He walked out of the hospital without knowing he was walking.
That was the only way to describe it afterward, when he tried to reconstruct the sequence of it. His body had simply made a decision that his mind had not yet caught up to, feet moving, doors opening, the bright cold air of the morning hitting him in the face without warning because he had not remembered that there was weather outside, that there was an outside, that the world continued to exist in its ordinary and indifferent way while something inside him was in the process of being rearranged from the foundation up.
