Chapter 16 - Chapter 16:- Family Lunch

The next day, Min-seok returned home in the late afternoon. He had spent the entire previous day with Mi-Kyung at the cabin, and his face still carried the soft, peaceful glow of someone who had finally let go of a little weight.

When he opened the door, the house was filled with the smell of delicious food and the sound of quiet laughter. Balloons in red, blue, and gold were tied to the chairs, floating gently.

A colorful handmade "Happy Birthday Oppa!" banner stretched across the living room wall, written in sparkly markers with little doodles of stars and hearts from Eun-ji.

The table was covered with his favorite dishes: steaming spicy tteokbokki, crispy fried chicken, japchae with extra sesame seeds, kimchi pancakes, and a big chocolate cake with messy frosting and "We ❤️ You Oppa" written in white icing—clearly decorated by Eun-ji's enthusiastic hands.

Soo-min, Hye-jin, Eun-ji, and Ji-yeon all turned to him at once, smiling wide.

"Surprise!" Eun-ji shouted, running over and throwing her arms around him in a big hug.

Min-seok blinked, stunned. "What… what is all this?"

Soo-min stepped forward, eyes shining with warmth. "You spent yesterday with Mi-Kyung unnie… so we wanted to celebrate your birthday with you today. We made everything ourselves. Come sit."

They pulled him gently to the table. Hye-jin lit the candles on the cake—twenty-five of them flickering brightly. "Make a wish, Oppa."

Min-seok looked around at them—his sisters and his cousin—all smiling at him with so much love. His throat tightened. He closed his eyes, made a silent wish, and blew out the candles in one breath. The room filled with cheers and clapping.

"Happy birthday, Oppa!" Eun-ji squealed, jumping up and down.

They ate together, laughing and talking over each other. Soo-min fed him a piece of fried chicken with chopsticks, teasing, "Open wide, birthday boy!" Hye-jin kept refilling his plate with tteokbokki, saying, "You have to eat more—you're too skinny!"

Eun-ji smeared a little frosting on his nose, giggling when he pretended to be mad, then wiped it off with her finger and licked it. Ji-yeon watched with a soft smile, occasionally reaching over to squeeze his hand or pass him more japchae.

After the food, they moved to the living room floor in a circle. Eun-ji turned on some upbeat music and started a silly dance party, pulling Min-seok up to dance with her. He laughed—really laughed—as she spun him around, stepping on his toes.

Soo-min and Hye-jin joined in, making goofy moves until everyone was breathless and giggling. Ji-yeon filmed it on her phone, smiling so wide her cheeks hurt.

Then they sat back down, still catching their breath. The mood shifted—nervous, tender.

Soo-min spoke first, voice soft. "Oppa… we need to tell you something. All of us."

Min-seok looked at them, confused but attentive.

Hye-jin took a deep breath. "We… we love you. Not just as a brother. More than that. We've felt it for a long time. We were scared to say it… but we can't hide it anymore."

Eun-ji nodded, tears already in her eyes. "I love you, Oppa. I always have. I don't want to lose you… but I want you to know how much you mean to me."

Ji-yeon looked at him with gentle, tear-filled eyes. "I love you too, Min-seok. More than family. More than anything. I've loved you for years. I just… never knew how to say it."

Min-seok stared at them, eyes wide. Tears slowly filled his eyes. He looked from one face to another—his sisters, his cousin—all looking at him with so much love, so much fear, so much hope.

He swallowed hard. Then he reached out, pulling them all into a tight group hug. His voice broke as he spoke.

"I… I love you all too. So much. You're my family. My everything. I could never—never—abandon any of you. You're my anchors. You've kept me going when I wanted to give up. I don't know how to love you the way you want… yet. But I want to try. I want to be there for you—all of you—in every way you need. I won't leave you behind. Ever."

He pulled back just enough to look at each of them, tears running down his cheeks now.

"I'm scared too. Scared of messing this up. Scared of hurting you. But I promise… I'll figure it out with you. Together. No hiding. No pretending. Just us."

Soo-min sobbed softly, hugging him tighter. "We don't want to lose you, Oppa."

"You won't," he whispered, kissing her forehead. "I'm yours. Always."

He turned to Hye-jin, kissing her cheek. "I'm yours too."

To Eun-ji, kissing her temple. "And yours."

To Ji-yeon, cupping her face gently and kissing her forehead. "And yours, Unnie. Always."

