Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Quiet Protector

POV: Cassian

Cassian Vale, the city moves around loud, restless waves, hornblaring, but she cut through it with a quiet focus. This morning, he saw her move with a determined energy, each step measured and purposeful, yet a subtle tension in her shoulders caught his eye immediately.

Even from this distance, he could see the small signs most people would miss. The way her fingers tensed slightly at her sides, like she was ready to react. The way her gaze constantly scanned reflections in windows without making it obvious. Survival instincts. Not paranoia. Not weakness. Experience. What has she truly been through, he wondered?

She was different from anyone he'd met in a long time. Not the type to flutter at attention, not the kind who clings to others' approval. She carried herself like she had fought for every inch of space and refused to let anyone take it. That kind of fire drew people in. Most would be intimidated; he was not. He was intrigued.

Cassian knows he has only known her for a short while, but even in their brief encounter, he could tell that she has a strength beneath her exterior. She has a quiet strength that sets her apart, even amid the city's confusion. He saw it in how she handled herself during the accidental meeting that morning—brushing off embarrassment and still managing a polite, composed reply. No dramatics. No self-pity. Just steady recovery.

She deserves better than what this city throws at her, he thought, tightening his grip on the steering wheel of his car. And I'm going to make sure she gets it quietly.

He still doesn't understand why he's doing what he's doing, but he keeps having this feeling like he should protect her since the day he met her, be there for her, stand in her corner as a friend, because he knows he has always had feelings for his childhood best friend, Seraphina. But she's always liked Kaelion, and who is he to want to compete with that?

A bus roared past, momentarily blocking his view. When it cleared, he found her again instantly; his eyes had already memorized her rhythm. She paused at a crosswalk, adjusting her bag's strap, and for a brief second, her expression was tired, but determined, the fatigue from years, not just a bad day, as her day was beginning. He saw the unmistakable tension in her posture, the way she paused, her gaze flicking toward the entrance and then quickly away, as if hoping not to see someone.

Cassian knew why she was here today: to resume her role as personal assistant to his best friend, Kaelion Thorne.

And he has followed her all morning without her knowing, and he still doesn't understand why he did that. Look at him here again this evening, in her company, to give her a ride home.

The way Kaelion's presence seemed to stir a mix of defiance and anxiety in her didn't escape Cassian's sharp eye. He could practically feel the brewing storm between them from here. And though he wasn't naive enough to think that storm could be tamed easily, he had a sinking feeling she needed someone in her corner.

Not that he is someone to fight her battles for her, he reminded himself. Just someone to make sure she doesn't get hurt along the way.

Cassian's instincts kicked in. He had known Kaelion long enough to recognize his ruthlessness, unpredictability, and ability to make people bend without realizing it. Kaelion didn't always mean to be harsh, but the world had shaped him into someone who respects only strength. And Elara, fiery, bold, and oblivious to the undercurrents swirling around her, would be a target for his attention, whether she liked it or not.

He parked in the company lot, stepped out of his car, adjusted his coat, kept his eyes on her, and followed behind as he passed the staff, who greeted him with polite nods and smiles. If she's going to make it through this place alive, mentally and emotionally, it won't be just her intelligence keeping her safe.

Just as he entered the executive hallway, he saw that Elara was about to step into the elevator, unaware of Cassian's presence or his silent watch. He noticed her shoulders stiffen. Her hands were clenched slightly by her side. Her jaw tightened. That small, human vulnerability tugged at him, though he knew better than to show it.

Cassian's lips pressed into a thin line. She can handle herself, I know that. But the world isn't fair to someone like her.

Kaelion told him about her, about the last interview, probably the day he first saw her in the company. And he said he wasn't going to hire her. But here she is. Which means he changed his mind; Kaelion never does.

That alone said more than Kaelion would ever admit.

Immediately after she entered the elevator to the office upstairs, he went up too. When he was about to enter Kaelion's glass office, he saw Elara standing there, and He stepped closer to her. Their proximity was enough to spark something intense, something Cassian couldn't quite read from here. But one thing was clear: Kaelion was intrigued.

And when Kaelion Thorne was intrigued, he rarely lost.

Cassian stood outside Kaelion's office door, hands in his coat pockets, staring at the polished wood as if debating something.

He'd been there for five minutes.

"Mr. Vale?"

Cassian turned. Kaelion's assistant stood there with a cup of coffee and a small paper bag.

"Sir, I didn't know you were here. I stepped out to get coffee, that's why I wasn't at my desk."

Cassian nodded. "You don't need to explain."

Adrian glanced between Cassian and the door, clearly confused. "Do you need anything? I can let him know you're here."

Cassian looked at the door again, jaw tightening slightly. "No. Tell him I stopped by. I'll come back."

Adrian blinked. Cassian never waited. But he just nodded. "Alright, sir."

Cassian turned to leave.

"Cassian?"

He froze.

Seraphina approached him, tablet in hand, surprise evident on her face.

"You're leaving?" she asked.

"Just stopped by."

"You came to see Kaelion... and you're not going in?"

"He's busy."

She studied him. "Since when has that stopped you?"

He didn't answer.

"I work here now," she said softly. "So you'll see me around more."

"I heard."

She hesitated. "I wanted to be close to… people I care about."

His jaw tightened.

"You could be running your father's company," he said.

"Easy isn't always what people want," she replied.

Silence stretched between them.

"I should get back," she said. "Kaelion will need me; we have this new project we are working on together."

Cassian stepped aside. As she passed, her shoulder brushed his coat.

"Cassian," she said quietly. "I'm glad you came. Even if you didn't go in."

He didn't answer.

Because if he spoke, it would sound like something he couldn't take back.

Seraphina walked toward Kaelion's office, posture straight, expression composed, perfect, professional, untouchable.

Cassian watched her until she disappeared inside.

Only then did he leave, thinking to himself, "I know came to pick Elara from work. I think she can take care of herself."

And this time, he didn't slow down.
