Lily's
I sat curled up on the edge of the large leather couch in the living room. My knees were pulled tightly against my chest, and I had my arms wrapped around my legs as if I were trying to hold myself together. I felt like if I let go, everything inside me would just spill out onto the floor. The house was far too quiet, and the only sound was the ticking of the clock on the wall. Every second that passed sounded louder than the one before it. It felt like the clock was mocking me, reminding me of how much time I had spent sitting here alone.
Peter had told me to leave the school early that afternoon. He didn't ask me; he told me. He said he had business to take care of—important pack business that didn't involve me. He told me he wouldn't be long, but that was hours ago. Now, it was well past midnight, and the house felt cold.
