After rounding a bend and following the straight highway ahead, at around eight in the evening, Chen Mo and his group finally caught sight of Lavender Town—its lights glowing beneath the darkened sky.
"The last time I came here was right after I graduated, around this same season," Ah Hui said, looking around with emotion. "Back then, a lot of people heading to Evergreen Forest would choose to stop by Lavender Town for the night. There were tons of tourists—especially in the evenings. Free parking spots were impossible to grab. Nothing like it is now…"
He glanced at the sparsely filled free parking lot and couldn't help but sigh.
From the moment they entered Lavender Town, Chen Mo and the others had already noticed it.
The once-bustling town Ah Hui described had become eerily desolate.
Even though it was only eight o'clock, many shops had already closed early.
There were few pedestrians on the streets. Occasionally, they'd run into one or two people, but they all walked briskly. When they spotted Chen Mo and the others—clearly outsiders—their eyes widened as if they'd seen a ghost. Without saying a word, they would immediately hurry away.
"…I remember the locals here being pretty friendly in the past…"
After being rebuffed yet again, Ah Hui scratched his head, his face full of embarrassment.
The friendliness he always took pride in seemed to have completely failed him here. Even when he approached with a warm smile, the responses he got from Lavender Town's residents were nothing but cold, disdainful looks—like he was an idiot.
The livestream chat immediately exploded in sympathy.
[What's wrong with the people here? Brother Hui was being so polite, and they wouldn't even say a single word.]
[This is with Mo-baby and Ah Hui not bringing Pichu and Caterpie along. If they did, I can't imagine how these people would react.]
[Honestly, it's kind of understandable. With Pokémon around, tourism has taken a hit, and now the town is supposedly haunted. The locals are probably just numb at this point.]
[I get it, but it's not Brother Hui's fault things turned out this way. This attitude is still pretty ugly.]
[Are Mo-baby and the others going to end up sleeping on the street tonight?]
[Brother Hui hyped up Lavender Town so much that I was tempted to visit someday—but after seeing this on stream… yeah, no thanks.]
Seeing what had just happened, the viewers all stood up for Ah Hui.
Chen Mo frowned as well.
Originally, he'd planned to ask the locals about the "haunting" incident—to get more details and see whether it might actually be caused by a Ghost-type Pokémon.
But with people unwilling to even talk to one another, let alone outsiders, Chen Mo found himself at a loss.
"Brother Mo, don't worry. I know an inn owner here," Ah Hui said, thinking Chen Mo was worried about accommodations. "He just replied and said he's willing to let us stay for the night."
"Did you tell him about the Pokémon?" Chen Mo asked.
"Ah—!"
Ah Hui froze, his expression instantly stiffening.
"I… I forgot…"
"You really are something."
Chen Mo shook his head helplessly.
"It's fine, Brother Mo. I'll ask him right now."
"There's no need to put the inn owner in a tough spot," Chen Mo said calmly. "What I care about isn't where we sleep tonight. If you and Brother Yi don't mind, I'm perfectly fine just spending the night in the off-road vehicle."
Hearing this, Ah Hui put his phone down, looking confused.
"Then, Brother Mo, you—"
"Do you remember the Pokémon attributes I mentioned during my earlier streams?"
"Come on, are you kidding?" Ah Hui said immediately. "Aside from the time I connected with you on stream, I've watched all your other streams at least twice—just from replays!"
He lifted his chin slightly, looking a bit proud as he faced the camera.
Do you even know what a die-hard fan is?
"There are eighteen Pokémon attributes in total, namely—"
"Stop!"
Ignoring Ah Hui's wounded look, Chen Mo cut him off.
"Simply put, I suspect that the haunting incident in Lavender Town might be related to Ghost-type Pokémon. That's also why I chose to come here—to investigate the situation properly."
As soon as Chen Mo said this, the livestream erupted into discussion.
After all, in the previous two streams, the most common Pokémon they'd seen in Hongjingpo Forest were Grass-types and Bug-types. They hadn't seen a single Ghost-type Pokémon—only heard Chen Mo casually mention a few particularly dangerous ones.
[I thought the haunting thing was just a joke. Turns out there really is something going on.]
[No kidding. Even if you didn't believe it at first, just stepping into this town and feeling the atmosphere—you can tell something's wrong.]
[Ghost-type Pokémon causing trouble? That sounds kind of scary.]
[I remember Mo-baby mentioning a Pokémon called Litwick before—one that feeds on the life force of humans and Pokémon. Honestly, ever since that description, I've had a psychological shadow about Ghost-types.]
[Maybe… Mo-baby, you really shouldn't get involved in this.]
[If this haunting isn't dealt with, Lavender Town's situation will only get worse. I support Mo-baby—even if I'm a bit scared of Ghost-types too.]
[Mo-baby is a science popularizer, not a savior. There's no need to take such a risk and provoke a Ghost-type Pokémon that might hurt people.]
[And how do you know it'll hurt people? Do you even know how that police officer got injured?]
The barrage of comments grew increasingly chaotic.
It was true—Ghost-type Pokémon were extremely special. Some of them even harbored deep hostility toward humans. Just as Chen Mo was about to explain the situation to Ah Hui and Brother Yi—
A male voice suddenly spoke up from nearby.
"…Mo-baby?!"
The voice was young and unfamiliar.
Hearing that distinctive nickname, Chen Mo turned his head.
About ten meters away stood a clean-cut young man with both hands wrapped in obvious bandages. He stared at Chen Mo in disbelief.
The instant he saw Chen Mo turn around and confirmed his guess, the young man's eyes lit up. He immediately jogged over with quick, eager steps.
"Mo—Mr. Chen Mo, it really is you."
But when he reached Chen Mo and noticed the camera on Brother Yi's shoulder, his expression suddenly turned shy.
"Sorry, Mr. Chen Mo. My name is Qiao Cheng. I'm a fan from your livestream."
And the moment Qiao Cheng called out "Mo-baby," the entire livestream had already dropped the previous argument and shifted topics at lightning speed.
[Holy crap, this is insane! Mo-baby actually ran into a fan here?!]
[This has to be the first time he's met a fan live on stream, right? That 'Mo-baby' call just gave me a real 'meeting a friend in a foreign land' feeling. This town finally doesn't feel so cold.]
[This guy looks kind of handsome, actually—though still a bit behind Mo-baby (~ ̄▽ ̄)~]
[This bro showed up at the perfect time. Mo-baby was probably just worrying about how to find someone to ask about the situation.]
