Chapter 56 - The Alchemist's Gift

End of Month — Day 75 in the secret realm — Morning

The artificial sky painted itself in shades of gold and rose as Nova walked toward the ranking hall. Three weeks had passed since his first lesson with Katherine. Three weeks of arena battles, alchemy training, and cultivation that pushed his body to its limits.

The results spoke for themselves.

CURRENT STANDINGS — SECOND YEAR

Rank 12 — Kaelen Stoneheart — Class A — 2nd Order, 8th Rank

Rank 14 — Seraphina Cross — Class A — 2nd Order, 8th Rank

Rank 16 — Darius Vane — Class A — 2nd Order, 7th Rank

Rank 18 — Nova Almond — Class A — 2nd Order, 9th Rank

Rank 23 — Marcus Webb — Class A — 2nd Order, 7th Rank

Rank 27 — Vivienne Reed — Class A — 2nd Order, 6th Rank

Rank 31 — Rina Moon — Class A — 2nd Order, 6th Rank

Rank 45 — Corbin Hale — Class B — 2nd Order, 5th Rank

Rank 67 — Tessa Blackwood — Class B — 2nd Order, 4th Rank

Rank 89 — Priscilla — Class C — 2nd Order, 1st Rank

Eighteenth overall. Class A, finally. His cultivation had stabilized at 2nd Order, 9th Rank—one step from 3rd Order, the threshold where true power began.

And Priscilla had broken through to 2nd Order, 1st Rank just three days ago. Her first real step toward matching the monsters at the top.

Nova smiled—a rare expression, warm and genuine.

Alchemy Tower

The laboratory buzzed with activity.

Where weeks ago the halls had been quiet, now students crowded every available space. Word had spread—the beautiful third-year assistant with the golden hair and sharper tongue was worth watching. Not just for her looks, but for her skill.

Katherine moved between workbenches with effortless grace, correcting techniques, offering advice, occasionally laughing at a student's failed attempt. Her presence drew eyes from every corner of the room.

Nova leaned against the doorway, watching.

A first-year boy—Class D, by his uniform—approached Katherine with a bubbling flask. His face was flushed, his words stumbling. Katherine listened politely, then pointed at his heating element with a gentle smile. The boy's flush deepened as he realized his mistake.

She's good with them, Nova observed. Patient. Kind. Even when they're here for the wrong reasons.

Katherine glanced up, catching his gaze. Her smile shifted—warmer, more genuine, touched with that familiar teasing light.

"Nova. You're early."

"Always."

She excused herself from the first-year and crossed to him, ignoring the jealous looks that followed. "Master Aldric returned yesterday. He's taken over the advanced courses, which means I actually have time for proper tutoring now."

"Good timing. I need your help with something."

Katherine's eyebrows rose. "Oh?"

Nova pulled out a small box—wooden, unadorned, but sealed with careful intent. He opened it, revealing the herbs inside.

Bloodvine Root. Heartpetal Blossom. Silvervein Moss. And at the center, carefully wrapped, the Starlight Blossom—epic-grade, pulsing with contained energy.

Katherine's eyes widened. "Those are—"

"Bloodline herbs. Meridian expanders. One epic-grade specimen I've been saving." Nova met her gaze. "I want to make pills. For me. For someone else. I need your help to get them right."

Katherine studied him for a long moment. Then she smiled.

"Alright. Let's see what you can really do."

Alchemy Lab — Private Session — Afternoon

The work was intense.

Katherine guided him through each formula with precision, her expertise filling gaps in his knowledge. The All-Seeing Eye tracked every reaction, every temperature fluctuation, every moment when the mixture approached perfection.

Hours passed like minutes.

When the first pill emerged—a Bloodline Awakening Pill, mid-grade, perfectly formed—Katherine held it up to the light with something like awe.

"You did it. First try."

"We did it." Nova accepted the pill, examining it with his Eye. BLOODLINE AWAKENING PILL — MID-GRADE. EFFECT: +5-8% bloodline activation. VALUE: 3,000 gold.

"Modest," Katherine noted. "Most alchemists would be crowing about a first-try success."

"I don't crow."

"No. You just stand there looking mysterious with those ridiculous eyes." But she was smiling. "What's next?"

Nova pulled out another set of herbs.

Alchemy Lab — Evening

By the time they finished, six pills sat on the workbench.

BLOODLINE AWAKENING PILL (MID-GRADE) x2

Effect: +5-8% bloodline activation each

MANA EXPANSION PILL (MID-GRADE) x3

Effect: +15% mana capacity permanently

SOUL PERCEPTION PILL (LOW-GRADE) x1

Effect: Temporary boost to soul perception range (24 hours)

Katherine picked up the last pill, examining it with obvious surprise. "This is for me?"

"You helped. You should be compensated."

She studied him for a long moment—those mismatched eyes, that expressionless face, the casual way he offered priceless gifts like they were nothing.

"You're useful," he said honestly. "Skilled. Trustworthy. A good teacher. Keeping you happy benefits me in the long run."

Katherine stared at him. Then she laughed—bright and genuine, filling the lab with warmth.

"Only you would turn generosity into a calculated investment." She shook her head, still smiling. "Fine. I accept your investment. And I'll even throw in future lessons for free."

"Generous."

"Calculated." She winked. "See? I learn from the best."

