Prologue

"I feel like, if I ran fast enough I could catch it."

We were both sat on the meadow when, her voice broke thecomfortable silence that has settled over us, as it had so many times before. Immediately I stopped pulling the grass from the ground below me, the few pieces crumpled in the palm of my hand. I followed her gaze and saw she was looking towards the sunset. There was a slight breeze in the air, which moved her hair gently, the last rays of the sun making her brown hair appear almost gold.

"Catch what, exactly? I mean, yea, Susan's fast as hell but I wouldn't really refer to her as it." I laughed at my own stupid joke but the look on her face remained the same. Emotionless. How was it possible that a girl like her, a girl who felt things so deeply, could look so…cold?

"No, not Susan," she said gently, looking down at her hands which, I now noticed, were also pulling at the grass, "the sunset."

I frowned, confused, because however I put it, it did not make sense to me. She was not joking; I would have known from the tone of her voice if she was. She was not serious; she knew there is no such thing as 'catching a sunset'. I took that as my cue to make another joke,

"Need me to get you a pair of new running shoes? I mean those you had on for PE this year do not seem to be doing you any favors."

She shook her head, suddenly smiling as she looked at me, before standing up and running, directly at the sunset. I could have sworn I heard her giggle.

"Hey, not fair!" I shouted after her, as I stood up clumsily, running behind, "You know I need a head start!"
