Kakuju and Shisui stood in silence for a long moment, slowly recovering from the discomfort Sarutobi Aoki had left behind.
"Kakuju," Shisui finally said, his face breaking into its usual sun-warm smile. "What made you want to meet today?"
The smile was there, but it couldn't hide the exhaustion in his eyes.
"We haven't hung out in ages," Kakuju sighed. "Ever since we made jonin, everyone's just⊠busy."
It felt like yesterday they were fighting side by sideâKakuju, Shisui, and Juri. Now they all had their own assignments. Their own responsibilities. Hell, he and Juri were even teaching others now.
"True," Shisui said, a flicker of nostalgia in his weary eyes. "Those days⊠even with the fighting, it was simpler than all this⊠maneuvering."
He'd walked right into it. Kakuju didn't even have to steer the conversation.
"Maneuvering?" Kakuju feigned surprise. "There's maneuvering in Root?"
Shisui paused, remembering Kakuju's own brief stint in the shadows of Root. He shook his head. "No. Not Root."
He managed a weak smile.
The wary, sidelong glances from the village elders. DanzĆ's occasional probing, loaded questions. The Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi's deliberate distance⊠It all weighed on him.
And then there was the clan. As the only Uchiha of his generation to penetrate the inner circles of Konoha's power, he carried their expectations. Their warnings. Their sometimes outright demands. It was⊠tiring.
"You look exhausted, Shisui," Kakuju said, shifting tactics since Shisui clearly wanted to drop the subject. "Don't try to carry everything yourself. Don't shoulder every single responsibility."
Shisui shook his head. "I won't."
He said it. But Kakuju knew he probably wouldn't follow through.
The tragedy of Shisuiâand Itachiâwas right there. Always ready to sacrifice themselves for some imagined 'greater good.' In a way, it was arrogance. They believed they alone bore some colossal burden, destined to walk in darkness.
No one could deny their strength. But you had to admit their method was flawed.
"I was a Root operative once," Kakuju said, changing tack. "I know DanzĆ-sama."
That got Shisui's attention. "What kind of man is he?"
The question itself was telling. The old bastard had already started his work.
"DanzĆ-sama walks a tightrope in the dark," Kakuju said carefully. "It might be a shortcut to peace, to protecting interests. But tightropes are dangerous. One misstep."
He met Shisui's gaze. "I want to lead Konoha down a broad road in the sunlight. It might not be the fastest path. But it's steady. And everyone can walk it together."
"Shisui. Whether it's Juri, or you. Whether it's the Uchiha, or any other clan in Konoha⊠I want us all walking a road paved with light."
Shisui gave a bitter smile. "But some shadows⊠someone has to bear them alone."
Kakuju almost sighed out loud. Was everyone in this ninja world stuck in the same damn thought loop?
"Why alone?" he pressed. "Where there's light, there's shadow. If a shadow is carried by many, the weight each person feels is just a sliver."
He watched Shisui process this. "If one person tries to bear all the darkness alone⊠eventually, that darkness will consume them. That's not noble sacrifice. That's selfish suffering."
"Every great tree has the right to bask in the sun. And every great tree has the duty to share in the shade."
He let the words hang.
Shisui stared at him, blinking as if seeing a new sky.
"Shisui," Kakuju said, a real smile touching his lips, his eyes catching the fragmented gold of the setting sun. "I'll show you a new shinobi world. Don't you want to see that day?"
"I do."
The fog in his mind cleared. Sunlight broke through.
A genuine, long-absent smile finally spread across Shisui's face. To see that brighter world with Kakuju⊠he'd remember these words.
The Next Day. Hokage's Office.
The heads of every major clan had gathered. Hiruzen Sarutobi sat at the head of the table. Kakuju sat to his immediate right.
Directly across from Kakuju sat DanzĆ Shimura.
"After the Nine-Tails attack," Hiruzen began, his voice filling the quiet room, "we undertook a complete reorganization of the village layout."
"Today, we finalize Konoha's new design."
The Nine-Tails had flattened entire districts. Weeks of day-and-night reconstruction had finally restored the buildingsâand allowed for a redesign.
A massive map unfurled across the table. Konoha's footprint had doubled. New sectors spread out in a fan-like pattern, streets cutting through them like arteries.