Nova's Room

Priscilla was waiting, as always.

"Nova—"

He crossed to her, pulling her close. She melted against him, trembling slightly.

"I have something for you."

He pulled out the three Mana Expansion Pills. Priscilla stared at them, recognition dawning.

"Are those—"

"For you. One now, one in three days, one in a week. They'll increase your mana capacity permanently." He pressed them into her hands. "You're 2nd Order now. But you need to grow faster. These will help."

Priscilla's eyes glistened.

"Nova—"

She kissed him then—fierce and desperate and full of everything she couldn't say. When they broke apart, tears tracked down her cheeks.

"I love you," she whispered. "I know you don't say it much. But I love you."

Nova held her close.

"I know."

Late Night

Priscilla slept, her breathing slow and peaceful. The first pill had already begun working—Nova could sense her mana expanding, her core strengthening.

He sat at his desk, reviewing the remaining pills.

Two bloodline pills, he thought. With these, I can push past 60% activation. Unlock whatever comes next.

He swallowed one.

Warmth spread through his chest—familiar now, but no less intense. His blood sang with new energy, his core pulsed, his very existence shifted.

GODLESS SYSTEM NOTIFICATION

Bloodline Activation: 55% → 58%

New ability threshold: 60%

Two more percent, Nova thought. Soon.

He looked at the Moonlace seedling. It had grown again—taller, stronger, its silver bloom now the size of his palm.

Everything is progressing, he realized. Alchemy. Cultivation. Rankings. Priscilla.

For the first time in two lifetimes, things were... working.

He didn't trust it.

But for now, he allowed himself to rest.

Class A Dormitory — Next Morning

The reassignment came with sunrise.

Nova stood before his new room—larger than the Class C quarters, better furnished, with a window overlooking the floating islands. His name had been added to the door overnight, fresh paint still drying.

NOVA ALMOND — CLASS A — ROOM 12

He touched the letters briefly, then opened the door.

Inside, a package waited on the desk. Academy uniform—Class A insignia, fine material, tailored to his measurements. A welcome note from the Class A administration. And a small crystal containing orientation materials for his new status.

Nova picked up the uniform, examining it.

Class A, he thought.

He changed quickly, the fabric settling against his skin like a second layer. In the small mirror, his reflection stared back—silver hair, mismatched eyes, sharp features, the crimson and gold of Class A marking him as someone who had climbed.

Not finished, he reminded himself. Not yet.

But closer.

Class A Lounge — Mid-Morning

The lounge was everything its reputation suggested.

Deep furniture, private study rooms, a constant supply of free food and drink. Students lounged in small groups, their conversations ranging from cultivation techniques to mission strategies to the latest gossip.

Nova entered to silence.

Every eye turned toward him—the Class C phenomenon, the mismatched eyes, the one who had climbed forty ranks in a month. He felt their curiosity, their suspicion, their grudging respect through Soul Perception.

Kaelen rose from a corner couch, a wide grin spreading across his face.

"Well, well. Look who finally made it." He crossed to Nova, pulling him into a rough embrace. "Class A. Took you long enough."

"Some of us had to work for it."

Kaelen laughed. "Bastard." He gestured at the lounge. "Come on. I'll introduce you to everyone who matters."

Class A Lounge — Afternoon

The introductions blurred together.

Names and faces, cultivations and superpowers, the subtle politics of the elite. Nova filed them all away, his All-Seeing Eye cataloging details for future use.

Seraphina nodded coolly but offered no warmth—they'd fought before, respected each other, but never befriended. Darius shook his hand with genuine approval, his stone-colored skin rough against Nova's palm. Rina grinned from across the room, her spatial sense clearly tracking his every movement.

And then—

"Nova Almond."

A voice he didn't recognize. Nova turned.

Sebastian stood in the lounge entrance, his expression unreadable. Behind him, Gabriel and Elara watched with cold interest.

"Sebastian." Nova's voice was flat. "I've heard of you."

"Likewise." Sebastian approached slowly, his movements deliberate. "Class C to Class A in one month. Thirty-nine ranks gained. Eighteen arena victories." He stopped an arm's length away. "Impressive."

"I've been busy."

"So I see." Sebastian studied him—those mismatched eyes, that calm expression, the utter lack of fear. "We should talk sometime. There are opportunities for people like us. People who climb."

Nova met his gaze.

"Maybe."

Sebastian smiled—thin, cold, utterly without warmth. "I'll hold you to that."

He turned and walked away, his companions following.

Kaelen appeared at Nova's elbow. "Careful with that one. He collects people like trophies."

"I noticed."

Nova's Room — Night

Priscilla had moved her things into his new room.

She sat on the larger bed, surrounded by her few possessions—clothes, books, a small potted plant that had been her first success in the greenhouse. The Moonlace seedling sat on the windowsill beside it, their glows mingling in the darkness.

"Class A," she murmured. "I still can't believe it."

"You'll be here soon."

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true." He sat beside her, pulling her close. "The pills will help. Your cultivation is already accelerating. In a month, maybe two, you'll be Class B. Then A."

She leaned against him, her head on his shoulder.

"And then?"

"Then we keep climbing. Together."

She smiled—warm, trusting, full of hope.

"I like that plan."

They sat together in the darkness, watching the artificial stars wheel overhead.
