Chapter 23 - Merging!!!

The witch's grin faltered as she sensed it — that pulse of power, ancient and familiar, humming between Lorin and Seraphina. Her eyes widened, and for the first time, true fear flickered across her face.

"This…" she whispered, stepping back. "This only happens when two souls are bound to the amulet."

Maelren's staff trembled in Lorin's grip, vibrating from the unseen energy crackling through the air. Red veins of light crept across the ground, threading between the two of them like living fire.

The amulet burned brighter on Seraphina's chest — almost desperate. Deep within its core, something sacred stirred. It was afraid… afraid because Seraphina's strength alone wasn't enough to face the witch.

So it reached for what it remembered.

Lorin.

The power surged outward, merging them in a heartbeat.

Seraphina gasped, trembling. "Lorin—!"

"I'm fine," he managed, though his voice strained under the pain. Crimson light flickered behind his eyes, his veins glowing faintly red.

The witch's eyes gleamed. "Fascinating… the amulet remembers. It binds again."

Her voice wavered between awe and rage. "You are his echo — whether you accept it or not. And I will make you remember who you are. You will give us the power we seek."

"Never!" Seraphina cried, unleashing everything she had left.

The light collided with the witch's darkness. The courtyard erupted — cracks split the stone, thunder screamed above.

Then silence.

The witch's laughter echoed through the smoke, low and venomous. "This isn't over," she hissed, her form dissolving into violet mist. "You'll remember him, Lorin. Even if it kills me, I'll make you him again."

And she vanished.

The purple haze faded, the soldiers slowly lowering their weapons. Seraphina collapsed, clutching the amulet as its glow dimmed to a faint, trembling pulse.

Lorin knelt beside her, chest heaving, the witch's words still echoing in his mind.

You'll remember him.

For a moment, his reflection in the amulet shifted — another face flickered behind his own.

A stranger.

A ghost.

A memory.

The courtyard was a ruin of cracked stone and fading smoke when the great doors burst open.

King Alaric strode in first, his cloak sweeping through the ash, followed by the royal council and Kael. Guards poured into the courtyard, their weapons raised but their faces uncertain — whatever had just happened, the air still hummed with something alive.

The faint crimson glow of the Crimson Amulet flickered on Seraphina's chest. She knelt weakly beside Lorin, whose eyes still burned faintly red in the dying light.

King Alaric's voice broke the silence. "What happened here?"

Seraphina lifted her head slowly, her voice trembling but steady. "Your Majesty… a witch appeared. She and her sorcerer attacked. We tried to fight her off."

Lorin's hand twitched against the ground, his knuckles pale. "She was strong — too strong. Then suddenly… something happened. The light— it just burst out of nowhere."

King Alaric's gaze darkened. "Light?"

Seraphina nodded faintly. "It came from the amulet. And when it did, we—" she glanced at Lorin "—we both felt it. Pain, but also… something else. Like it was pulling us together."

The council exchanged worried looks. One of them murmured, "Impossible. We heard rumors that it can only bond to one soul, not two."

Kael stepped forward, his tone calm but edged with unease. "Not entirely impossible."

All eyes turned to him.

He knelt near Seraphina, his gaze fixed on the dim glow of the amulet. "I've read the history of the Crimson Amulet. Not just the records we keep now, but the older texts — the forbidden pages that survived the First Era. There were whispers that the amulet once sought two destinies, not one. That it could bind two souls only when the time demanded it."

King Alaric's brow furrowed. "Are you saying this is what we've just witnessed?"

Kael hesitated. "Perhaps. The amulet may have recognized something in them — something it has been waiting for. It's rare, but… the legends spoke of this moment. The time when the amulet would awaken again and seek its final bearers."

Lorin's expression hardened. "Final bearers?"

Kael nodded gravely. "The amulet's story isn't just power — it's a test. If it truly bound you both, it might have sensed that seraphina can't handle the witch all alone and it also means you've been chosen to finish what began long ago."

King Alaric's eyes narrowed. "And if they fail?"

Kael looked up, his expression dark. "Then history repeats itself — but there will be a difference the amulet could erase time itself."

The courtyard fell into silence. The sky, once bruised with violet light, began to pale again. The soldiers lowered their weapons, but no one felt safe.

King Alaric finally turned to Lorin and Seraphina. "Whatever has awakened here… it must be watched carefully. If this amulet carries old power, it could destroy more than it protects."

He turned to leave with the council, his cloak whispering across the cracked floor.

Kael remained behind, his eyes still fixed on the amulet. His voice dropped to a low murmur.

"I once read a line from the forgotten chapters of its legend — 'When two souls meet beneath its flame, the world will remember what was lost.'"

Lorin glanced at him. "What does that mean?"

Kael exhaled slowly. "I'm not sure yet. But I think this is only the beginning."

The last traces of magic shimmered through the air, fading into quiet.

Seraphina pressed her hand to the amulet, its warmth trembling beneath her fingers — alive, aware.

And deep inside Lorin, a whisper stirred again — faint, echoing, and not his own.

A voice that said,

"You will remember."
