Where is Jango Fett right now?
Max Vizsla knew half the answerβhe knew Jango Fett was currently on Kamino (star chart coordinates: S-15), but where Kamino actually wasβ¦ that genuinely left him at a loss.
A year ago, Darth Tyranus found Jango Fett on a moon of Bogden (star chart coordinates: M-8) and offered him an extremely tempting proposal: become the genetic template and combat instructor for the future Grand Army of the Republic. The pay would be considerable.
A job with no danger, huge compensation, andβonce declassifiedβprestigious social standing. The drifting Mandalorian bounty hunter accepted without hesitation.
Jango Fett readily took Tyranus's commission, but he also added one extra condition: he wanted a clone with no modifications. Unlike the mass-produced copies, this clone would not receive accelerated growth or behavioral conditioning. It would be a complete Jango duplicate.
The condition wasn't excessive, and Darth Tyranus agreed just as readily.
At this point in time, Jango Fett was in Tipoca City on Kamino, feeding and changing diapers for his one-year-old little cloneβBoba Fett.
And here's the problem: for the sake of secrecy, before fully leaving the Jedi Order, Count Dooku (Darth Tyranus) used his high-level authority to erase all records of Kamino, a remote Outer Rim world. Kamino "disappeared" from the galaxy.
Anything that passes leaves traces. Finding Kamino would certainly not be easyβbut for Max Vizsla it also wasn't truly the hard part. The real issue was that going to look for Kamino might not be a particularly wise move.
"Boss, the ships carrying the First Fleet's TOP4 for each vessel (captain, chief engineer, first officer, and senior engineer) plus the E/E (electrician) have arrived near Corellia. Starting tomorrow they'll enter CEC to familiarize themselves with the new ships; in three days, they'll conduct sea trials."
"Let's go. Come with me to the spaceportβwe're welcoming our brothers and sisters."
In early May of Galactic Standard Calendar Year 4, the first batch of "freighters" Max ordered from CECβone MPO-1400 Purrgil-class plus four heavily armed, reinforced Gozanti-class shipsβfinished construction and were about to be delivered to the Bespin Mandalorian Armed Forces Navy's First Fleet.
Back in his old world, even for the top industrial powerhouse, building a missile destroyer took one to two years. Here, building a 300-meter-long star cruiser took only three months. That alone spoke volumes about the terrifying productivity of a spacefaring civilization.
As expected from the famous Corellian Engineering Corporation, the First Fleet's five new ships had zero issues during operational acceptance and sea trials, and the handover went smoothly.
At the commissioning ceremony for their first voyage, Max Vizslaβspeaking as the head of Beskar Steel Securityβcalmly delivered the usual boilerplate about scaling up, getting stronger, and reaching new glory.
By mid-May, after the First Fleet arrived safely at Cloud City on Bespin, at the welcome ceremony and full assembly of the Bespin Mandalorian Armed Forces, Supreme Commander Max Vizsla could no longer hide his excitement and gave an impassioned speech:
"Today, the Bespin Mandalorian Armed Forces Navy First Fleet is officially commissioned!"
"This is the Way!"
"This is a small step for usβbut a giant step for Mandalorians. From this day forward, the era when Mandalorians had no navy, no capital ships, is gone forever! The era when authoritarians could park a few gunboats in near-space and dare to perform orbital bombardmentβdare to shout about purging Mandaloriansβthat era is gone forever!!!"3

During this period, under guidance from CEC's engineering teams, the Bespin starfighter production-and-maintenance base had already begun operating. Next, the First Fleet's five new ships would undergo carrier conversions at the base.
The MPO-1400 Purrgil-class would be refitted into a light carrier-cruiser with an internal heavy maintenance facility for Fang-class starfighters and hangar capacity for twelve Fang-class fighters. The Gozanti-class ships would have external racks installed; after conversion, each Gozanti could carry four Fang-class starfighters on those racks.
Once the refits were complete, Max Vizsla would personally lead the First Fleet toward the approximate region of Kamino to execute the mission: search for Kamino and Jango Fettβcodename "Retrieving the Lost."
It wasn't only to fulfill Senator Leev Garamby's commission. Max Vizsla had other goals.
During the mission, the First Fleet would drill carrier air wing launch-and-recovery, shipβfighter coordination, and shipβfighter opposition exercises. Using a low-risk but high-complexity operation to harden the First Fleet and accelerate the formation of real combat capabilityβthis was Max Vizsla's primary objective.
Second, he hoped to establish contact with the Kaminoans and build goodwill. Their unrivaled cloning technology had enormous value. At the current stage, Kaminoan cloning alone could solve the Bespin Mandalorian Armed Forces' future manpower pipeline.
If he could invite the Kaminoans to establish a cloning research center in Cloud City and support their continued R&D, then one dayβif Force-sensitives could also be cloned in batchesβCloud City's strength would rise to an entirely new tier.
In truth, the tailwind of recent successes had made Max Vizsla a little inflated. Deep down, he had a dangerous thought stirring: pretend to be a Jedi Master again, exploit Kamino's informational isolation, and con the Kaminoans into "adjusting" the clones currently in productionβso that, in the future, it would become a thorn in the Emperor's side.

In the Legends continuity, Jango Fett being Mandalorian is beyond dispute, and he was also a leader of the orthodox Mandalorian faction during the Mandalorian Civil War. In the current canon, his identity is more complicatedβofficial reference materials describe him as Mandalorian, but George Lucas personally viewed Jango as not Mandalorian.
PPS: In Legends, the Mandalorians fought two large-scale civil wars: the Mandalorian Civil War (60 BBYβ44 BBY) and the Great Clan Wars (44 BBYβ32 BBY). In the current canon, the Mandalorians fought three large-scale civil wars: the First Mandalorian Civil War (42 BBY), the Second (19 BBY), and the Third (2 BBYβ1 BBY).
PPPS: The official timeline for when Count Dooku left the Jedi Order has been revised multiple times.
Early material placed Dooku's departure at 42 BBY, when he left the Jedi and went to rule Serenno. Later it was revised to 32 BBY.
The latest "patch" is: in 42 BBY, Dooku left the Jedi Orderβbut due to his prestige and influence, he could still return to visit at any time. By 32 BBY, after falling to the dark side as Darth Tyranus, he severed ties with the Jedi completely.
