Chapter 26 - Chapter 25: The fight that shook Black Hollow

The next morning, Jay walked into the courtyard with her friends, trying to pretend everything was normal.

It wasn't.

Because Keifer was already there.

Waiting.

Arms crossed. Jaw tight. Eyes locked on her like she was the only person in the world.

Jay froze. "Oh no."

Bella whispered, "Oh YES."

Adrian whispered, "This is going to be violent."

Daniel whispered, "I'm leaving."

Mila whispered, "Good luck."

Jay took one step forward.

Keifer took three.

"Jay," he said, voice low, "we need to talk."

Jay crossed her arms. "No. We don't."

"Yes," he said, stepping closer, "we do."

"No," she repeated, stepping back, "we don't."

Students began to gather.

Crimson Oaths on one side. Nightthorns on the other. Aiden somewhere in the middle, already stressed.

The courtyard filled fast.

Whispers spread like wildfire.

"Jayfer fight?" "Are they breaking up?" "They're not even dating!" "BUT THEY SHOULD BE!"

Jay glared at Keifer. "Stop following me everywhere!"

"I'm not following you," he said calmly. "I'm watching you."

"THAT'S THE SAME THING!"

"No," he said, stepping closer again, "it's not."

Jay stepped back. "You're impossible!"

"You're reckless," he shot back.

"I WAS GETTING WATER!"

"You could've died."

"I DIDN'T!"

"You could've."

Jay's face heated. "WHY DO YOU CARE SO MUCH?!"

The crowd gasped.

Keifer didn't hesitate.

"Because it's you."

Jay's heart tripped over itself.

Crimson Oaths screamed. Nightthorns froze. Aiden looked like he wanted to disappear.

Jay shook her head, flustered. "You can't just—just—say things like that!"

Keifer stepped closer again.

Jay stepped back again.

He stepped forward.

She stepped back.

Forward.

Back.

Forward.

Back—

Until her back hit the wall behind her.

The entire courtyard went silent.

Jay's breath caught.

Keifer was inches away.

Too close. Too intense. Too everything.

"Jay," he said softly, "stop running from me."

"I'm not—running," she whispered, even though she definitely was.

"You are."

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'M NOT!"

He leaned in just a little, eyes locked on hers. "Then look at me."

She did.

Big mistake.

Her heart exploded.

The courtyard erupted.

"JAYFER!!" "THEY'RE SO CLOSE—" "KISS! KISS! KISS!" "OH MY GOD—" "AIDEN DON'T LOOK—" "THE PRESIDENT IS IN LOVE—" "THIS IS BETTER THAN TV—"

Jay's face turned red. "BACK UP!"

Keifer didn't move.

"Keifer—"

"Jay."

"Keifer—!"

"Jay."

Their faces were so close the air between them felt electric.

The whole school held its breath.

Crimson Oaths leaned forward. Nightthorns leaned forward. Aiden covered his eyes. Bella was already crying. Adrian was filming with his imaginary camera. Daniel whispered, "This is insane."

Keifer's voice dropped to a whisper only she could hear.

"I'm not letting you walk away from me."

Jay's heart stopped.

The courtyard screamed.

But before anything could happen—

before the moment could cross the line—

before the entire school fainted—

Keifer leaned in to give Jay some time to think but she didn't move an inch. So Keifer bent down and kissed her.

KISSED. HER.

LIP- ON - LIP

IN FRONT OF WHOLE SCHOOL.

For exactly half a second—

the world stopped.

Then—

CHAOS.

The courtyard EXPLODED.

"OH MY GOD HE DID IT—""THEY KISSED—""JAYFER IS REAL—""I JUST WITNESSED HISTORY—""SOMEONE CHECK AIDEN—""I'M ASCENDING—""THIS IS BETTER THAN THE PROM INCIDENT—"

Crimson Oaths were screaming like they'd just won a championship.

Nightthorns were losing their minds—half cheering, half stunned, half already planning fan edits.

Aiden had fully turned around, hands over his ears."I DID NOT CONSENT TO THIS INFORMATION—"

Bella burst into actual tears."I KNEW IT," she sobbed. "I KNEW IT—"

Adrian wiped an imaginary lens."And that," he said solemnly, "was cinema."

Daniel stared into the distance."This school is cursed."

Someone yelled, "PUT IT ON THE ANNOUNCEMENTS BOARD—"Someone else yelled, "WE WERE HERE—"Someone definitely fainted. No one checked who.

And in the middle of it all—

Jay and Keifer.

Still close. Still frozen.

Keifer pulled back just barely, like he'd crossed a line and knew it—but didn't regret it for a single second.

Jay's brain had completely shut down.

Her face was on fire. Her heart was doing parkour. Her hands were clenched in his jacket like they belonged there.

The screaming blurred into noise.

She finally found her voice.

"…You—" she whispered, absolutely wrecked. "You just—"

"I know," Keifer said quietly.

"You kissed me."

"Yes."

"In front of everyone."

"Yes."

"You didn't even—"

"I couldn't wait anymore."

That did it.

Jay shoved him—hard enough to make a point, not hard enough to make space.

"You are insane," she hissed.

Keifer smiled.

Not a smirk.

A real one.

"I know."

The crowd lost it again.

"SAY YES—""ARE THEY DATING NOW—""SOMEONE UPDATE THE SCHOOL WIKI—""I'M CALLING MY MOM—"

Jay covered her face with both hands.

"This is a nightmare."

Keifer leaned in, just enough for her to hear.

"You kissed me back."

She froze.

Slowly lowered her hands.

"…I did not."

"You did," he said gently. "For half a second."

Her mouth opened.

Closed.

She groaned. "I hate you."

He tilted his head. "Liar."

She shoved him again. "I'm leaving."

"Together?" he asked.

She glared.

The entire courtyard held its breath.

"…Don't push it," she muttered.

Keifer fell into step beside her anyway.

The cheers followed them all the way out.

And by lunch—

the school was never the same.
