Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: Falling Apart

Sombravida escorted Nel back to Jekain's territory within the Central Forest.

When they arrived at the stronghold clearing, Jekain and his three Adjuchas subordinates were still at the Central Tree and had not yet returned. Only a low-ranking Adjuchas remained behind to assist Sombravida.

With Yislut — the forest's primary sensory Hollow — dead, no one currently possessed the capability to monitor reiatsu activity across the entire Central Forest.

Even if other Hollows possessed detection abilities, none could replace him immediately.

Power alone was insufficient.

Trust took time.

In a volatile power structure, Gatmont could not elevate a replacement overnight — not while he was still hunting the killer.

That hesitation bought Sombravida precious time.

Return of the Lords

Several hours later, Jekain returned with his subordinates.

"My lord, I have returned."

He knelt immediately.

His three subordinates exchanged brief glances, then followed suit, kneeling alongside him. The remaining Adjuchas also lowered themselves.

They now understood:

This outsider was someone their lord served.

Earlier resentment vanished the moment Sombravida eliminated Yislut — a feat none of them could accomplish.

In their eyes, hierarchy had clarified itself:

their lord

their lord's superior

their lord's superior's ally

All were stronger than themselves.

Rebellion was unthinkable.

Sombravida smiled faintly.

"Well? Report."

"Gatmont is furious," Jekain replied.

"He found no trace of reiatsu within the Central Tree. Nothing."

He lowered his head slightly.

"My king… I still do not understand how you accomplished this."

Sombravida sat upon a fallen trunk.

"Stealth. Disguise. Timing."

"My abilities are suited to assassination. Without extraordinary sensory support, he will need time to identify me."

Jekain's eyes gleamed beneath his mask.

"In the short term, Gatmont cannot monitor reiatsu across the forest. That benefits us greatly."

Strategic Consolidation

"What next, my lord?" Jekain asked.

Sombravida's voice remained calm.

"Consolidate forces. Cultivate additional Adjuchas. Begin eroding the core power structure."

"Strengthen patrols."

"After stabilization, expand into neighboring territories. Seize resources."

"If conflict arises, avoid direct engagement. Withdraw. Allow enemies to enter our territory… then eliminate them."

"Yes, my king."

Jekain paused.

"We can also train Gillian groups within our territory. While targeting neighboring lords, we deploy them to weaken territories and create opportunities."

Sombravida nodded.

"Acceptable."

"Compile a list of lord abilities. We begin with those unwilling to cooperate and those weakly loyal to Gatmont."

Jekain's eyes sharpened.

"You intend to use other factions against them… understood."

He and his men withdrew to begin preparations.

Seeds of a New Order

When the others departed, Nel approached.

"Lord Sombravida… are we taking over this forest?"

Sombravida's eyes narrowed.

"This is the first step of our revenge."

His reiatsu leaked slightly, heavy and cold.

"When this forest reshuffles, the fallen will become our nourishment."

"Those who submit will become the foundation of our future war."

"Within three years… we control the Central Forest."

Nel nodded eagerly.

Her evolution had subtly altered her temperament. Violence was no longer repulsive — it was survival.

Reshaping the Territory

Sombravida stood.

"We build infrastructure."

"We must control Gillian flow and resource paths."

Hueco Mundo did not function through random hunting alone.

Gillian wandered from every direction. Without guidance, potential Adjuchas either perished or evolved unseen.

This prevented structured power growth.

Sombravida intended to change that.

Territory Reorganization

Objectives:

block unnecessary pathways

• guide Gillians into gathering zones

• create open absorption fields for evolution

• allow Adjuchas to feed efficiently

• monitor emerging sentient Hollows

Sentient Gillians could be identified early.

Recruited early.

Controlled after evolution.

Building the Stronghold

The core territory required a defensible base.

Unlike the Central Tree — symbolic but exposed — Sombravida preferred terrain advantage and layered defense.

One subordinate possessed earth-manipulation abilities. Using stone and petrified timber, he began constructing a fortress stronghold.

Within weeks, a defensible compound began to rise from the forest floor.

Gatmont's Paranoia

Meanwhile, Yislut's death pushed Grand Lord Gatmont toward instability.

Without his sensory partner, he suspected everyone.

Trust eroded.

Command cohesion fractured.

This created the opening Sombravida needed.

Silent Assassinations

With intelligence supplied by Jekain, Sombravida began contacting suspicious lords.

Jekain handled diplomacy.

Sombravida handled elimination.

Targets:

Gatmont loyalists

resistant lords

unstable rivals

Using stealth, concealment, and rapid execution, Sombravida eliminated them without leaving reiatsu traces.

Scenes were manipulated.

Blame redirected.

Distrust multiplied.

Collapse of Unity

As assassinations mounted:

suspicion spread

alliances fractured

lords armed against one another

Gatmont's authority weakened

Other lords, sensing opportunity, began consolidating power.

Within one year:

The original hierarchy shattered.

From thirty-six lords emerged five factions:

Gatmont's core loyalists

reformist coalition

opportunist expansionists

isolationist territories

Sombravida's hidden faction

Civil war loomed.

The Hidden Catalyst

Sombravida remained invisible.

Not because he hid perfectly…

…but because anyone who discovered him either submitted —

or disappeared.

One Year Later

After more than a year:

Sombravida had fully embedded himself within the forest structure.

His hidden faction now controlled:

twelve Adjuchas (including Nel & Jekain)

two subordinate lord territories

organized Gillian evolution zones

Other factions possessed thirty to forty Adjuchas each.

Open independence would make Sombravida an immediate target.

Patience remained essential.

The Coming Purge

Jekain entered the stronghold chamber.

"My king, Gatmont has ordered the extermination of reformists."

"They have invited us again. Their tone grows more forceful."

"Do we join them?"

Sombravida leaned back on his stone seat.

Nel stretched lazily beside him.

"Not yet."

"The reformists are near collapse. Joining them now places us directly against Gatmont."

Jekain continued:

"The new sensory Hollow detected your reiatsu half a month ago. Gatmont suspects us."

"That is suspicion — not proof," Sombravida replied calmly.

"As long as he lacks certainty, we remain useful pawns."

He leaned forward slightly.

"Orders:"

Adjuchas enter territorial alert status

• sentient Gillians assist defense

• use designated encampments as defensive cores

• issue warnings at first disturbance

• minimize contact with external factions

He continued:

"If reformists attempt coercion: refuse politely."

"If pressure escalates: signal other factions for 'support.' Remain secluded."

"If they attempt force… we make an example."

"As for Gatmont's suspicion…"

Sombravida's eyes gleamed.

"…we will give him something else to suspect."

"Yes, my king."

The storm was coming.

And Sombravida intended to be the one who decided where lightning struck.
