Chapter 54 - Ch43. The Night was Sleepy

After dinner, the villa slowly returned to silence.

The warmth of the meal lingered in the air for a while. The soft clatter of dishes in the kitchen gradually faded as Aavya finished cleaning. Outside the tall glass windows, the city lights flickered in the distance, painting faint reflections across the polished marble floors. Compared to the noisy hostel corridors they had been used to, the villa felt almost too peaceful.

Eventually the three of them went to their rooms.

Akshat disappeared into his bedroom without saying much, as usual. Aavya stayed behind for a few minutes to wipe the last bit of water from the counter before heading upstairs.

Ryuki returned to the guest room Alexander had prepared for her, closing the door quietly behind her.

The room was large and comfortable, yet Ryuki didn't immediately fall asleep.

She lay on her back staring at the ceiling, the faint glow of moonlight slipping through the curtains and casting pale shadows across the walls. Her mind wandered back to the dinner conversation.

Akshat's words about her sister echoed inside her head.

He had spoken about the illness calmly, as if discussing something simple, but the meaning behind those words was overwhelming. The treatment her sister needed was impossibly expensive. For months Ryuki had been desperately searching for ways to pay the hospital bills.

Yet Akshat had simply said he would handle it.

No hesitation.

No conditions.

That kind of generosity made her uneasy.

Ryuki slowly turned to her side and closed her eyes, but sleep refused to come easily. Akshat's strange confidence, the way he smiled when she questioned his intentions, and the way he treated everything as if the world itself was just another puzzle to solve—all of it made her feel like she didn't understand him at all.

Eventually exhaustion pulled her into sleep.

Several hours later she woke suddenly.

The room was dark now, illuminated only by the faint silver light of the moon. For a moment she remained still, trying to understand why she had woken up.

Then she felt it.

Her throat was dry.

She let out a small sigh before sitting up and brushing her hair away from her face. The villa was silent as she stepped out into the hallway. The marble floor felt cool beneath her feet, sending a small chill up her spine.

Ryuki quietly walked toward the kitchen.

At night the house felt much larger than it had during the day. Every step echoed faintly, and the quiet atmosphere made the place feel almost mysterious. The hallway lights had been dimmed, leaving only a few soft lamps glowing along the walls.

As she passed by one of the rooms near the end of the corridor, she noticed something unusual.

A faint light was shining from inside.

Ryuki slowed her steps.

The door was slightly open.

Curiosity tugged at her mind before she could stop herself. She moved a little closer, intending only to glance inside for a second.

Then she saw them.

Inside the softly lit room stood Akshat and Aavya.

The golden light of a bedside lamp illuminated them in warm tones. Akshat was leaning casually against the edge of a desk while Aavya stood in front of him, her expression uncertain but gentle.

Ryuki instinctively froze in the hallway.

She hadn't meant to spy.

Yet something about the moment kept her from moving away.

"I thought you were asleep," Akshat said quietly.

Aavya shook her head slightly, her long hair falling over one shoulder. "I tried, but my mind wouldn't stop thinking."

Akshat tilted his head a little, studying her face.

"About what?"

Aavya hesitated before answering.

"Everything," she admitted softly. "The hostel… Ryuki's sister… you fighting half the city's strongest students like it's nothing."

Akshat gave a faint, amused smile.

"That last part sounds exaggerated."

"It's not," Aavya replied.

Her voice carried a quiet seriousness that made Akshat's smile fade slightly.

Aavya stepped closer to him, her hands nervously clasped together.

"You always act like nothing bothers you," she said. "Like you've already planned ten moves ahead of everyone else."

Akshat looked at her for a moment without speaking.

Then he slowly straightened from the desk.

"Planning ahead is easier than reacting late," he said calmly.

Aavya sighed softly.

"That's not what I meant."

There was a brief pause before she continued.

"I just worry about you."

Those words seemed to catch Akshat off guard.

He stared at her for a moment as if unsure how to respond.

Aavya took another small step forward. The distance between them had nearly disappeared now.

"You fight dangerous people like it's normal," she said quietly. "But you're still human, Akshat."

Akshat raised an eyebrow and said "Debatable."

Aavya frowned slightly before reaching out and grabbing the front of his shirt.

The sudden movement surprised him.

"I'm serious," she said softly.

Akshat's expression softened as he looked down at her.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Then Akshat gently placed his hand over hers.

"You worry too much."

Aavya didn't let go.

Instead she stepped even closer, resting her forehead lightly against his chest. The movement was hesitant at first, but Akshat didn't push her away.

His arms slowly wrapped around her shoulders.

The quiet intimacy of the moment filled the room. "You don't have to carry everything alone," Aavya murmured.

Akshat let out a quiet breath.

"That's kind of the job description."

Aavya lifted her head and looked up at him. The faint light reflected in her eyes, making them appear softer than usual.

"You always joke when things get serious."

"Only when the alternative is worse."

For a moment they simply looked at each other.

Then Aavya reached up and lightly touched his cheek.

Akshat didn't move away.

The space between them slowly disappeared as she leaned closer. Their foreheads brushed briefly before their lips met in a quiet, gentle kiss.

The moment was soft and unhurried.

Akshat's hand rested against her back as she leaned into him, her fingers curling slightly into the fabric of his shirt.

For a few seconds the outside world seemed to disappear completely.

From the hallway, Ryuki felt her chest tighten slightly. She hadn't expected to see something like this.

Something about the scene felt strangely personal, almost like she had stepped into a moment that wasn't meant for anyone else.

After a moment she quietly stepped backward.

Her feet moved carefully across the floor as she retreated down the hallway without making a sound.

By the time she reached the kitchen, her heart was beating a little faster than before.

She poured herself a glass of water and leaned against the counter.

The cool liquid slid down her throat, easing the dryness, but it didn't quiet the strange feeling swirling in her chest.

She stared at the surface of the water inside the glass.

Akshat's calm voice echoed faintly in her memory.

His smile.

His confidence.

And now…

That quiet moment with Aavya.

Ryuki shook her head slightly as if trying to clear her thoughts. "This place is going to be troublesome," she muttered under her breath.

Somewhere down the hallway, the light inside Akshat's room slowly turned off.

The villa returned to silence.

But for Ryuki, sleep didn't come easily again that night.

Something inside her had begun to change.

And she wasn't sure yet whether that change would become friendship…

Or something far more complicated.
