Chapter 253 - The Dark Forest

The forest that opened before them was no mere cluster of trees—it was a colossal organism that breathed, stalked, and judged every step they took. Twisted trunks rose like the pillars of a forbidden temple, draped in faintly glowing lichen, while a purple mist slithered between the roots, brushing against their legs as if tasting them.

The air was thick with moisture, mana, and a metallic scent—like old blood mixed with wet earth. This was no natural woodland. It was the breath of something ancient, powerful… and deeply hostile.

The humans moved forward with hesitant steps. Every crack beneath their boots—branches, leaves, tiny bones—sent shivers through them. More than one stumbled over roots that seemed to shift ever so slightly at their touch, like fingers trying to grasp them.

Adela led the way atop her white tiger, whose presence shone like a beacon of courage in the darkness. The great feline advanced without fear, its fur faintly glowing where the mist brushed it, its ice-blue eyes scanning every shadow. Its mere posture held the group together.

Behind her, Emily and Isabella rode Thunder, Lusian's magical beast. The horse's hooves left brief blue sparks that faded quickly into the damp ground. Thunder breathed heavily, alert, ears twitching like magical antennae. Emily leaned forward to calm him, while Isabella clung tightly, trying to hide the tremor in her hands.

Lusian and Elizabeth brought up the rear.

Lusian's hand rested on the hilt of his sword, his golden eyes adjusting effortlessly to the near-total darkness. Elizabeth stayed half a step beside him, watchful, every muscle tense.

At the flank, Dayana the vampire moved near Adela. Her head tilted slightly from side to side, as if listening to conversations no one else could hear. She felt the pulses, breaths, and movements of hidden creatures. Her crimson eyes caught shapes the humans couldn't even imagine: insects the size of an arm crawling over trunks, luminous serpents coiling around branches, fungi pulsing like beating hearts, birds whose songs sounded like inverted notes.

The savanna lingered behind them like a warm, distant memory.

Here, there was no horizon. No wind.No space to run.

Only a suffocating mass of roots, wood, mist, and danger.

"Watch the ground," Lusian warned in a low voice.

Too late.

One of the younger humans cried out as something coiled around his ankle. A root—thin as a human arm—had moved on its own. Adela turned instantly; the tiger let out a deep, reverberating growl. The root released him, sliding back into the earth like a massive worm.

The humans did not speak again.

The forest was listening.

A pair of red eyes appeared high above, among the branches, watching without moving. Then another. And another. Feline creatures of shadow and scale, perfectly still except for their tails, swaying slowly like pendulums of death.

"Keep moving," Lusian said, his voice tightly controlled. "Don't provoke them."

The humans swallowed hard and kept their eyes down.

Suddenly, a group of dark deer—tall, with twisted antlers and liquid eyes reflecting the mist—darted past Adela. Their hooves made no sound. When they vanished, they left behind a trail of tiny lights, like drifting magic dust.

Elizabeth murmured, "This place is worse than I imagined."

"It's an ancient forest," Dayana replied, a faint, almost amused smile on her lips. "It's… home."

Kara grimaced."I've never seen a forest this dark."

"Switch," Lusian said. "I'll lead. The darkness favors me."

"Can you actually see anything?" Aren whispered.

"I have good eyes," Lusian replied with a slight smile.

Aren, trailing behind, couldn't understand how they could remain so calm while she—and everyone from her community—was paralyzed with fear.

They had only gone a few more steps when the sound reached them.

Clang.Clang.Clang.

Steel striking steel.Muffled cries. The whisper of leaves sliced by swift blades.

Lusian raised his hand. The entire group froze, as if the forest itself had turned them to stone.

"Dark Elves," he whispered. "They're fighting each other. But why… here?"

Emily tightened her grip on the reins. Isabella swallowed hard.Kara drew her sword an inch from its sheath. The humans shrank back, trembling.

Dayana tilted her head, inhaling deeply.

"Their blood… it has a strong scent. I'd like to—"

"Don't even think about it," Lusian cut in without looking at her.

The forest around them seemed to lean closer, curious about what they would choose.

Fight.Flee.Intervene.Die.

Lusian did not hesitate.

"We don't move," he ordered. "Not until we understand what's happening."

And so, in the heart of the Dark Forest—surrounded by unseen creatures, living magic, and death lurking just beyond sight—the human group held its breath, while the echo of elven battle spread through the undergrowth like a warning:

The war between races was closer than ever.
