"Well… bring all the warning bells. If the sound isn't blocked quickly, I won't even be able to see the Pokémon clearly at night."
Icarus searched through his small house, checking his supplies one last time.
This was his first time going out at night, and he was still a little uneasy. After all, Bellsprout wasn't a nocturnal Pokémon. Although it could see better than him in the dark, it was definitely not as capable as the Pokémon that roamed at night.
If he hadn't discovered a small number of newborn-level Flying-type Pokémon outside the forest yesterday, he wouldn't have planned a night hunt at this stage at all.
"Originally, I should've waited until you broke through to the normal level before trying something like this…"
After placing the last bottle of wound medicine and repellent spray into his backpack, Icarus hesitated.
"Forget it. We'll return early. Just reconnaissance first."
"Spri, spri!"
Unlike him, Bellsprout showed no hesitation and kept urging him from the doorway.
"Alright, alright. Let's go."
With a deep breath, Icarus put on his spatial backpack and stepped outside with Bellsprout.
Soon, they arrived at the city gate. Perhaps because of Captain Sam, the guards were much more friendly this time.
"Hey, you're Icarus-kun, right? It's almost evening. Heading out?" asked a uniformed guard in his thirties.
"Yes, Brother Hui. Just scouting and testing the waters," Icarus replied casually, deliberately avoiding details.
After all, not many people had discovered the opportunity yet. The fewer competitors, the higher his success rate.
"You've got guts."
"Yeah, we didn't dare go out alone at your age."
"Be careful. Wear all your protective gear. It's uncomfortable, but it's better than dying."
The guards were clearly more enthusiastic than before. Icarus guessed it was because they had seen him speaking with Captain Sam. An elite trainer carried weight in a small town.
"Thank you, brothers. I'll be careful."
"Oh, and remember—the gate closes at 9:30 p.m. sharp!" Brother Hui reminded him.
"I won't stay out overnight on my first attempt. I'll be back."
With that, Icarus stepped out of the city.
---
"Bellsprout, stay alert tonight. Different Pokémon appear after dark. Listen carefully."
As they walked, Icarus reviewed the information he had gathered from the internet café. He had researched every nocturnal Pokémon recorded in the forest over the past few years.
"First, Oddish. You should know it well—you learned several absorbing moves from observing it."
He pulled up a picture on his worn-out phone and showed it to Bellsprout.
"Its body is dark blue, and the leaves on its head look just like real grass. It blends perfectly into the night. So watch your footing when we enter the forest."
"Spri spri."
Bellsprout nodded, recognizing it.
"If we do encounter one, don't panic. Its combat power is average, and it's timid. It may even run away on its own."
Then Icarus pulled up another image.
"Now for the main target tonight—Zubat."
He handed over the phone again.
"Its body is a lighter blue than Oddish, and its wings are purple. The darker colors make it hard to see at night."
"Spri."
Bellsprout studied the image carefully.
"The most important thing is this—it has no eyes. It relies on ultrasonic waves to detect its surroundings."
"Spri? Spri?"
No eyes? Then what was ultrasound?
"To explain it simply…"
Icarus took a small device from his backpack and activated it briefly.
Although he couldn't hear anything himself, Bellsprout's vines trembled slightly.
"Spri…"
"Zubat detects objects by releasing ultrasonic waves and sensing the echoes. Since I can't perceive those waves, I'll rely on you."
"Spri!"
It firmly memorized the sensation.
"That's why I bought four of these."
"Spri?"
Why four?
"These devices emit ultrasonic interference. When you sense Zubat's waves, we'll each activate one and approach from different directions."
He held up the remaining devices.
"Once we're close enough, you'll quickly place the other two in the remaining directions using Vine Whip and switch them on. If all four directions are disrupted, Zubat will effectively become blind."
A smile crept onto Icarus's face.
"Spri spri!"
Bellsprout nodded enthusiastically.
"But the timing must be fast. If even one or two directions regain ultrasonic feedback, it'll escape."
"Spri!"
No problem.
"There is one weakness in this plan, though."
He grew serious.
"When we're facing each other from opposite sides, if one device isn't turned off at the right moment, the alert Zubat might immediately change positions."
"Spri?"
Then should it turn its device off?
"No. You'll need both vines free to place the extra devices. If you're exposed, it'll attack you first."
Zubat hunted at night. If they sensed prey nearby, they would strike without hesitation.
"So I'll be the one to switch mine off."
A trace of determination flashed across Icarus's eyes.
"Spri! Spri spri!"
Bellsprout protested anxiously.
"Don't worry. I'm wearing full-body protective gear."
Looking at Bellsprout's worried expression, Icarus felt a warmth in his chest.
"Trust me. We'll execute this cleanly."
Night had fallen.
The hunt was about to begin.
