As expected, Hawkeye made the same judgment Qin Xiao had anticipated. After carefully weighing the balance of power, he decisively chose to take Dr. Selvig and the device activating the Tesseract straight to Africa.
What Loki said made sense—only after summoning the Chitauri army and when their internal defenses were empty would it be the best time to mount a rescue operation.
So Hawkeye brought Dr. Selvig directly to Africa.
Eastern Africa's Wakanda was undoubtedly the best choice. It appeared poor and backward, with no major city clusters, making it ideal for quickly assembling forces.
In addition, there were a few small neighboring countries that could be conquered and used as temporary bases, and it wasn't far from the coastline.
Three hours earlier.
At 2:10 AM New York time, it was 9:10 AM Wakanda time. (This reference follows the time difference between Addis Ababa, also in East Africa, and New York. Wakanda is fictional but located in East Africa in the Marvel universe.)
Hawkeye drove an off-road pickup truck into the African savannah of Wakanda.
Dr. Selvig sat beside him, while the Tesseract was stored in a special material containment case.
Along the way, Selvig had asked why Hawkeye chose Africa.
Hawkeye replied that a powerful weapon could destroy a planet instantly—but conquering it was a long-term process.
Africa was poor and underdeveloped, yet rich in resources. What better place was there to occupy first?
Selvig nodded repeatedly in agreement.
Of course, they were detected upon entering Wakanda.
Although Wakanda appeared backward on the surface, it was actually an open nation. While it wasn't a tourist hotspot, occasional self-driving travelers or backpackers would still come to watch the sunrise or sunset over the savannah.
In addition, the Tesseract had been sealed inside a special shielding case, preventing detection.
Thus, the two were able to move freely deep into Wakanda's grasslands.
By the time they reached here, they were already less than two kilometers from the true Wakandan capital.
When they began assembling the device, the Wakandan royal guard observing from the shadows even assumed they were setting up a telescope to stargaze at night.
An hour later, the Tesseract was taken out.
In the royal guard's monitoring room, alarms blared wildly.
The energy contained within the Tesseract appeared, in Wakanda's sensors, to be an energy source comparable to the sun itself.
The automated security system immediately classified it as a maximum-level threat.
Equipment buried beneath the savannah began to activate automatically.
Blue energy flowed between vibranium-based structures underground.
Soon, a massive energy shield rose into the sky, covering a two-kilometer radius, isolating both the outside world and the savannah from the capital.
After a flash of blue light, the fully formed barrier became semi-transparent. As long as it was not attacked, it was nearly invisible.
From dozens of meters underground to thousands of meters in the air, the entire region was enclosed within Wakanda's energy shield.
"What is this? What's happening? Is this a high-density energy barrier? Are you sure we're in Africa? Or is this some alien ruin?"
Dr. Selvig stared at the suddenly appearing shield in disbelief.
Hawkeye's eyes also showed shock, but compared to Selvig, he remained much calmer.
After a brief pause, he said:
"Whatever it is, we'd better speed things up."
Inside the Wakandan royal palace, King T'Chaka was speaking with his son, the new Black Panther.
"T'Challa, I am very proud that you have become Wakanda's strongest warrior and inherited the title of Black Panther."
"But if you want to become a good king, the title of Black Panther alone is far from enough…"
The aging king was preparing to gradually hand over authority. Under his supervision, he intended to temper his son for a few more years before fully stepping down.
Thus, every morning he had T'Challa join him for breakfast and discuss matters of the kingdom.
Today was no exception. After discussing state affairs, the king intended to talk more about father-son matters.
Unfortunately, they were interrupted by the hurried entrance of the royal guard captain.
"Your Majesty! Prince!"
The captain Okoye bowed slightly in greeting.
"Okoye, it's rare to see you this unsettled. What is happening outside?" the king asked calmly with a smile.
"Two outsiders have entered the savannah. At first, we thought they were tourists, but they have set up a device and revealed an extraordinary energy source. Our sensors cannot determine its upper limit!"
Okoye pressed a device on her vibranium bracelet, projecting surveillance footage.
It showed Hawkeye and Dr. Selvig assembling the device around the Tesseract.
"The system has classified it as a maximum-level security incident and activated the energy shield to isolate the area."
"Although we don't know what they are trying to do, I suggest we either stop them immediately—or eliminate them on the spot."
Okoye said expressionlessly.
King T'Chaka, having experienced countless storms in his life, did not panic. Instead, he used the situation as a test for his son.
"T'Challa, what do you think we should do in response to this unknown threat?"
"The energy shield has already been exposed, so there is no need to keep hiding," T'Challa replied. "We don't know their intentions yet. I suggest we send people to capture them first and question them before deciding what to do."
The king nodded approvingly.
"Very good, my child. As a king, you must never easily take lives. However, remember—you must also not handle everything yourself. The king bears the responsibility for all Wakandans. Learn to delegate tasks properly."
He then turned to Okoye:
"Bring them and the object back first. After we understand the situation…"
Before he could finish—
On the screen, the Tesseract began emitting blue energy. A beam of light shot into the sky.
A massive wormhole opened hundreds of meters above.
Okoye quickly switched camera feeds, revealing a view of the sky.
On the other side of the wormhole was outer space—and a swarm of soldiers riding single-person flying craft.
"Alien invasion?"
King T'Chaka finally lost his calm.
"Okoye! Assemble all forces immediately and deploy them!"
"T'Challa, go to the scene and meet Okoye outside the shield—no, I'll go with you personally!"
The king stood up abruptly, rushing out in urgency.
