Chapter 143 - Path of the Swarm

Charging recklessly into a fleet equipped with active void shields is a fool's errand. Zasz immediately took direct control of the primary Leviathan to coordinate a precision boarding maneuver. In this galaxy, boarding actions are the quintessential theme of naval warfare.

If the Overmind wanted viable Kroot genetic samples, a boarding party was the most logical choice. The Kroot Warspheres are colossal, and their naval-grade shields are notoriously resilient; trying to batter them down through external fire alone would be a tedious waste of biomass.

"Zasz, bridge the gap! All hands to the boarding pods!"

The Leviathan accelerated, its massive, barbed tentacles lashing out and piercing the hull of the Warsphere. The boarding action had begun.

Inside, the Warsphere was a labyrinthine hive of T'au Fire Caste auxiliaries and Kroot mercenaries. The Kroot may look like primitives, but their combat instincts are terrifying. A Kroot squad happened to be stationed right where the Leviathan's tentacles breached the corridor. As the swarm of Zerglings poured out of the organic tunnels, the Kroot met them head-on with their signature rifles and jagged blades.

Surprisingly, the Kroot held their ground far longer than expected.

Zerglings leapt from the walls, only to be sliced mid-air by lightning-fast counter-swings. These specific Kroot possessed green-tinted skin and incredible muscle density—their arms and thighs were thick with corded power.

"Did these Kroot devour Orks?" the Overmind wondered.

It certainly seemed so. They possessed the raw, brute strength of the Greenskins. As the skirmish continued, the differences between the Kroot became even more apparent. After downing a Zergling, one Kroot reached down, tore off a chunk of purple flesh, and shoved it into his beak while simultaneously firing his rifle at the next wave.

As he consumed the Zergling meat, his physiology began to shift in real-time. His skin hardened into a purple, chitinous shell; his pupils turned a sharp, predatory yellow, and a surge of Zerg-derived adrenaline made him move with unnatural speed.

And then... he felt it.

"Oh ho? You've connected to the network!"

The Overmind was delighted. By consuming the flesh and blood of the Swarm, the Kroot had inadvertently established a link to the Hive Mind. While the connection wasn't strong enough to grant total control, it allowed the Overmind to whisper directly into the mercenary's consciousness.

The Kroot froze. In his mind's eye, he saw a colossal, singular eye staring out from the void—the gaze of the Sovereign. It was a look that pierced through the boundless galaxy, and it made the Kroot's entire body tremble with primal terror.

His companions noticed his sudden paralysis. They shrieked in their native tongue, trying to pull him back as they retreated. Strangely, the Zerglings ignored the "infected" Kroot entirely, swarming around him to tear into his un-mutated comrades.

The Kroot stood like a statue in the middle of a purple sea of claws.

"Obey me," the Sovereign's voice boomed in the mercenary's skull.

The Kroot's body shook violently, locked in a dual torment of physical mutation and mental invasion. After several seconds of agonizing struggle, he suddenly doubled over and vomited. The half-digested Zergling meat, mixed with acidic bile, hit the floor. Instantly, the link to the Overmind snapped.

"Tsk. He actually spit it out?"

The purple tint on the Kroot's skin faded slightly as he regained his senses, but he wasn't free for long. The surrounding Zerglings immediately swarmed him, dragging him back into the Leviathan's tentacle-tunnel.

"Fine. If he won't be a puppet, he'll be a specimen. Catch him alive."

The Overmind was in no rush; he had all the time in the universe.

As the boarding action intensified, the T'au defense forces consolidated their firepower, momentarily suppressing the Zerg advance within the Warsphere. Simultaneously, the exterior of the fortress unleashed a devastating barrage against the Leviathan.

The Leviathan weathered the macro-cannon fire through sheer mass and layered armor. It didn't just stay attached; it used its massive bulk to ram the Warsphere, sending violent shockwaves through the structure. Interior decks buckled, and T'au warriors were thrown against ceilings by the sheer force of the impact.

Nearby, the rest of the T'au fleet was struggling. Multiple Leviathans and a cloud of Zerg flyers had descended upon them. Scourges wove through the defensive fire, detonating against the T'au ship shields in brilliant plasma bursts.

The T'au were being systematically dismantled. Their carrier wings couldn't even launch; the moment a hangar door opened, Scourges and Mutalisks were there to greet them.

"See! Commander, I told you!" the T'au biologist shouted over the alarms. "We shouldn't have attacked! That behemoth isn't alone—it's part of a massive, symbiotic super-organism!"

"Get this scientist out of my sight!" the commander roared, his patience finally snapping.

Once the guards dragged the biologist away, the commander forced himself to stay calm and analyze the sensor data. He began to categorize the xenos threats with cold, military efficiency.

The Mutalisks (Helios) were fast but lacked punch; the Scourges (Buzzards) were faster but suicidal. The Devourers and Guardians provided long-range suppression, while the Corruptors acted like high-speed predators, weaving through the fleet and causing the most damage to the cruisers.

"Categorize these units!" the Commander ordered. "Direct the heavy railguns to prioritize the capital-class bio-ships. All point-defense systems are to focus on the high-speed suicide units! Do not let them touch the hull!"

He was a veteran, and his efficiency showed. Within minutes, the T'au fleet's defensive fire became a coordinated wall of lead. The Scourges began detonating prematurely in the dense barrage, and the Corruptors were being picked off by the larger turrets.

"The situation is stabilizing," the Commander muttered.

It was the classic delusion of a commander facing the Swarm: I can turn the tables.

While the Corruptors and Scourges were the immediate threats, they were only the tip of the spear. The Leviathans were already tearing frigate-class ships apart with their tentacles, and more shadows were moving in the deep void.

"What are these things?" the Commander whispered. "They don't behave like a natural space-faring species."

"Do not let doubt cloud your mind, Commander," the Ethereal's voice came over the comms, steady and serene. "Whatever they are, the Path of the Greater Good will guide us through the darkness."
