Chapter 3 - The Runaway's Gambit

Elara ran, her lungs burning, her muscles screaming in protest. The ruins were her sanctuary, a labyrinth she knew intimately. She leaped over fallen debris, squeezed through narrow passages, and used the shadows to her advantage. The Guild members were relentless, their heavy footsteps echoing behind her.

She needed to lose them, to find a safe haven where she could decipher the tablet and uncover its secrets. Her thoughts turned to Kai, an old scholar who lived on the outskirts of Neo-Veridia. He was a recluse, shunned by the city's elite for his unorthodox theories about Veridia's past. But he was also the only person she trusted with her knowledge.

Reaching the edge of the ruins, Elara slipped into the bustling streets of Neo-Veridia. The city was a stark contrast to the desolate landscape she had just left behind. Towering structures of steel and glass pierced the sky, powered by a network of intricate energy conduits. Flying vehicles zipped through the air, their lights blurring against the neon glow of advertisements.

Elara blended into the crowd, her threadbare cloak and dirt-stained face making her almost invisible. She navigated the crowded marketplaces, dodging vendors hawking their wares and avoiding the watchful eyes of the city guard. The Obsidian Guild had informants everywhere, and she couldn't risk being recognized.

As she approached the city gates, she spotted a familiar figure leaning against a wall. It was Rylan, a street urchin with a knack for information. He was a valuable asset, a source of rumors and whispers that often proved to be surprisingly accurate.

"Rylan," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I need your help."

Rylan grinned, revealing a set of crooked teeth. "What's the word, Elara? Trouble finds you as easily as rust finds metal."

"I need to get out of the city," she said, her eyes darting nervously. "And I need to do it without being seen."

Rylan nodded, his expression turning serious. "I know a way. But it'll cost you."

Elara hesitated. She didn't have much to offer. But she knew that Rylan was her only hope. "What do you want?" she asked.

"Information," Rylan said, his eyes gleaming. "I hear the Obsidian Guild is sniffing around Old Veridia. Tell me what they're after, and I'll get you out of the city."

Elara knew she was playing a dangerous game. Trusting Rylan was a gamble. But she had no other choice. "I found something," she said, her voice low. "A tablet. It's connected to King Alaric."

Rylan's eyes widened. "Alaric? Now that's a story worth hearing. Alright, Elara. Let's get you out of here."
