Bonus chapter

"Closer… slowly… just a little closer…"
Icarus moved forward with extreme caution.
Ahead of him, the Zubat continued to emit ultrasonic waves, circling between a few trees as it patrolled its territory.
"Sprout spri."
Through their contract, Bellsprout signaled that it had already positioned the devices and chosen the placement spots.
"Good."
Now able to make out Zubat's rough outline, Icarus steeled himself and switched off the ultrasonic horn in his hand.
---
Zubat immediately noticed something.
Its ultrasonic waves reflected the outline of a humanoid creature nearby.
Human.
Instinctively, it recalled the warnings passed down in the cave: humans in the wild often travel with Pokémon. Be careful.
It emitted another pulse.
No other energy signatures.
It had been hungry all day.
Judging there was no immediate danger, Zubat folded its wings and darted straight toward Icarus.
---
Thud!
Before Icarus could react, a dark shape slammed into his shoulder.
"Sprout!"
Seeing Zubat attack without releasing another pulse, Bellsprout instantly extended its vines to both sides, placed the remaining two ultrasonic horns into position, and activated them.
Zubat immediately unleashed a Supersonic wave forward.
Although Icarus couldn't hear it, his head throbbed violently.
Low- and mid-grade protective suits could resist physical impact—but not special attacks.
Gritting his teeth through the dizziness, Icarus raised the horn in his hand, aimed roughly at the dark blur, and pressed the switch.
Zubat froze midair.
Icarus didn't hesitate. He rolled several times across the ground, creating distance from his previous position.
Zubat attempted to use ultrasonic waves again to locate him—
—but received nothing but chaotic interference from all directions.
It screeched anxiously, repeatedly emitting pulses.
No feedback.
No location.
No sense of space.
---
Icarus watched the dark silhouette flailing uncertainly.
"It's working… Now!"
Right now, Zubat was like a person suddenly thrown into total darkness—unable to see, unable to orient themselves. Fear would naturally take over.
He lifted the net gun.
"Aim… fire!"
A silk bullet shot out.
Thwap!
The net spread across a branch—missed.
"At this distance? Did it sense it—or was that luck?"
He didn't dwell on it. He immediately fired again.
The sound startled Zubat. It shrieked and increased the frequency of its ultrasonic pulses.
"We can't save ammunition now."
Icarus decided on rapid fire. If Zubat panicked and fled blindly, the opportunity would be gone.
Three shots rang out in quick succession.
Thwap! Thwap! Thump!
This time, the net fully expanded midair—
—and wrapped around Zubat.
The dark figure dropped straight to the ground.
At only six meters away, even with poor visibility, Zubat's nearly eighty-centimeter wingspan made it an easy enough target.
"Now! Bellsprout, Vine Whip!"
"Sprout!"
Bellsprout didn't need reminding. As soon as Zubat hit the ground, reinforced vines lashed forward.
Zubat sensed the incoming attack through air disturbance and energy fluctuation—
—but trapped inside the net, it couldn't escape.
Crack! Crack!
Two solid hits landed.
"Sprout!"
Instead of retracting, Bellsprout tightened its vines, binding Zubat securely.
Zubat shrieked in pain as thorned vines pierced its body.
Fortunately, Zubat's species relied on ultrasonic communication; its normal cries were not loud.
"Sprout spri!"
Bellsprout dragged the restrained Zubat slightly farther away, then immediately released a thick cloud of Sleep Powder.
Wave after wave of powder enveloped the struggling Pokémon.
Zubat resisted at first—the pain keeping it conscious—
—but eventually, under sustained exposure, its movements slowed.
Its cries weakened.
Then it went limp.
"Good job, Bellsprout."
"Use Absorb slowly. Drain its energy and weaken its resistance. If it wakes up, use Sleep Powder again."
Even unconscious Pokémon could subconsciously resist Poké Ball capture. Icarus didn't want to waste one.
Bellsprout obeyed, carefully siphoning off energy.
After a while, Zubat stirred weakly from pain—
"Sprout."
Another wave of Sleep Powder fell over it.
Eventually, Zubat let out a faint cry and completely lost the ability to fight.
---
"Alright… time for the final step."
Icarus took out a Poké Ball and threw it.
Click.
A red beam engulfed Zubat and drew it inside.
The Poké Ball landed on the ground.
Shake.
Shake.
The red light blinked repeatedly.
Even unconscious, Zubat's subconscious resisted the foreign imprint.
Icarus held his breath.
Click.
The ball locked.
"…We did it."
He let out a long breath, then broke into a wide grin.
"We succeeded, Bellsprout!"
He picked Bellsprout up in excitement, hugging it tightly.
Their first Flying-type Pokémon.
Zubat had been captured.
