Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 : Diary

Keifer's fingers brushed against something heavy at the very bottom of the box.

It was a diary, its leather cover cracked and peeling with age.

The spine was frayed, and as he lifted it, some pages fluttered-worn thin by time, while others were stiff and wrinkled, clearly marked by tears that had dried long ago.

"It's her diary," Keifer whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

Sophia leaned in close, her breath hitching. They sat on the floor of that small, dusty room and opened the first page.

The handwriting was large and loopy-the careful, innocent script of an eight-year-old girl who still believed the world was a beautiful place.

August 12th

Dear Diary,

Today was the BEST Sunday ever! Mom and Dad took me to the big shopping mall. We stayed there all day. I got a new dress that spins in a circle, and Dad let me have three scoops of strawberry ice cream. Three! Mom pretended to be mad but she was smiling.

Dad told me a big secret today. He said we are moving to a place called Manila! He bought a new house there. He showed me a picture and it's so, so huge and beautiful.

It has big windows and I think I can see the clouds from there. Dad says I'll have my own room with a big bookshelf.

Next Sunday is my 8th birthday. I think it's going to be the happiest day of my whole life. I'm so lucky. I love my Mom and Dad so much.

The innocence of the words felt like a physical weight on Keifer's heart. He looked around the room, realizing this was the last time Jay had been truly, perfectly happy.

"She was so excited," Sophia whispered, a small, sad smile touching her lips as she read about the ice cream. "She was just a little girl who loved her life."

Keifer turned the page, his fingers lingering on the paper. "She had everything, Soph. Look at how she talked about them. She felt so safe."

They sat in the silence of the room for a moment, letting the image of that happy eight-year-old girl sink in before they dared to turn the page to see what happened next.

Keifer turned the page carefully, almost afraid that the delicate paper might crumble.

The handwriting on this page was even more energetic, filled with the kind of excitement that only a child on their birthday can possess. There were even little hand-drawn hearts and stars decorating the margins.

August 19th

Dear Diary,

I was right! Today WAS the happiest day ever! I woke up in our new house in Manila and the sun was so bright. It felt like the clouds were right outside my window, just like Dad said. Mom came in singing 'Happy Birthday' and she had a crown for me to wear.

The party was so big! All my new friends came, and we had the biggest chocolate cake I've ever seen. It had eight candles and I blew them all out in one breath! My new toys are amazing-I got a beautiful dollhouse and a music box that plays a song that sounds like falling stars. And my dress... oh, Diary, it's the prettiest pink dress with sparkles on the collar. I felt like a real princess.

Mom and Dad stayed by my side the whole time. Dad kept spinning me around and saying I'm his greatest treasure. I wish every day could be just like today. I'm going to sleep now because I want to dream about today all over again. I hope Mom and Dad know how much I love them.

Sophia leaned her head on Keifer's shoulder, a soft sob escaping her. "She had the whole world, Keifer. She was so loved."

Keifer ran his thumb over the word treasure. The contrast between this bright, shimmering memory and the girl who currently walked through their house like a shadow was devastating. In this diary, Jay was vibrant, hopeful, and cherished.

"She wasn't always cold," Keifer murmured, his voice cracking. "She was full of light.

Someone-or something-just took it all away from her."

He looked at the next page, wondering how much longer this happiness would last in the ink of her childhood.

Keifer turned the page, and the ink seemed to dance with the energy of a child who had found a new reason to love the world.

The entry was much longer than the others, taking up two full pages with hurried, enthusiastic loops.

September 4th

Dear Diary,

Today was my very first day at my new school in Manila! I was so nervous this morning that my tummy felt like it had butterflies dancing in it. Mom made me my favorite blueberry pancakes to make me feel brave, and Papa held my hand the whole way to the car. When he dropped me off at the gate, he kissed my forehead and told me I was the smartest, bravest girl in the city. He promised to be there the second school ended, and that made the butterflies go away a little bit.

But Diary, the best part wasn't the pancakes or the car ride. The best part was SOPHIA!

I was sitting alone at a desk, trying to look busy with my new pens, when this girl with messy pigtails and a huge smile ran up to me. She didn't even ask if she could sit there, she just did! She is the most talkative person I have ever met in my whole life. I think she said a thousand words in one minute! She told me about her favorite stickers, her dog, her brother, and how she once tried to eat a crayon just to see what color it tasted like (she said it was gross).

She is like a little ball of sunshine. She's so bubbly that I feel like I'm laughing even when I'm just listening to her. She is so kind, too-she saw that I didn't have a snack, so she gave me half of her cookies and told me that 'besties always share.' We are officially best friends now!

We did have one tiny fight at recess because she wanted to play tag and I wanted to read under the tree, and she made a funny face at me and said I was a 'grandma.' I got a little mad and didn't talk to her for five minutes, but then she came back with a yellow flower she picked from the grass and said she was sorry for being a 'monkey.' I couldn't stay mad at her. She makes everything feel like a party.

Papa was waiting for me right at the gate just like he said. I ran to him and told him all about Sophia. I told him I think she's my soulmate friend. I hope every day is like this. I hope Sophia and I stay besties forever and ever and ever!

Sophia was sobbing openly now, her fingers tracing the words soulmate friend.

"I was such a brat," she laughed through her tears. "I remember that yellow flower. I had to sneak into the forbidden garden area to get it. I almost got in trouble, but she looked so sad that I couldn't stand it."

Keifer felt a lump in his throat. He looked at the peeling, filthy walls of the room they were currently sitting in-a room that belonged to a girl who now spoke in whispers and hid her heart behind a wall of ice.

"She loved you so much, Soph," Keifer said, his voice straining. "You were her world before everything else fell apart."

He looked at the bottom of the page, where Jay had drawn two stick figures holding hands under a big, bright sun. It was the last page that looked so clean and happy.
