Chapter 76 - Chapter 75: The Parents Meet

The letter arrived on a Tuesday.

Jay was eating breakfast when an official-looking envelope landed in front of her. Not Black Hollow stationery. Normal paper. Normal handwriting.

Her mother's handwriting.

Dear Jay,

Your father and I are so proud of you! We've heard so much about this school and your friends and especially about a certain young man named Keifer. We're coming to visit! Next weekend. Can't wait to meet everyone!

Love, Mom

Jay stared at the letter. Her soul left her body.

"No," she whispered. "No, no, no."

Mila grabbed the letter. Read it. Gasped.

"Your parents are COMING?"

"My parents are coming."

"To BLACK HOLLOW?"

"Apparently."

"To meet KEIFER?"

Jay buried her face in her hands. "I'm going to die."

Across campus, Keifer received a similar letter.

Not from Jay's parents. From his own.

Keifer,

We've received word that you're now Principal of that school. Impressive. We'll be visiting next weekend to see this... situation for ourselves. Ensure everything is presentable.

Your father

Keifer read it twice. His face didn't change.

But the coffee cup in his hand cracked.

Lyra, who had somehow appeared in his office, gasped. "Was that from YOUR parents?"

"Yes."

"They're coming HERE?"

"Yes."

"To meet JAY?"

"Yes."

Lyra's face went through several expressions: shock, concern, and finally, pure delight.

"This is going to be AMAZING."

The next week was chaos.

Jay cleaned everything. Panicked about everything. Changed outfits seventeen times.

"What do parents even WANT?" she asked Mila desperately.

"Parents want to see you happy."

"I AM happy."

"Then show them that."

"But what if they don't like him?"

Mila laughed. "Jay. Everyone likes Keifer. He's the Principal. He's hot. He's devoted to you. Your parents will love him."

"You don't know my parents. They're LOUD. They're WARM. They HUG."

"And Keifer is cold and controlled and doesn't hug."

"EXACTLY."

Mila patted her arm. "It'll be fine."

Keifer, meanwhile, was dealing with his own crisis.

His parents were coming. His cold, distant, never-satisfied parents. Who had never approved of anything he'd done.

"They're going to hate her," he told Jay flatly.

"No they won't."

"They hate everyone."

"They won't hate ME."

"You don't know them."

"And you don't know ME." She grabbed his hands. "I'm lovable. Everyone loves me."

"Lyra loves you."

"Lyra LOVES me. Adrian respects me. Bella sketches me. Mila mothers me. Daniel tolerates me. That's basically everyone."

Keifer almost smiled. "My parents are different."

"Then we'll be different together."

He pulled her close. "I love you."

"I love you too. Now stop worrying. We've got this."

The day arrived.

Jay's parents came first.

They burst through the gates like a force of nature. Jay's mom—warm, round, with Jay's exact smile—saw her daughter and screamed.

"JAY!"

"MOM!"

They collided in a hug that would have crushed a normal person. Jay's dad joined in, wrapping both of them in his big arms.

"My baby," he rumbled. "We missed you so much."

"I missed you too, Dad."

They pulled back. Looked at her. Beamed.

"Now," her mom said, eyes sparkling, "where's this boyfriend we've heard so much about?"

Keifer stepped forward. Calm. Controlled. Perfect posture.

"Mr. and Mrs. Mariano," he said. "I'm Keifer Watson. It's an honor to meet you."

Jay's mom stared at him. Then at Jay. Then back at him.

Then she grabbed him and hugged him.

Keifer froze. Arms stuck out. Face completely blank.

Jay's mom didn't notice. She was too busy squeezing.

"You're even handsomer than the photos! And so tall! And POLITE!" She pulled back, beaming. "I love him already."

Jay's dad shook Keifer's hand. Firm. Appraising.

"Take care of my daughter," he said.

"Always, sir."

"Good answer."

Keifer's parents arrived an hour later.

The difference was immediate.

Mr. Watson was tall, cold, dressed in perfect black. He looked at Black Hollow like it was beneath him. Mrs. Watson was beautiful, distant, wearing an expression that said "I'm bored already."

"Keifer," Mr. Watson said. No hug. No warmth. Just acknowledgment.

"Father. Mother."

"You've done well for yourself. Principal." It sounded like an accusation.

"I try."

"And this is the girl?" Mrs. Watson's eyes flicked to Jay. Looked her up and down.

Jay stepped forward. Smiled. "I'm Jay Mariano. It's nice to meet you."

Mrs. Watson said nothing. Just nodded slightly.

Jay's smile tightened. "Lovely weather we're having."

