Chapter 57 - An Unexpected Visit from the Authorities

Early the next morning.

Chen Mo slowly woke from his dreams and, out of habit, picked up the phone by his bedside. A message from Ah Hui was displayed on the screen.

"Sorry, Brother Mo. One of the friends who went camping with us before was discharged from the hospital today, and he insisted on dragging us out to celebrate. So I probably won't be able to come see Pichu and the others today."

Half-asleep, Chen Mo replied with a short message, then glanced at the time.

8:13 a.m.

"…Just ten more minutes…"

Last night, he'd cleaned the entire house—both floors plus the basement—so he'd gone to bed quite late. As a result, even though this was usually his wake-up time, he felt completely drained.

Of course, part of it was also because today he didn't need to go out for a wilderness livestream.

No survival pressure, a warm and soft bed—just as he was about to pull the blanket over himself and enjoy a sweet extra nap, Chen Mo paused slightly. He glanced at Pichu sleeping soundly beside him, smiled, then pulled the blanket up a little to cover most of Pichu's body before finally drifting back to sleep.

He didn't know how much time passed.

Vaguely—

Just as he was dreaming of a world made entirely of delicious ketchup, Pichu's ears twitched. It suddenly heard a series of ding-dong sounds coming from somewhere.

"…Pichu?"

At last, Pichu groggily sat up on the bed.

The ding-dong sound was coming from outside.

Pichu didn't think much of it—or rather, its tiny head was still immersed in the ketchup world and couldn't think that much. It shook Chen Mo, who was lying beside it.

"Pichu pichu~"

No response.

Pichu wobbled slightly. The pink pouches on its cheeks crackled with faint arcs of electricity. Then, as its little paw lightly came down, the current was instantly transmitted.

"!"

Chen Mo's eyes snapped open, his consciousness instantly returning.

Seeing the electricity flickering on Pichu's cheeks, he immediately understood what that sensation had been.

"Pichu… when did you learn that move Pikachu uses to wake up Ash…"

"Pichu?"

Seeing Chen Mo's helpless expression, the now fully awake Pichu tilted its head, as if asking who "Pikachu" and "Ash" were.

The ding-dong rang again.

Chen Mo frowned, looking puzzled.

He had only moved into this new house yesterday, so not many people knew the address. And Ah Hui, who had said he'd come visit, couldn't make it today.

So who would be ringing the doorbell at this hour…?

With curiosity, Chen Mo walked over to the balcony and looked down.

Standing at the villa's gate were five people. One of them was Officer Wang from the Criminal Investigation Division—the same officer Chen Mo had dealt with before, and also Feng Lan's brother-in-law.

"What are they…?"

The five people below noticed Chen Mo on the balcony. One of them—a white-haired elderly man—immediately raised his hand and waved toward him with a smile.

In the living room.

As Chen Mo poured hot water from the kettle, he discreetly observed the five people seated on the sofa.

Aside from Officer Wang, the one with the highest status was clearly the white-haired elderly man sitting in the center. He looked extremely well-cultivated, the kind of person with natural authority.

To his right sat the two youngest of the group, side by side. One wore a white lab coat and looked no older than thirty. The other had a square face and black-rimmed glasses—when he frowned, he somehow looked unintentionally amusing.

Based on his observations when they entered, Chen Mo judged that these two young men were most likely subordinates or students of the white-haired elder.

As for the last person—

He sat at the edge of the sofa, dressed in black sportswear. Tall and powerfully built, his expression had remained unchanged since he entered.

Hmm…

Probably a bodyguard.

"Sorry, I only just moved in, so there's basically nothing prepared at home yet," Chen Mo said apologetically as he poured a cup of hot water for each of them.

"Hehe, it's us who are intruding," the white-haired elder replied with a chuckle. He took a sip of water and waved his hand lightly.

"It's this old man's fault for being too impatient. As soon as I learned your livestream had ended, I urged Xiao Wang to bring us over to find you."

After a bit of casual small talk, Chen Mo learned that the white-haired elder was an expert from the Monster Research and Countermeasure Bureau. Judging by his position, he seemed to hold considerable authority within the bureau.

The identities of the other three also matched Chen Mo's initial guesses.

Holding his cup, Chen Mo appeared calm on the surface, but internally he was fully alert.

So… this was getting his water meter checked, huh.

He'd known this day would come sooner or later, but when it actually arrived, saying he wasn't nervous would be a lie.

"Comrade Xiao Mo, you probably already have a general idea of why we're here," Professor Zhou said with a gentle smile.

"But you don't need to be nervous. Just think of this as a conversation among friends."

Officer Wang, sitting to the side, nodded as well.

"I've already heard from Xiao Lan that you seem to know the truth behind the Pidgey Courier project. At this point, we won't hide it from you anymore. After watching your livestreams, Professor Zhou has been thinking of ways to subtly help Pidgey—and more Pokémon that pose little threat to humans—integrate into human society. The Pidgey Courier is one of our attempts."

"And the murals you saw in that ancient ruin from the Pokémon world during your stream gave us even more confidence. Pokémon really can reach a state of coexistence with humans."

After Officer Wang finished speaking, the young man in the white lab coat quickly took a document out of his briefcase and handed it to Chen Mo.

"If you don't mind, please take a look at this. It outlines some of our ideas for the future planning of certain Pokémon."

Chen Mo took the document and carefully flipped through it. Inside, he found not only the familiar Pidgey Courier project, but also plans involving Pokémon like Butterfree and Combee.

They were all Pokémon he had already explained in his livestreams.

And the document didn't just talk about ideals. It detailed which Pokémon were suited for which industries, how Pokémon-based companies could be launched and operated, and what kinds of impacts—both positive and negative—Pokémon entering the market might have.

From this document alone, it was clear that the creators genuinely wanted Pokémon to gradually integrate into modern society, using the value Pokémon could generate to help the public accept them, thereby reducing society's overall hostility toward Pokémon.
