Chapter 41 - The Space Between Truth and Denial

Lin Chen didn't move. He stood there, staring, as if the moment would correct itself if he waited long enough..It didn't.Xu Yang stood still.for the first time since everything began he didn't know what to do.He had faced distortions and threads. He had stood in moments where reality itself bent and rewrote around him and yet none of that felt as uncertain as this.

His gaze rested on Lin Chen was stood there unmoving. He was Watching and Waiting.

A thought surfaced unwanted.

What if he doesn't accept it?(.....)

It lingered then deepened.

What if this is where it ends?(.....)

A pause. Xu Yang's fingers curled slightly at his side.

You should have said something earlier. (.....)

Another thought followed immediately

Would it have changed anything? (.....)

He didn't have an answer.

Because he already knew the truth.

Xu Yang's chest tightened slightly Subtle and

Unfamiliar.

If he rejects this…(....)

A brief pause Then that's it.

No going back, No returning to quiet moments.

His gaze lowered for a fraction of a second then lifted again. He didn't step back didn't hide.Because even now even knowing what might happen he didn't want to lie.Xu Yang stood in front of him calm, steady, completely out of place. For a few seconds, no one spoke.

Lin Chen stood there quietly before finally asking, "Where is my cat?" His voice was soft, but there was an unmistakable tension beneath it.Qing Li let out a small breath and replied, "…You're looking at him." Lin Chen didn't even spare him a glance. "I didn't ask you." His eyes remained locked on Xu Yang, unwavering and intense. "Answer me."Xu Yang met his gaze, his expression unreadable before quietly replying, "…I'm here."

Lin Chen's jaw tightened and he shook his head. "No. Don't say it like that." Qing Li frowned slightly and said, "You're making this harder than it needs to be." "Stay out of it!" Lin Chen said flatly without looking at him. Yan Luo finally spoke, his voice low and calm. "It's already reacting."Lin Chen ignored him too. Instead, he took another step closer toward Xu Yang, his shoulders tense and his gaze searching. "Say it clearly."

Xu Yang didn't move or step back. He simply looked at him and said, "I was there." Lin chen answered, "That's not what I asked." Xu Yang continued, "I stayed with you." Lin Chen's expression flickered before he shook his head again. "That wasn't the question either."Lin Chen asked, "Was any of it real?" Xu Yang didn't hesitate. "Yes." Lin Chen looked away for a moment and quietly exhaled before lifting his gaze again. There was something different in his eyes now, not just confusion but something sharper beneath it. "You followed me everywhere." "Yes." "You stayed near me… even when I didn't call you." "Yes." A small, dry laugh escaped Lin Chen before he shook his head lightly. "Right."

He shook his head slightly, like he was trying to piece something together and failing, then spoke quietly, "I talked to you," followed by a pause as he exhaled and added, "Like an idiot." Xu Yang didn't respond, and Lin Chen's gaze stayed fixed as he continued, "I told you things I wouldn't tell anyone else," his voice tightening a little as his fingers flexed at his side, "You just sat there… listening."

he lowered his voice slightly, "I thought you didn't understand." Xu Yang's gaze dropped a fraction before he replied, "I understood." That single line made Lin Chen go still for a moment, his breath catching as he stared at him, and muttered, "Of course you did." His hand curled slightly at his side as he stepped a little closer, "So what was that?" he asked, not looking away from Xu Yang, "Was I just entertainment?" Xu Yang answered ,"No." but Lin Chen's expression didn't soften, only hardening as he shook his head once, "You expect me to believe that?" he said quietly, jaw tightening as he gestured faintly with his hand, "From your side, it must've looked ridiculous." He let out a short, humorless laugh and added, "Me talking. You just… watching." His eyes narrowed slightly as he continued, "You must've been enjoying it."

Xu Yang's expression shifted just barely, a faint tension in his gaze as he replied, "No." Lin Chen let out another small laugh that faded quickly as he asked again, "Then what?" Xu Yang holding his gaze and saying calmly, "I stayed because I wanted to." Lin Chen's body stilled at that, his expression flickering for a second as Xu Yang continued without wavering, "I didn't have to, I wasn't forced to, I wasn't pretending," then a brief pause before he finished, "I stayed because it mattered."