"Councilman DanzĆ will now explain the new allocations."
The moment DanzĆ produced his black pointer rod, Kakuju felt a prickle of unease.
"This outer sector," DanzĆ announced, tapping the map with cold precision, "is allocated to the Uchiha clan."
Silence. A thunderclap disguised as a sentence.
Kakuju's eyes slid to Fugaku. The young clan head looked like he was one second from decapitating DanzĆ and using his head for kick practice.
"The outer sector?" Hiruzen said mildly, his tone giving nothing away.
"Correct." DanzĆ's icy gaze swept over Fugaku.
"Why?" Fugaku demanded. "There must be a reason for moving the Uchiha from the village center to the periphery!"
DanzĆ tapped the map again. "The Nine-Tails incident was caused by your clan. This is your punishment!"
Fugaku's eyes snapped wide. "What proof do you have that the Uchiha caused it?"
DanzĆ snorted. "Every shinobi in the village saw the Nine-Tails under the control of a Sharingan. Will the clan head still deny it?"
"Youâ!"
Veins bulged on Fugaku's clenched fists. The Nine-Tails incident was a landmine buried beneath the Uchiha's feet. One wrong step, and their standing in the village would be blown to dust.
The other clan heads watched, eyes down, minds carefully blank. Not their problem.
Just as Fugaku looked ready to launch himself across the table, Hiruzen slammed his hand down.
"Enough. The Uchiha will take the outer sector. The positions of the other clans remain unchanged."
A collective, subtle exhale of relief from the other clan heads.
Fugaku's knuckles turned white. His gaze cut to the Third Hokage. The message was clear now. Hiruzen was allowing this.
DanzĆ added fuel to the fire with a contemptuous "Hmph."
Fugaku bit down hard, teeth grinding, fighting for control. How would he face his clan?
"Hokage-sama," Fugaku forced out, the anger hot in his chest. "Since my clan's territory is decided, my presence here is no longer required."
Hiruzen didn't reply. The air grew stiff, heavy.
Kakuju sighed internally and stood. "Clan Head Fugaku, please, there's been a misunderstanding. You're misreading Hokage-sama and Councilman DanzĆ's intentions."
Three pairs of eyesâFugaku's, DanzĆ's, Hiruzen'sâsnapped to him in confusion.
"Clan Head," Kakuju continued, his tone earnest. "The Uchiha and the Hyuga are Konoha's two great clans. The Hyuga protect the village's heart. The Uchiha will protect its outer shell."
"This is a sign of the Hokage's trust in you! Entrusting the village's most crucial external defense to the Uchihaâwhat greater proof of his faith in your clan's strength and loyalty could there be?"
Silence. A few heads tilted. That⊠sort of made sense?
[Ding! Target: Uchiha Fugaku. Favorability: 60!]
"Moreover," Kakuju pressed on, "entrusting such a heavy responsibility to the Uchiha is the Hokage's way of expressing his hope that you will redeem the clan's standing. The shinobi who controlled the Nine-Tails with a Sharingan remains at large, but Hokage-sama would never doubt the Uchiha clan's loyalty to Konoha."
His words did two things: draped the Uchiha's relocation in a noble purpose and painted Hiruzen as magnanimous.
He glanced at DanzĆ, who suddenly looked a bit isolated. Kakuju fought the urge to roll his eyes and added, "Councilman DanzĆ misspoke due to his excessive concern for village security. But our desire to protect Konoha is the same, isn't it?"
[Ding! Target: DanzĆ Shimura. Favorability: 80!]
The dark cloud over DanzĆ lifted. Yes. This was better.
Hiruzen looked at Kakuju with deep approval. This was why he'd chosen his successor.
"Truly⊠masterful rhetoric," Nara SĆsai murmured behind his uncle, Nara Shikaku.
"Clan Head Fugaku," Kakuju said, turning the final key. "Your son, Itachi, is my student. Itachi not only holds deep love for this village, but also profound respect for Hokage-sama and all the seniors here who have fought for it."
"To raise a son like that⊠who could possibly doubt the clan head's loyalty?"
The words reinforced Fugaku's position. More importantly, they reminded everyone in the room: Uchiha Itachi is my student. I am the Hokage's heir. Connect the dots.
