Chapter 40 - Chapter 40 The Desire Warden

The shard pulsed again.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire chamber responded.

The crimson veins in the stone walls brightened like arteries filling with blood. A low vibration spread through the floor beneath Elias and Nyx's boots, rippling outward from the floating fragment at the center of the room.

Elias felt it immediately.

Subterranean Awareness: 99%

His senses flared open like a door ripped from its hinges.

He could feel the spiral above them. The buried bodies. The restless Husks scratching against stone corridors. Even the distant hum of the ancient mechanism turning somewhere far below.

But this chamber—

This chamber was different.

It was alive with something else.

Emotion.

Desire.

Longing.

The shard spun faster.

Nyx stepped slightly in front of him, sword already drawn.

"I don't like this."

Elias exhaled slowly.

"Yeah."

The shard suddenly cracked.

A thin fracture split across its surface.

Then another.

The light within it leaked out like crimson mist.

Nyx tightened her grip on her sword.

"What is it doing?"

Elias swallowed.

"I think it's opening something."

The shard shattered.

Not violently.

Almost gently.

Its fragments drifted outward and dissolved into the air like glowing dust.

And something stepped out of the space where the shard had floated.

At first it was only a silhouette.

Tall.

Slender.

The shape slowly gained form as the crimson mist curled around it.

Curves emerged first.

The outline of a woman's body.

Then wings unfolded behind her—dark crimson membranes stretching wide before folding back like a cloak.

Two slender horns curved back from her temples.

And when the mist finally faded—

She stood there fully revealed.

The Desire Warden.

Her skin was pale as moonlight, marked with faint crimson runes that slowly pulsed across her shoulders and hips. Her long dark hair spilled down her back like liquid shadow.

She wore nothing.

Nothing except a faint shimmer of magic curling across her body like smoke.

Her eyes glowed deep crimson.

And when she smiled—

Elias felt the dungeon itself react.

Nyx muttered under her breath.

"…Well that's new."

The succubus tilted her head slightly.

Her gaze settled on Elias.

"Oh."

Her voice was smooth.

Low.

Velvet wrapped around steel.

"So you're the one."

Elias said nothing.

The succubus stepped closer, bare feet making no sound against the stone.

Her wings folded behind her elegantly.

"I felt you the moment you stepped into the spiral."

Her eyes glowed brighter.

"So much power…"

Her gaze drifted slowly over him.

"…and so much restraint."

Nyx stepped forward.

"Back away from him."

The succubus glanced at her.

For a moment she looked almost amused.

"Ah."

She smiled wider.

"The anchor."

Nyx frowned.

"The what?"

The succubus gestured toward her casually.

"You're the one keeping his mind intact."

Her gaze returned to Elias.

"That must be exhausting."

Elias felt pressure building behind his eyes.

Devour stirred uneasily.

Corruption Trace: 48%

The succubus spread her arms slowly.

"You've been resisting the spiral's temptations so well."

Her voice lowered.

"But everyone has limits."

The chamber shifted.

Reality cracked like glass.

And suddenly—

Elias wasn't standing in the dungeon anymore.

He stood in darkness.

Warm darkness.

A soft glow slowly formed ahead of him.

And the succubus stepped forward again.

But she looked different now.

Closer.

Her form more detailed.

More vivid.

Her wings slowly vanished behind her as if she no longer needed them.

Her body gleamed softly in the dim light.

Smooth skin.

Perfect lines.

Her crimson eyes held his.

"Don't fight it."

She stepped closer.

Slowly.

Every movement deliberate.

"You've been starving yourself."

Her fingers brushed lightly along his chest.

The touch felt real.

Warm.

Electric.

Elias clenched his jaw.

"This isn't real."

"Of course it is."

Her hand slid up to his shoulder.

"You feel it, don't you?"

His heart beat harder.

Devour pulsed.

The succubus smiled knowingly.

"Power like yours burns with hunger."

Her voice softened.

"And hunger wants satisfaction."

She stepped even closer.

Now her body was nearly touching his.

Her warmth surrounded him.

Her scent filled the air.

"You're strong."

Her fingers traced lightly down his arm.

"But strength alone isn't enough."

She leaned forward slightly.

Her breath brushed his neck.

"You need release."

Images flashed across Elias's mind.

Memories.

Nyx smiling.

Nyx laughing beside a fire.

Nyx standing close enough to kiss.

The succubus noticed instantly.

Her smile deepened.

"Oh."

Her form shifted.

Her hair lightened.

Her eyes changed color.

In seconds—

She looked like Nyx.

Not exactly.

But close enough to hurt.

The illusion-Nyx stepped closer.

Still nude.

Still glowing faintly in the soft light.

"You see?" she whispered.

"You already want this."

Her fingers slid across his chest again.

"Why deny it?"

His breath grew heavier.

The illusion was perfect.

Too perfect.

Then—

A distant voice broke through the fog.

"ELIAS!"

The illusion flickered.

The succubus frowned slightly.

"Persistent little anchor."

The voice came again.

Closer.

"Elias snap out of it!"

The illusion shattered.

Reality slammed back into place.

Elias staggered.

Nyx stood in front of him gripping his shoulders.

Hard.

Her eyes burned with anger and concern.

"Stay with me!"

Across the chamber—

The real succubus hovered slightly above the floor, wings half-spread.

Her expression looked annoyed.

"Well."

She sighed.

"That usually works longer."

Nyx pulled Elias closer protectively.

"You okay?"

Elias rubbed his temples.

"Yeah."

"Did she—"

"Try to get in my head?"

Nyx nodded.

"Yeah."

He glanced at the succubus.

"She's good at it."

The succubus smiled again.

"Oh I'm excellent at it."

Her wings spread wider.

"You see, I don't just feed on lust."

Her gaze flicked between them.

"I feed on connection."

She pointed lightly at Elias.

"He wants you."

Then she pointed at Nyx.

"And you want him."

Nyx didn't deny it.

The succubus chuckled softly.

"That makes you both delicious."

Her wings beat once.

She rose slightly higher in the air.

"So let's see how strong that connection really is."

The chamber darkened again.

Dozens of illusions formed around them.

Every one of them—

Nyx.

Different versions.

Some smiling softly.

Some reaching toward him.

All completely exposed.

All whispering his name.

Elias closed his eyes briefly.

Devour stirred again.

Corruption Trace: 50%

Nyx stepped closer beside him.

"You don't look."

He nodded.

"I know."

Her hand slipped into his.

Grounding.

Warm.

Real.

The illusions began circling them slowly.

Whispering.

Tempting.

The succubus watched from above.

"Give in," she purred.

"Just once."

Elias squeezed Nyx's hand tighter.

Then opened his eyes.

And stepped forward.

Straight toward the real succubus.

Her smile faltered slightly.

"Oh?"

Devour ignited in his veins.

"I'm done with the tricks."

Nyx grinned beside him.

"Finally."

The succubus's wings snapped open fully.

Her crimson eyes burned brighter.

"Good."

Her voice darkened.

"Because the fun part is when you start fighting back."

The chamber exploded into motion.

The true battle had begun.