Lin Chen's breath hitched slightly, his eyes lowering for a moment before lifting again, unable to immediately respond, and in that pause the silence between them felt different, no longer distant but fragile, as if something had cracked open. Nearby, Qing Li shifted his stance and frowned, breaking the moment as he said sharply, "We don't have time for this." Lin Chen turned his head slightly, irritation flashing in his eyes as he snapped, "Then leave." That immediate response made Qing Li freeze for a second, his brows tightening as he turned slowly, then his gaze shifted toward Yan Luo in silent complaint, while Yan Luo met it and the corner of his lips lifted just slightly, not quite a smile but enough to show quiet amusement, which only deepened Qing Li's irritation as he muttered under his breath, "You think this is funny?" but Yan Luo didn't answer, the faint trace of that almost-smile lingering as he looked away again, making Qing Li click his tongue and turn aside, clearly deciding to drop it, while Lin Chen didn't notice or didn't care at all, his entire focus remaining locked on Xu Yang.

Yan Luo's gaze slowly moved between Lin Chen and Xu Yang, then briefly lifted toward the surrounding air as if sensing something unseen, his expression tightening slightly as he spoke in a low voice, "It's getting worse." while Lin Chen barely glanced at him and replied flatly without taking his eyes off Xu Yang, "Let it!" before stepping forward again and fixing his stare on Xu Yang as he asked, sharper now, "What are you?" Xu Yang held his gaze steadily, his expression unchanged but quieter in tone as he answered, "I don't fully know!"

Which made Lin Chen let out laugh and tilt his head slightly in disbelief, "That's not an answer!" he said immediately, and Xu Yang simply replied, "I know!" prompting Lin Chen to press harder with a step forward, jaw tense, "Then give me one!" while Xu Yang stayed silent for a moment as Qing Li crossed his arms and interjected with a frown, "You're asking questions he can't answer." but Lin Chen didn't even turn his head as he shot back coldly, "I didn't ask you either!" making Qing Li click his tongue in irritation, "You're really testing my patience!" to which Lin Chen instantly responded, "Then go!"

Yan Luo looked at them and said, "The conversation itself is triggering it!" and Lin Chen frowned slightly, finally glancing sideways, "Triggering what?" but no one answered directly as Xu Yang took a small step forward and said softly, "Lin Chen!" Lin Chen instinctively stepped back once, his voice dropping, "Don't!" while Xu Yang stopped immediately and Lin Chen added again, "Don't come closer!" before hesitating "You're not.." stopping himself mid-sentence as his gaze flickered with conflict.

Xu Yang watched him closely and said , "I'm still the same!" but Lin Chen shook his head immediately, "No, you're not!" then after a beat repeated, "You're not!" letting silence stretch as Lin Chen suddenly added, "You ate with me!" and Xu Yang answered simply, "Yes!" followed by Lin Chen pressing on,"You stayed in my room?!" and again Xu yang confirmed, "Yes!" then Lin chen's voice tightened,"You slept there like it was normal?!" and Xu Yang replied evenly, "It was!" which made Lin Chen shake his head once more, "That's not normal!!"

Xu Yang said quietly, "It was for me!" and Lin Chen immediately shot back, "That's not the same thing." before the air thickened and he asked softer, almost breaking, "Why didn't you say anything?" to which Xu Yang didn't respond right away and only asked instead, "Would it have changed anything?" and Lin Chen answered instantly, eyes sharp, "Yes!" then after a beat added quieter, "I would've known!" while Xu Yang's gaze lowered slightly as he replied, "You still do!" but Lin Chen immediately rejected it, "That's not the same." as the atmosphere shifted again and Qing Li tensed, glancing around, "It's tightening again!" while Yan Luo nodded once, voice calm but serious, "We're close to a limit."

