Early the next morning, Chen Ye's eyes slowly opened in the morning sunlight.
He felt a refreshing breeze filling the room, as if heralding a new day full of hope and vitality.
He quickly got up, tidied himself, and set off on his walk to Hell's Kitchen School.
Standing at the school entrance, Chen Ye watched students shuffle through the security checkpoint, their faces listless.
He approached and saw several of the High Table's men, armed with AK-47s, guarding the entrance.
They were currently frisking students, and Chen Ye, curious, joined them.
Several children of different ages had dangerous items confiscated and were now standing at attention awaiting disciplinary action.
Chen Ye took a handgun from one of the children and twirled it in his hand. He asked the white boy in front of him, who looked about 13 years old, "Why are you bringing a gun to class? What's your name, and which class are you in?"
The white boy lifted his head defiantly and said, "Who do you think you are? I'm James, 8th Grade, Class 3. This isn't a real gun, it's just a lighter."
The High Table security guards chuckled at the lie; as killers, they knew it was a real handgun, not a lighter.
Chen Ye also laughed, cocked the pistol, and said to James, "Why don't I try firing it? Let's see if it's fire or a bullet that comes out."
Seeing that Chen Ye might actually shoot, James began shouting at the guards for help. "Help! Someone's trying to kill a student! I'm telling you, this is the Lord of Hell Chen Ye's school. No one can kill freely on his turf!"
Chen Ye found this amusing. He lowered the gun.
James, mistaking this for fear, smugly declared, "Let me tell you, this isn't a place for scum like you to run wild."
Chen Ye slapped him across the face, then kicked him twice.
The boy clutched his head, still defiant, and glared at Chen Ye.
"You didn't even know I was Chen Ye?" Chen Ye asked with a smile.
He turned to the High Table security guards. "Get me a small dark room. From now on, throw any disobedient troublemakers in there for a day or two."
As Chen Ye walked, he pondered whether he had been too lenient with these young men. He'd have to talk to Uncle Kingpin about setting up some small, dark rooms and establishing a few school mottos.
When the students realized the man before them was the school's founder and honorary principal, they fell silent and obediently went to receive their punishments.
Just then, Master Ye approached and said to Chen Ye, "I never expected to finally meet the principal after almost a month of school."
Knowing he was in the wrong, Chen Ye quickly changed the subject. "I've noticed many children walking to school. We need to buy some school buses right away."
"They've already been purchased," Master Ye replied. "We're just waiting for government approval."
Chen Ye pointed to the items seized by the school security. "This is ridiculous. Guns are one thing, but why did they find marijuana and grenades? What kind of child needs to bring a grenade to school for self-defense?"
Chen Ye suspected these items had been supplied by the children's parents. Some were drug dealers, others arms dealers, and they never saw anything wrong with their children bringing these items to school.
The thought left a sour taste in his mouth.
Master Ye seemed unfazed, smiling reassuringly. "These things take time to change. It's already a significant improvement. This place used to be a breeding ground for gang members, where weapons and drugs were sold openly."
"It's already a significant improvement. Now, 90% of the children from Hell's Kitchen attend this school," Master Ye added.
"How many students still don't have dorm rooms? Why do I see so many day students?" Chen Ye asked.
"The ones in dorms are either orphans or from families that can't afford to send them home. About 50% live on campus; the rest go home each day," Master Ye explained.
"Change that now. I want all students to live on campus, only allowed to go home on weekends. If those gangs have a problem, tell them to come find me! Let's see who dares to object," Chen Ye said through gritted teeth.
Chen Ye was determined to change everything. If students were allowed to go home, they would inevitably be corrupted by their gangster parents.
Although Chen Ye had already dealt with the major gangs, he turned a blind eye to the smaller ones as long as they didn't overstep the boundaries.
At that moment, another principal of Hell's Kitchen School, Kingpin, slowly entered through the school gate. Seeing Chen Ye's teeth-gritting expression, Kingpin burst into laughter and patted him on the shoulder. "Who dared to cross our esteemed principal on their very first day? Let's discuss this in my office."
He led Chen Ye to the principal's office. After taking a sip of tea, Chen Ye asked, "What time does school usually end these days?"
Kingpin looked at him in confusion. "We follow the standard schedule—8 AM to 3:30 PM."
Kingpin hadn't expected Chen Ye's first question to be so basic. This schedule was common across the United States. Did Chen Ye have some kind of objection?
Noticing Kingpin's expression, Chen Ye immediately understood his thoughts but didn't explain. Instead, he said, "I think the children's study time is too short. I propose extending the school day to 5 PM, followed by optional evening study sessions from 6 PM to 10 PM."
"After all, they're already starting their education later than their peers. If they don't work harder now, they'll be left behind!"
Chen Ye simply couldn't stand seeing them so relaxed. He remembered his own life in his previous existence, when he had to get to school by 6:30 every morning, start early reading at 7, and stay until 5, only to be kept late by teachers until 6.
Then there were the optional evening study sessions, which meant he didn't get home until 10. Compared to that, the students at Hell's Kitchen School were practically living in paradise.
Chen Ye worried that in their free time, they might pick up bad habits like drug use or playing with dangerous items like handguns.
As for the evening study sessions, Chen Ye was confident that the sight of the security guards' AK-47s would make the students "voluntarily" focus on their studies.
Since the school couldn't manage them effectively, Chen Ye decided to personally build a "prison."
With an iron fist, he would ensure that the students devoted themselves wholeheartedly to their studies.
Kingpin hesitated. "It's your school, after all. You call the shots. But if they finish this late, Vanessa might miss the kids."
Chen Ye replied firmly, "Treat everyone equally! Uncle Kingpin, you wouldn't want your child to fail to get into university, would you? Besides, I think there are many other areas the school needs to be reformed."
Chen Ye and Kingpin spent the entire day in the office discussing their plans for school reform.
Their discussion was interrupted when Master Ye knocked and entered.
He informed Chen Ye that a man named Frank Castle wanted to apply for the position of Dean of Students at the school. He also mentioned that Castle knew Chen Ye was on campus and wished to meet with him.
Chen Ye found the name Frank Castle somewhat familiar but couldn't immediately place him.
However, the prospect of someone applying for the Dean of Students position piqued his interest. After all, many students at this school had parents who were gangsters. One wrong move could lead to a student complaining, resulting in retaliation.
Of course, Chen Ye wouldn't allow such a thing to happen. Still, many people feared being targeted by gangsters. For now, Master Ye was covering the position.
But both Chen Ye and Master Ye knew that Master Ye lacked the necessary deterrence.
Therefore, Chen Ye decided to meet the applicant in person.
