Marco: "Update. Subject and Massimo left restaurant 23:00. Dropped her at apartment. He went to penthouse. Separate locations confirmed."


At least tonight she was safe from him.


I was about to respond when I heard footsteps in the hallway.


He appeared in the doorway, still dressed in the suit he'd worn to court that morning. Tie loosened. Jacket over his arm. He looked exhausted but excited, the particular combination of a man who'd won something important and couldn't quite come down from it yet.


"Shouldn't you be with Sofia? Celebrating?"


"She went to bed hours ago. Smart woman." He crossed to the sideboard, poured his own scotch. "Besides, I wanted to tell you in person. The judge dismissed it."