[Ding! Target: Uchiha Fugaku. Favorability: 65!]
Fugaku was smart. He got it. The displeasure melted from his face, replaced by deep chagrin.
"Hokage-sama," he said, bowing slightly to Hiruzen. "My words earlier were out of line."
Hiruzen, his bruised dignity now restored, waved a magnanimous hand. "Think nothing of it! We are all striving to protect the village!"
The moment he said it, the sycophants pounced. The tense, explosive meeting dissolved into a chorus of agreement and false harmony.
The rest of the meeting sailed through. Within an hour, everything was settled.
As the clan heads filed out, Hiruzen signaled for the Nara to stay.
"Hokage-sama." Nara Shikaku stood before the Hokage's desk, his nephew SĆsai beside him.
Hiruzen's gaze settled on SĆsai. "A fine young man."
The Nara clan's genius was legendary. Every Hokage in living memory had a Nara by his side. Hiruzen had picked SĆsai immediately. The boy was Kakuju's classmate. Their bond would be closer, more natural.
He didn't want a seasoned fox like Shikaku guiding his heirâtoo much risk of manipulation. Even trusting Shikaku's character, Hiruzen would take no chances.
"Have this one spend more time with Kakuju. Konoha's future rests on their shoulders."
The statement was as close to a formal announcement as it got. Kakuju's status. SĆsai's future role.
"Understood." Shikaku and SĆsai answered as one.
Meanwhile, outside the conference room, Kakuju found Fugaku waiting for him.
"Clan Head Fugaku?"
He had a pretty good idea why.
"Kakuju. Walk with me?"
"Of course."
They moved toward a quieter stretch along the Konoha riverbank.
"Back there⊠thank you." Fugaku's gratitude was genuine.
"Uncle Fugaku, you're too kind." Kakuju smiled. "It was nothing, just a few words."
Because of Shisui and Itachi, Kakuju visited the Uchiha compound often. 'Uncle' was his usual address for Fugakuâthough it wouldn't have been appropriate in the meeting.
"Those few words were crucial." Fugaku knew exactly how much weight they carried. 'Crucial' was an understatement.
"Uncle, don't worry. The fact that Hokage-sama allowed Itachi to become my student means he doesn't truly suspect your clan."
Fugaku's eyes darkened. Suspicion was definitely there. Just not as thick as DanzĆ's.
"DanzĆ and the Hokage both fear the Uchiha's power. Especially after the Nine-Tails." Fugaku stated it plainly. That fear, that suspicionâit was digging a chasm between them.
"Uncle Fugaku, trust me. As long as I'm here, there will be no irreparable conflict between the Uchiha and the village. The Uchiha will be safe."
It was a promise. And a practical one. Everyone knew how useful the Sharingan was. Even DanzĆ knewâwhich was why he coveted them. But letting that old man have them would be a waste. Some things were best kept original.
"Aren't you afraid, Kakuju?" Fugaku asked quietly. If Kakuju became Hokage, would he walk the same wary path as the Third?
It was a fair question.
"First," Kakuju said, his smile easy, "I trust Shisui. And Juri. And Itachi."
He looked straight at Fugaku. "Second⊠I trust myself."
"Trust your own judgment?"
Kakuju shook his head. "Wrong. I don't trust my judgment."
He paused, letting the river's sound fill the space.
"I trust my strength."
He had the power to suppress the Uchiha effortlessly if needed. The Third and DanzĆ feared the Uchiha because they weren't strong enough to control them.
Kakuju was different.
When you possessed absolute strength, why would you fear those who were weaker?
Fugaku stared, stunned. He hadn't expected that answer. It was unexpected, yet made perfect sense.
"Kakuju," he said, a note of warning in his voice. "Don't underestimate the Uchiha's power."
In most people's eyes, the Three Tomoe was the pinnacle of the Sharingan. The MangekyĆ. The Eternal MangekyĆ. Even the Rinnegan. These were secrets.
Kakuju knew exactly what he meant. Fugaku had already awakened his MangekyĆ. The warning wasn't surprising.
"Uncle Fugaku," Kakuju replied, his grin turning sharp. "Don't underestimate me, either."
He gestured ahead. "My place is just up there. I'll take my leave now."