Lin Chen briefly looked between them before returning his focus to Xu Yang, voice low and urgent, "What are you two talking about?" but Qing Li cut in, "Something you don't need to worry about right now,"and Lin chen frowned, "That doesn't sound reassuring." to which Qing Li answered bluntly, "It's not supposed to be." before Lin Chen turned back fully to Xu Yang and demanded, "Say it properly." stepping closer with unblinking eyes, "Say who you are?" as Xu Yang met his gaze without hesitation, and Xu Yang began, "I…" as everything suddenly broke not shattered, but as if the world itself skipped a beat and sound vanished mid-breath.

Lin Chen's breath hitched as everything around him went unnaturally hollow, like someone had pulled the air out of the moment. His ears rang faintly, the silence pressing in harder than any noise."What..."

The light flickered once, sharp and unnatural, and Xu Yang's expression shifted instantly as he said in a low voice, "Too late." Lin Chen snapped his head up immediately, voice tense, "What does that mean?" but no one answered him because the air itself moved, thin glowing lines appearing in space like cracks forming in glass, spreading wider as everything around them turned a deep red and the sky above went blank, Qing Li letting out a low whistle as he looked around and muttered, "Well. That's new."

Yan Luo's eyes narrowed and he corrected quietly, "No. That's worse." The threads snapped forward suddenly, fast and precise, heading straight toward Xu Yang as Qing Li shouted sharply, "Move!" and Xu Yang stepped back quickly, the space around him warping slightly as if reality bent just enough to slow the incoming threads, not stopping them but dragging their motion like resistance against something not fully of this world. His hand lifted instinctively, not in defense but as if reaching for something unseen, fingers tightening in mid-air, and the threads reacted faintly, trembling for a fraction.

Xu Yang's eyes sharpened, then changed subtly as a faint unnatural glow flickered within them like fractured light, making every thread momentarily clearer in his perception, every line and pull visible as he breathed out shakily, "I can…" before raising his other hand slower, steadier, as if grounding himself, and pulling not physically, but through something unseen shifting in response.

The nearest threads jerked violently, their direction twisting as if forced under a command they resisted, and Qing Li blinked in surprise, "Wait!" while Yan Luo narrowed his gaze and said flatly, "He's not just slowing them." as Xu Yang's jaw tightened and he forced out, "I can't… hold…" while the threads suddenly resisted harder, snapping back against his influence with force, the glow in his eyes flickering unstable as his breath hitched and he coughed sharply, blood slipping from the corner of his lips.

Qing Li's expression dropped immediately as he looked at him and shouted, "Xu Yang!! Oh no, that's bad!" but Xu Yang didn't stop, his fingers tightening again despite the trembling as the threads shook, some bending and others snapping while most pushed back harder, and his vision blurred briefly as the glow in his eyes flickered again while he muttered, "I can't hold them…" Qing Li clicked his tongue and shot back, "Then don't try to be a hero!" as wind suddenly exploded outward in surge, slicing through the air and knocking several threads off course, though most remained intact and shifted back into formation as Qing Li frowned and muttered, "They're really stubborn… what are they, emotionally attached to ruining our day?" while Yan Luo replied coldly, "Focus!" and Qing Li snapped, "I am focusing. I'm focusing on how annoying this is!"

Another thread lunged forward and Xu Yang reacted instantly, forcing his hand out as he said sharply, "Stop..!" and for a split second the thread obeyed, freezing mid-air, before snapping back harder and making Xu Yang wince as another drop of blood slipped down his chin. Qing Li glanced at him quickly and said, "Hey! Are you out of your mind? maybe stop doing that before you die dramatically in front of us," while Xu Yang steadied his breath unevenly and answered quietly, "I'm not dying!" and Qing Li immediately scoffed without hesitation, "That's exactly what people who are about to die say."

Yan Luo stepped forward as the pressure in the air deepened, his expression cooling into focus while low steady flames ignited in his palm, and in that same moment his appearance shifted his blue hair slowly streaking into a deep burning red at the tips, as if ember-light had crawled through every strand, while the flames around his hand didn't stay ordinary fire but took shape, curling and twisting into the outline of a massive flame wolf with burning eyes and a shifting body that looked half smoke, half living inferno, its form pacing silently beside him as if ready to tear through space itself, and he said evenly, "If you lose control, it gets worse."

