waist, and said to me with a smile, "Don't worry, little brother. I'm getting old and not as vigorous as you. Your wife has been working hard taking care of you lately, and since you're not in the best shape, I'll help her relax for you."
My wife blushed deeply, lowering her head and not daring to look at me.
"Fine, help me back to my room. Do whatever you want. Out of sight, out of mind," I said, pretending not to care since the situation was already set.
"Out of sight doesn't necessarily mean out of mind. I can already smell the sourness in the air," Tian Xiaomo giggled as she helped me up.
My wife quickly came over as well, and together with Tian Xiaomo, they supported me on either side, carefully helping me back to the bedroom and laying me down.
"Honey, lie still and don't move. Once you're better, I'll make it up to you double," my wife said, leaning down to kiss me on the cheek before linking arms with Tian Xiaomo and leaving the room.
Tian Xiaomo turned her head and gave me a meaningful glance, giggling as she left the bedroom with my wife and closed the door. Whether intentionally or not, she only pulled it halfway shut, not completely closed.
Liu Wei's house was an old brick-and-concrete structure built over a decade ago, so the soundproofing was excellent. But our home was a commercial property built just a few years ago with a frame structure and hollow brick walls. The soundproofing was terrible to begin with, and with the door left ajar, it was as if there was no soundproofing at all.
Lying in bed, I could hear every single movement outside clearly.
I heard Tian Xiaomo helping my wife clean up the table, and even the clattering sounds from the kitchen were distinct to my ears.
About half an hour later, I heard footsteps in the hallway.
I didn't know what Liu Wei had done, but I heard Tian Xiaomo scolding him, "Look at how impatient you are! We're both covered in the smell of alcohol. Let's take a shower first before anything else."
"Alright, alright, you and your wife go ahead and shower first. I'll go have a smoke to perk myself up, hehe," Liu Wei quickly agreed.
A few minutes later, the sound of running water came from the bathroom. It was unclear whether my wife or Tian Xiaomo had gone in first.
Over ten minutes later, I heard the bathroom door open. Someone came out, and someone else went in. The bathroom door closed again, and the sound of running water resumed.
This time, it lasted unusually long. I was certain that the one who went in later was my wife. She had a habit of showering with extremely hot water every day, and each session lasted a long time, which was why her skin was exceptionally smooth and delicate.
Sure enough, the sound of water this time was incredibly prolonged, only stopping after a very long while. Then, the bathroom door opened, and footsteps could be heard from the bathroom entrance, eventually fading away into the adjacent bedroom.
Just then, I heard the door of the adjacent bedroom open again, followed by a series of footsteps heading toward the living room. Soon after, Tian Xiaomo's voice rang out: "Had enough of your smoke? Your wife and I are done showering. It's your turn now."
"Got it, ladies. Wait just a moment, I'll be right back," Liu Wei replied in a cheeky tone. A series of hurried footsteps followed, and then, with a thud, the bathroom door closed. Almost simultaneously, the sound of running water started again.
I estimated it would take no more than five minutes before the water stopped and the bathroom door opened.
"Here I come, my beauties," Liu Wei called out as he rushed into the adjacent bedroom.
