It felt like they'd somehow crossed an invisible boundary into an unknown territory that didn't exist on maps. The air grew heavier against his skin, even within the car.
Miu leaned toward the window, trying to peer through the fog. "…I don't see anything."
"Wait," Stella said quietly. "We're coming up on something…"
A few seconds later, the first house appeared.
It emerged from the fog slowly, like something dragged out of a blurry painting…or a town that was reconstructed from a dream as best as the creator could.
A low wooden building with a slanted roof and shuttered windows stood alone at the edge of town. A lantern hung outside the entrance, but the flame inside barely flickered, giving off a weak yellow glow that made the fog around it look sickly.
But as they approached it, the veil parted slightly, revealing a narrow road that could be called a main street, opening up to houses on both sides.