Xu Yang exhaled through his teeth, still holding the strain as he muttered, "I noticed." and Yan Luo's gaze didn't soften when he replied, "Then stop pushing it!" but Xu Yang didn't answer because even while struggling he refused to release the pressure, his fingers curling again more carefully this time as if trying to hold something fragile without breaking it, the faint glow in his eyes dimming slightly but still lingering like a dying star refusing to disappear, and under his breath he said, "Just a little longer!" which Qing Li heard immediately as he tilted his head and muttered, "You're really stubborn too, you know that?" while Xu Yang let out a shaky breath and answered quietly, "I've been told!" and Qing Li narrowed his eyes slightly and asked, "Yeah? By who?" before Xu Yang paused briefly and said, "You!" making Qing Li blink once before exhaling and looking away, "Oh… fair."

Another surge of threads ripped through the air toward them, and Qing Li groaned loudly as his expression shifted his silver hair lifting as if caught in an unseen wind, his eyes turning a glowing icy blue while faint fox-like markings briefly shimmered across his skin like spectral lines, and a second tail-shaped aura of wind flickered behind him, sharp and elegant like a fox demon made of storm, as he muttered, "Okay, I take it back. I don't have time for this!" while wind exploded outward from him in controlled violent arcs, and Yan Luo's flames followed, the flame wolf behind him snapping its burning jaws forward as the fire surged in coordination.

Xu Yang remained barely steady in the center of it all still holding the invisible tension in the air, and the strands recoiled violently as parts of them burned, edges fraying like threads of reality being torn apart, and Qing Li glanced sideways and muttered, "Oh? So you can be useful." while Yan Luo didn't even look at him and said flatly, "Try not to slow me down." prompting Qing Li to scoff, "Wow. Rude."

Another thread snapped forward but Qing Li reacted instantly, flicking his wrist as a compressed gust of wind slammed into it mid-air and twisted its path away, while he added casually, "At least I don't set everything on fire when I panic." and Yan Luo replied without hesitation, "I'm not panicking," to which Qing Li shot back, "Sure. You just look like that all the time?" as Yan Luo's flames flared higher for a moment and the flame wolf's eyes brightened like a warning light, and he said coldly, "That was a warning," making Qing Li smirk faintly and ask, "Oh? Should I be scared?"

A thread suddenly sliced between them too fast, and both reacted at the same time wind and fire colliding in mid-air as Qing Li's force and Yan Luo's flame wolf surged together, the impact scattering sparks and pressure outward in a violent ripple that distorted space for a split second, and Qing Li's expression darkened as he snapped, "Watch it!" while Yan Luo replied instantly, "Then stay out of my range." and Qing Li shot back, "You are the range." as another clash followed too close, forcing both energies to grind against each other.

The threads seized the moment and surged forward again, faster and more aggressive, slipping through the gap between their coordination, and Qing li snapped,"seriously? We're doing this now?" while Yan Luo's eyes sharpened and he replied, "You started it!" and Qing Li scoffed, "I made a comment!" and Yan Luo's voice dropped colder, "You're still talking!" prompting Qing Li to retort, "And you're still annoying." but before it could escalate further Xu Yang's voice cut through sharply, "Enough." His tone wasn't loud, but it struck like pressure in the air itself, making both of them pause slightly as he exhaled unevenly and forced his hand forward again.

The faint glow in his eyes flickering as the nearest threads wavered for a split second under his control, and he said, "If you two keep fighting each other… you can argue later after we're not getting erased," leaving a brief silence before Qing Li clicked his tongue and muttered, "…Fine!" Yan Luo didn't respond but steadied his flames, the flame wolf lowering its stance as another wave of threads surged in, and Qing Li rolled his shoulders once and said, "After this, I'm definitely arguing." to which Yan Luo replied calmly, "You always are." and Qing Li smirked faintly, "Yeah, well, this time I have better material."Xu Yang didn't answer either of them, only tightening his grip on the invisible pressure in the air and holding the line.

