Chapter 89 - The Host

Valentina's POV

I stared at the black screen of the phone for a long time after the call ended. The battery icon glowed a reassuring, if weak, green at fifteen percent. It was enough. It had to be.

I severed the connection, wrapping the charger cord around the brick and shoving it deep into the bottom of the clutch, burying it beneath the lipstick and the broken earring.

I shoved the clutch back under the bed, smoothing the duvet cover to hide any sign of disturbance. Then I stood in the center of the room and forced myself to breathe, counting the inhale and exhale until my heart rate slowed from a frantic gallop to a manageable canter.

I checked the time again. 2:14 AM.

He had been gone forty minutes.

Too long for a simple trip to the kitchen, unless he had stopped to scrub the blood from his collar, or perhaps to inform his brother that their home now harbored the very complication the Family had been trying to avoid.