They all clung to him, crying and laughing at the same time—relief, love, and hope washing over them in waves.

Min-seok held them all close, heart full. "We'll figure it out," he whispered. "Together."

And in that moment, surrounded by the people who loved him most, he finally felt like he wasn't carrying the world alone anymore.

Mi-Kyung sat on her bed for a long moment after Tae-joon left, hands still shaking. She took a deep breath, picked up her phone, and opened her messages with Min-seok.

She typed slowly, carefully:

"Min-seok… Some things happened at home today. My kids and Tae-joon were waiting for me. They said bad things about you—called you aggressive, manipulative, said you're taking advantage of me because of the age gap.

Tae-joon was the one who filled their heads with lies. I defended you. I told them everything you did for me, how you saved me, how kind you are.

I got angry. I told them they have no right to judge my life after I raised them alone. I said if they still don't believe me, I'll invite you over this Sunday so they can see for themselves.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this… but I want them to know how wonderful you are. Can you come for lunch on Sunday? I'd also like to invite your sisters too. I want our families to meet. We're going to be family soon… right? ❤️"

She sent it, heart pounding.

A minute later, his reply came:

"Of course I'll come. I'll bring my sisters too. Don't worry. I'm not going anywhere. I love you."

Mi-Kyung smiled, tears of relief in her eyes. She typed back quickly:

"Thank you. I love you too. See you Sunday."

Sunday came. Mi-Kyung spent the morning cooking—galbi-jjim, japchae, kimchi fried rice, bulgogi, and a big fresh fruit platter. The house smelled warm and welcoming. She set the table with care, placing flowers in the center.

Min-seok arrived first with his three sisters—Soo-min, Hye-jin, and Eun-ji—and Ji-yeon. He carried a big box of bakery cakes and pastries as a gift.

Mi-Kyung opened the door, smiling brightly. "Come in, come in!"

Her own kids—Ha-yeon, Eun-seo, and Hyun-woo—stood in the living room, looking nervous but curious. Tae-joon was there too, standing in the corner with his arms crossed, face dark.

Min-seok stepped forward, bowing politely to Mi-Kyung's kids. "Hello. I'm Min-seok. Thank you for having us."

Ha-yeon smiled cautiously. "Hi… I'm Ha-yeon."

Eun-seo waved shyly. "I'm Eun-seo."

Hyun-woo nodded, still a little stiff. "Hyun-woo."

Min-seok's sisters introduced themselves warmly. Surprisingly, Eun-seo and Eun-ji locked eyes and both gasped at the same time.

"Eun-ji unnie?!" Eun-seo exclaimed, eyes wide. "You used to sing those beautiful songs in the art club break times!"

Eun-ji's face lit up like sunshine. "Eun-seo! Oh my god, yes! You were always the one sitting in the corner coloring while I sang! You'd stop drawing and just stare at me with those big eyes until I finished."

Eun-seo laughed, covering her mouth in happy disbelief. "I remember! I couldn't draw when you sang. Your voice was so pretty—it made everything feel calm. I used to beg you to sing one more song even though I was supposed to be finishing my sketch!"

Eun-ji grinned, stepping closer. "And you were the one who always complimented me after—'Unnie, your voice is like a warm blanket!' I still remember that. It made me so happy. I kept singing because you looked so peaceful listening."

Eun-seo bounced on her toes. "I kept all the little lyric notes you used to scribble for me when you made up songs on the spot! I have them in my old notebook. I still read them sometimes when I miss that feeling."

The two girls started talking faster, completely absorbed in each other, laughing and reminiscing about those quiet art club moments—Eun-ji humming a few lines of an old song she used to sing, Eun-seo closing her eyes like she did back then, smiling like the music was still wrapping around her.

Everyone else in the room stared in shock.

Ha-yeon blinked. "Wait… you two know each other?"

Hyun-woo raised an eyebrow. "You were in the same club?"

Soo-min laughed softly. "Wow… small world."

Hye-jin smiled. "They're already best friends again."

Ji-yeon chuckled. "Look at them go."

Eun-seo and Eun-ji didn't even notice the others staring—they just kept chatting excitedly.

"You still sing?" Eun-seo asked, eyes sparkling.

"All the time!" Eun-ji said. "I have a whole playlist now. I sing when I'm happy, when I'm sad—everything. You have to hear them! We should sing together again!"

"Yes! Please!" Eun-seo said, clapping her hands. "I've missed your voice so much. It always made me feel safe."