Another thread shot toward Xu Yang, closer than before, moving faster than the rest as if it had finally adjusted to him, and Yan Luo reacted instantly, flames snapping forward in a clean intercept as he said sharply, "Don't let it touch you." while Xu Yang exhaled through clenched teeth and muttered, "I figured." but Yan Luo's eyes stayed fixed as he added coldly, "You don't look like you did." and Xu Yang forced his stance steadier, replying, "I'm managing." only for Yan Luo to cut in immediately, "You're barely managing." as Qing Li suddenly interjected with frustration, "Can you two stop argue now? How many times I have to say!"

Yan Luo didn't even turn his head as he replied flatly,"Then stop interrupting!" making Qing Li blink in disbelief before snapping back, "I'm interrupting? You're the one criticizing him mid-fight!" while Yan Luo answered without hesitation, "At least I'm being accurate." and Qing Li shot back with a sharp flick of his wrist, sending another gust tearing through the threads as he said, "Oh, great. Next time, maybe give him a performance review after we survive."

Xu Yang let out a strained breath and muttered, "Can we not schedule my evaluation right now." just as another thread snapped toward him and he flinched, forcing his hand up again, the movement shaking as he tried to slow it, only for the thread to jerk violently against his control until Yan Luo's flames burned through it mid-air."Focus!" Yan Luo said simply, and Xu Yang muttered back, "I am focusing!" but Yan Luo didn't ease up as he replied, "Then focus better." which made Qing Li groan loudly and turn slightly as he snapped, "He's literally coughing blood and you're telling him to 'focus better'? Do you hear yourself?" and Yan Luo glanced at him with a cold calmness as he said, "Do you want me to lower my standards?" and Qing Li answered immediately, "Yes. A lot. Right now."

A brief pause broke through the chaos, and even Xu Yang let out a weak, breathless sound that resembled a laugh as he muttered, "You two are unbelievable." while Yan Luo replied without missing a beat, "Not the time." and Qing Li added quickly,"Exactly. So stop talking like this is training," just as another wave of threads surged forward again, forcing both wind and fire to rise in response.

Qing Li's expression sharpened instantly as wind gathered violently around him and he muttered, "Alright, enough talking. If we mess this up, I'm blaming both of you." while Yan Luo answered calmly, "You already are." and Qing Li paused for half a second before saying, "Fair." as wind exploded outward again, slicing through multiple threads at once, the air screaming under pressure as the battlefield distorted further.

Lin Chen flinched at the sight, finally able to see it more clearly now thin glowing lines ripping through space like living weapons, every movement striking like invisible thunder, and he whispered under his breath, "What are those things?" but no one answered, or perhaps there was no time to, because everything moved too fast, another thread snapping toward him directly before curving sharply at the last second and missing him entirely, then another passing again without touching him, as if something refused to acknowledge his presence, and Lin Chen's chest tightened as he muttered, "Why aren't they..."

A sharp gust cut him off as Qing Li's wind surged past again while he shouted, "Xu Yang! How long can you hold that?" and Xu Yang answered immediately through strained breath, "Not long!" which made Qing Li snap back, "Define 'not long'!" and Xu Yang forced out, "Very not long!" prompting Qing Li to shout, "That's not helpful!"

Yan Luo moved again as flames expanded wider, pushing the threads back in a controlled arc while he said calmly, "They're focusing on him. We keep them off, he stabilizes." and Qing Li snorted while deflecting another strike, "That plan sounds suspiciously optimistic," to which Yan Luo replied without looking at him, "Do you have a better one?" and Qing Li answered instantly, "Yes… leave," earning a flat refusal, "No!" followed by Qing Li's annoyed retort, "Then stop complaining!" as the battle tightened again and the threads surged harder into the shrinking space between them.