"Is it?" Mrs. Watson looked at the sky like she'd never noticed it before.

Keifer's hand found Jay's. Squeezed once.

Jay squeezed back. I'm okay.

The tour was awkward.

Jay's parents loved everything. The creepy hallways. The whispering ghosts. The haunted courtyard.

"This is AMAZING," Jay's mom kept saying. "So much CHARACTER."

Keifer's parents said nothing. Just walked. Judged.

At lunch, the contrast was extreme.

Jay's parents sat close, laughing, asking questions, hugging everyone. Lyra was in heaven. Adrian got a hug. Bella got a hug. Even Daniel got a hug (he didn't know what to do with it).

Keifer's parents sat apart. Eating little. Saying less.

Mr. Watson finally spoke. "So. Jay. What are your plans after this school?"

Jay blinked. "Plans?"

"Career. Future. Ambition."

"I... haven't decided yet."

"I see." His tone said "how disappointing."

Jay's mom jumped in. "She's young! She has time! When I was her age, I didn't know anything."

"Clearly," Mrs. Watson murmured.

The table went silent.

Jay's dad set down his fork. Looked at Mrs. Watson.

"Excuse me?"

"I said nothing."

"Sounded like something."

Mrs. Watson smiled. Cold. "I'm sure I don't know what you mean."

Jay's mom put a hand on her husband's arm. "Honey. Not here."

Jay looked at Keifer. He looked at her. His jaw was tight.

This was going badly.

After lunch, Jay found Keifer alone in the courtyard.

"Hey," she said softly.

He didn't turn. "I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"Them. My parents. They're... impossible."

"They're your parents."

"They're cold. Distant. Judgmental. Everything you're not."

She came to stand beside him. "They're also the reason you exist. So I have to thank them for that."

He looked at her. "How are you so calm?"

"Because I've been watching your mom all day. And you know what I see?"

"What?"

"Someone who's scared. Someone who doesn't know how to love openly. Someone who wishes she could but doesn't know how."

Keifer stared at her.

"She's you," Jay continued quietly. "Before me. Before everything. She's who you could have become."

"But I didn't."

"No. You didn't. Because you chose different. You chose to feel. To love. To be vulnerable." She took his hand. "That's not her fault. That's her loss. But it's my gain."

He pulled her close. Held her tight.

"I love you," he whispered.

"I love you too."

"Thank you. For seeing her. For seeing me."

"Always."

That evening, something shifted.

Jay's mom cornered Mrs. Watson in the common room. Alone.

"Can we talk?"

Mrs. Watson looked surprised. "About what?"

"About our kids. About us. About this."

Jay's mom sat across from her. Open. Warm.

"I know you love your son," she said quietly. "I can see it. In the way you watch him. The way you notice everything."

Mrs. Watson said nothing.

"I also know you don't know how to show it. And that's okay. Not everyone grows up with love like mine did."

Mrs. Watson's eyes flickered.

"But let me tell you something about Jay. She's the best thing in my life. She's loud and messy and stubborn and perfect. And your son? He sees that. He LOVES that. He makes her happy. Happier than I've ever seen her."

Mrs. Watson's mask cracked. Just slightly.

"So here's my offer," Jay's mom continued. "We don't have to be friends. We don't have to be family. But let's at least be civil. For them. For our kids. Because they love each other. And that's worth more than pride or coldness or anything else."

Long silence.

Then Mrs. Watson spoke. Quiet. Barely audible.

"I don't know how."

Jay's mom smiled. Warm. "That's okay. I'll teach you."

The next morning, things were different.

Mrs. Watson approached Jay. Stiff. Awkward.

"Jay."

"Yes?"

"I... wanted to say..." She struggled. "You make my son happy. I see that now. Thank you."

Jay's heart melted. "Thank you, Mrs. Watson."

"Call me... Victoria." She almost smiled. "If you want."

Jay beamed. "Victoria."

Mr. Watson, watching from across the room, nodded once at Keifer. That was it. That was everything.

Keifer's eyes burned. He looked away.

Jay's dad clapped him on the shoulder. "You did good, son."

"I didn't do anything."

"You kept her. That's everything."

The parents left that afternoon.

Hugs from Jay's family. Stiff nods from Keifer's. But something had changed. Something had shifted.

Jay and Keifer stood at the gates, watching them go.

"That was intense," Jay said.

"That was your mom."

"She's something."

"She's everything." He looked at her. "Like you."

She smiled. "Smooth."

"I try."

They walked back to school together. Hand in hand.

Their friends were waiting in the common room.

Lyra had a new whiteboard.