The ice broke completely. The rest of the room relaxed, smiling at how easily the two girls reconnected. The tension in the air softened, and everyone started to feel a little more comfortable.

Min-seok helped Mi-Kyung set the table, carrying plates and bowls, pouring drinks, making sure everyone had what they needed. He pulled out her chair for her, touched her shoulder gently, smiled at her with quiet warmth. Mi-Kyung's kids watched—seeing how gentle he was, how happy their mom looked, how she glowed when he was near.

Before everyone sat down for lunch, Ha-yeon, Eun-seo, and Hyun-woo stood together near the kitchen doorway, watching Min-seok and Mi-Kyung move around each other so naturally.

Hyun-woo leaned close to Ha-yeon, voice low. "Ha-yeon noona… does that look fake to you? The way they're acting? He's pulling out her chair, touching her shoulder, smiling at her like… like they're already a couple."

Ha-yeon watched them for a moment—Min-seok handing Mi-Kyung a glass of water, Mi-Kyung smiling up at him with soft eyes, their hands brushing as she took it.

She sighed quietly. "No… it doesn't look fake. It looks real. Look at her face. She's glowing. She hasn't looked this happy in years. Not since Dad died."

Hyun-woo frowned, glancing at Eun-seo. "But… the age gap. And Tae-joon said—"

"Tae-joon was full of crap," Ha-yeon said firmly, but her voice softened. "Look at her. She's not being manipulated. She's… happy. Truly happy. I feel bad now. We questioned her. We tried to be obstacles when she's finally finding someone who makes her smile like that."

Eun-seo bit her lip, eyes a little wet. "I feel sad too. We were so quick to believe Tae-joon. Mom raised us alone. She never complained. She never dated anyone. And now she has someone who treats her so gently… and we doubted her."

Hyun-woo rubbed the back of his neck, looking guilty. "Yeah… we should apologize. To both of them. We were wrong."

Ha-yeon nodded. "We'll talk to them after lunch. We'll say sorry. And… thank him. For making Mom happy."

Eun-seo smiled a little. "Yeah. He seems nice. And Mom… she looks like she's in love."

Hyun-woo sighed. "Okay. We'll apologize. And we'll give him a chance."

The three of them shared a quiet look—guilt, regret, but also a small hope. They wanted their mom to be happy. And maybe… just maybe… Min-seok really was the right person for her.

They all sat down to eat. The conversation started light—food, school, work, the kids asking Min-seok's sisters about their studies, laughing over Eun-ji and Eun-seo's old art club stories. But the air still felt a little heavy.

Then Mi-Kyung set her chopsticks down. Her hands trembled slightly as she folded them in her lap. Everyone noticed. The table went quiet.

"I need to talk about Min-seok," she said, voice calm at first but already thick with emotion. "I know some of you had doubts. I know Tae-joon said things… and I know you were worried. But I want to clear them up. Because you deserve to know the truth."

She took a shaky breath, eyes already glistening.

"Min-seok saved me. The landlord… he tried to rape me because I couldn't pay the rent on time. He tore my clothes, pinned me down. I was naked, terrified, screaming for help. Min-seok walked in at that moment. He took photos as proof, kicked the man off me, beat him until he couldn't move.

Then he covered me with his coat when I was shaking and crying, held me in his arms all night long so I wouldn't have nightmares. He stayed with me until I fell asleep in his lap. Because of him, that man never came near me again.

Because of him, I don't have to pay rent or salon bills anymore—everything is covered. All the money I earn now is profit. Because of him, I've been able to give you a better life."

Her voice cracked. Tears spilled down her cheeks, but she didn't stop.

"He's been kind, gentle, and caring every single day since. He has no ill intentions. None. He's been looking after his three younger sisters for the last ten years—ever since his father murdered his mother on his own birthday. He lost the most important person in his life, just like I did.

But instead of breaking, he stepped up. He became their mother, their father, their protector. He worked, he cooked, he stayed up through their nightmares, he smiled even when he was dying inside.

Just like I worked hard to raise you three after your father died. We both lost someone we loved… and we both chose to keep going for the people who needed us."

She looked at her kids, tears streaming freely now. "He's not manipulating me. I was the one who confessed to him first. I fell in love with him—because he's good. Because he's kind.

Because he sees me, truly sees me, and loves me without asking for anything in return. He's the best man I've ever known."