Another stronger wave hit, heavier than before, as more threads tore through space with increased pressure.Xu Yang staggered slightly under the force, the distortion around him flickering and for a brief second everything slowed again, the threads hesitating mid-motion as though caught in uncertainty, before the air snapped back harder than before.

Qing Li's expression sharpened instantly as he said, "They're pushing through!" while Yan Luo replied without hesitation, "Then push harder." earning an immediate retort from Qing Li, "Easy for you to say!" as wind roared outward again, stronger this time, dragging everything into violent motion and forcing the threads back, though not as far as before and not as cleanly, while Qing Li narrowed his eyes and muttered, "They're learning," and Xu Yang corrected quietly through strained breath, "They're adapting," which made Qing Li click his tongue and say, "That's worse."

Lin Chen took a cautious step forward without thinking, unnoticed by the others who were fully occupied, and he called out uncertainly, "Xiao Ye!" his voice sounding small against the chaos, but Xu Yang didn't turn as he immediately shouted back, "Stay back!" and Lin Chen snapped, "I'm already back!" before Xu Yang forced out again, sharper, "Further back!" while Lin Chen frowned and replied, "There is no further back!" as another thread rushed toward Xu Yang at high speed, only to be intercepted mid-air by Yan Luo's flames, burning it apart instantly, while Yan Luo said coldly, "You're slipping." and Xu Yang answered, "I know!" followed by Yan Luo pressing, "Then fix it." and Xu Yang replying through clenched breath, "I'm trying!" as Qing Li shot him a sideways look and muttered, "You're being very unhelpful right now." to which Yan Luo finally glanced at him and said, "And you're talking too much." prompting Qing Li to snap back, "I always talk this much." and Yan Luo responded flatly, "Yes. That's the problem."

Qing Li clicked his tongue but didn't continue because another wave hit harder than before, more aggressive and more controlled, and the air itself visibly warped, bending in unnatural curves that even Lin Chen could now see as he muttered under his breath, "This isn't normal." while Qing Li replied quietly, "No… it's really not." as Xu Yang's breathing grew uneven and the distortion around him flickered again, just long enough for a single thread to break through the defense and shoot directly toward him, making Qing Li shout, "Xu Yang!" as time seemed to stretch and Yan Luo moved instantly, flames surging forward to intercept it and burning it just short of impact.

Xu Yang froze for a moment before exhaling sharply and saying, "That was close!" while Yan Luo replied immediately, "Don't let there be a next time." and Xu Yang muttered back, "I'll do my best!" earning a flat correction, "Do better," as Qing Li rolled his eyes and said, "He's doing fine. You're just dramatic," while Yan Luo answered without emotion, "I'm practical!" and Qing Li shot back, "You're annoying!" and Yan Luo replied, "And you're loud." before Qing Li started, "Can you both…" only for both Yan Luo and Xu Yang to cut him off in unison with, "Shut up?" which made Qing Li pause mid-breath before muttering, "Okay, that was rude."

For a brief moment, despite everything collapsing around them, there was an almost absurd normality in their exchange, but it shattered immediately as the threads stopped attacking all at once, leaving an unnatural silence that made Qing Li frown and say, "That's not good!" while Yan Luo added quietly, "No. It's not!" and Xu Yang's gaze sharpened as he said, "They're not stopping." while Lin Chen looked around with uneven breathing and asked, "Then why did they…" but Xu Yang cut in, "They're changing!" as the threads that had vanished were not gone but had instead pulled back and repositioned themselves, gathering together into denser, more structured formations that looked less like scattered attacks and more like something being assembled.

Qing Li muttered under his breath, "That's new!" while Yan Luo didn't respond at all, his flames burning brighter as the pressure increased again, and Lin Chen turned to Xu Yang, no longer confused but clearly worried as he asked, "You're in the middle of this, aren't you?" but Xu Yang didn't answer, his focus locked forward as the air tightened again, heavier and darker than before, and after a slow controlled exhale he said quietly, "It's adapting again!" as the atmosphere around them shifted once more, making it clear this time it no longer felt like something they could simply push back with force alone.
