A cunning and satisfied smile played across his face.
This man was none other than Alexander Pierce, the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
"Nick Fury, you've finally met your match," Pierce murmured, his voice dripping with triumph and mockery.
He was thoroughly pleased with how perfectly his plan had unfolded.
He had initially harbored some reservations about Chen Ye and Nick Fury's capabilities, but now it seemed they were merely pawns in his game, easily manipulated by his schemes.
He relished the success of his scheme, and the sight of his arch-nemesis, Nick Fury, seething with frustration brought him immense satisfaction.
Pierce had been wary of Chen Ye and Nick Fury's abilities, but he never imagined that a simple corpse would be enough to pit them against each other.
Although Iron Man's intervention introduced an unexpected variable, it only served to further inflame the conflict between Chen Ye and S.H.I.E.L.D.
He was immensely proud of his own intelligence and abilities, viewing both Chen Ye and Nick Fury as mere puppets in his grand scheme.
"What Lord of Hell Chen Ye, what Nick Fury—they're nothing but puppets!" Pierce threw his head back and laughed maniacally.
Crossbones stepped forward and flattered him, "Congratulations, Director. After tomorrow, S.H.I.E.L.D. will be under your command."
Crossbones was fully aware of Pierce's plan. He knew that once this leverage was in Hydra's hands, Nick Fury would be forced to resign as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
He also understood that S.H.I.E.L.D. had already suffered severe blows under Fury's leadership, and this was the perfect opportunity for Pierce to seize control.
Pierce seemed to relish the flattery, nodding slightly, his eyes gleaming with ambition and greed.
He could already envision the glorious spectacle of himself commanding S.H.I.E.L.D. and spreading their Hydra influence across the globe.
Suddenly, Pierce frowned as if remembering something. "Were any of our agents injured in the battle?"
Even though he had immediately ordered his men to avoid the battle between Iron Man and Captain America, Pierce couldn't fully relax.
He worried that innocent Hydra agents might be killed or injured in the conflict—after all, they were crucial pieces in his plan to seize control of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Seeing Pierce's concern, Crossbones quickly responded, "Director, rest assured. Thanks to your brilliant guidance, all our agents successfully completed their missions without a single casualty. They know you care about them and will be eternally grateful."
A satisfied smile spread across Pierce's face. He nodded and said, "Since we lost quite a few agents today, and these agents have been with us for so many years, it's time to shuffle the deck. I'll be assigning them to key positions soon."
Before Nick Fury's departure, several critical departments had been filled with Fury loyalists, making it difficult for Hydra to infiltrate. This incident presented the perfect opportunity to quickly gain complete control of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Soon, S.H.I.E.L.D. would become their faction's private garden.
And they would gain even greater influence within Hydra!
Hearing Pierce's words, Crossbones' heart swelled with excitement. He bowed deeply to Pierce and said gratefully, "On behalf of all the agents, I thank you, Director."
Pierce waved his hand, his face radiant with confidence and triumph. He took a deep breath and declared loudly, "All of this is for Hydra! Hail Hydra!"
Crossbones immediately responded, "Hail Hydra!" His voice rang with loyalty and fanaticism.
Both Crossbones and Pierce belonged to the same faction within Hydra. They could already envision their faction slowly growing stronger within the organization.
Pierce's ambition didn't stop there. He planned to infiltrate every corner of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Hydra's influence, thereby achieving complete control over the entire organization.
He knew this would require time and patience, but he was confident he could achieve this goal.
He believed that under Hydra's banner, their faction would grow stronger and more glorious.
At this critical juncture, Crossbones proposed a carefully considered strategy to Pierce: "I've been observing the Avengers. I think we should shift our focus to them and try to recruit some of their members. If we succeed, we might be able to turn them into our pawns, or even gain control of the entire Avengers team."
A glint of cunning flashed in Pierce's eyes.
He knew that if they could truly control a group of superheroes, any goal would become effortlessly achievable.
He even began to imagine that if everything went according to plan, he might actually become the leader of Hydra, realizing his long-held ambition.
Pierce had always believed his abilities and intelligence were on par with anyone's, which was why he had risen to his current position.
He recalled that Nick Fury had once had a similar idea and had successfully assembled the Avengers.
Pierce was firmly convinced that, with the right strategy, he could achieve the same.
He began to carefully consider the feasibility of his plan.
He knew that Hawkeye and Black Widow were Nick Fury's trusted confidants, making them nearly impossible to win over. Moreover, they were just ordinary humans with little intrinsic value.
Captain America was a staunch warrior for justice, his principles unwavering and unyielding. While he couldn't be swayed, he could be manipulated—today's events were the perfect example. A mere useless corpse had been used to turn Captain America into a pawn, causing Nick Fury immense trouble.
However, Pierce noticed the Fantastic Four.
They had recently joined the Avengers and hadn't yet fully integrated into the team. Furthermore, their loyalty to Nick Fury was shallow; they had joined the Avengers primarily for S.H.I.E.L.D.'s resources and influence.
Pierce saw this as a golden opportunity. He decided to try to win over the Fantastic Four and make them his pawns.
He believed that if he promised to make Mister Fantastic Reed the leader of the Avengers, he might be able to sway them.
So, Pierce instructed Crossbones, "Go invite the Fantastic Four. Tell them I have something important to discuss."
His eyes burned with confidence and determination, as if he already saw himself controlling the future of the Avengers.
