Chapter 5 - Chapter 5:Eight Hours Away

Railway stations are always a chaotic symphony—the blaring announcements, the piercing train whistles, and the constant hum of the crowd. Yet, amidst all that noise, the world around Arindam and Bharsha felt eerily still.

Bharsha sat by the window of the train. Five minutes to departure. Arindam stood on the platform outside. Both were trying their hardest to keep a smile pinned to their faces, as if pretending the goodbye didn't hurt.

"Don't you dare cry," Bharsha warned, her voice trembling slightly.

"Me? Never," Arindam replied, though his eyes told a different story.

Then came the final whistle. Their hearts skipped a beat in unison. As the train began to pull away, Arindam didn't run alongside it. He simply stood his ground. He knew this distance couldn't be measured by how fast he could run.

A New City, A Familiar LonelinessThe city was a blur of newness for Bharsha. New college, new faces, a new routine. During the day, the laughter of new friends kept her occupied, but when the sun set and the hostel room grew dark—the void became palpable. She would stare out of her window at the night sky and wonder if, in another city, a boy was staring back at the same stars.

Arindam called every night at 10 PM. It became an unwritten law of their lives. But some nights the network would fail, or they would both be too exhausted to speak. The conversations started to shrink.

"Did you eat?"

"Yes. You?"

"Hmm."

"How was your day?"

"Same old class."

Silence followed. It felt as if they were running out of words to bridge the gap.

The Invisible WallOne night, Bharsha was laughing during a video call. A classmate was standing beside her, cracking a joke. Arindam's jaw tightened. He hung up abruptly and didn't call or text for the rest of the night.

The next day, Bharsha messaged: "Are you mad?"

Hours later, the reply came: "No. Just busy."

They both knew that "busy" was the heaviest excuse in the world.

The ConfessionThree days later, Arindam couldn't hold it in anymore. He called her and asked directly, "Who was that guy?"

Bharsha sighed. She had expected this. "Rahul. My project partner."

"You two seemed... quite close."

After a pause, Bharsha asked softly, "Do you not trust me, Arindam?"

Arindam took a deep breath. "I trust you. But sometimes I get terrified... terrified that in your bright new world, my space is becoming smaller and smaller."

It wasn't an easy admission. Bharsha's heart softened instantly. "My world may have grown bigger, Arindam, but the center of it is still you. That hasn't changed."

A Rainy NightThat night, it rained in both cities simultaneously. Bharsha went up to the hostel roof and video-called him.

"Look, it's raining here too."

Arindam stood by his window. "Yeah. It's the same sky after all."

Bharsha smiled. "Eight hours of road between us, but the rain doesn't care about distances."

"I'm scared, Bharsha," Arindam whispered.

"I am too. But the fear is what makes this so precious."

"Will we make it?"

"Only if you don't let go of my hand."

They both reached out toward their screens. They couldn't touch, but for a moment, they felt the warmth of each other's souls.

The PromiseFrom the next day, they made a new set of rules. They realized that love isn't just a feeling—it's a conscious decision to stay.

One long video call every week.

Meeting at least once a month.

Never letting a misunderstanding last more than 24 hours.

The distance didn't shrink, and the clouds didn't fully disappear. But they learned that whether it's eight hours of travel, eight hundred misunderstandings, or eight thousand doubts—as long as trust is the foundation, the seat by the window will never be empty.

Because someone always leaves, just so they can have the joy of coming back.
