Enzo didn't look at him. He kept his eyes on me, calm and absolute, as if Massimo hadn't spoken at all.


"You are a distraction," he said, his tone carrying no cruelty, which made it worse. Cruelty could be argued with. This was simply fact, delivered by a man who had never needed to raise his voice to end a conversation. "My son has obligations that extend beyond what he currently understands. You will stop seeing him. You will not come to the wedding. And you will leave Sicily within the week."


Massimo's voice was hard. I had never heard that particular register from him before, not the cold menace he used on people he wanted to frighten, not the performative bravado of the club. This was something rawer. A son who had reached his limit.
