Chapter 39 - Chapter 39 : Frozen keifer

Back in the bedroom, Keifer remained exactly where he had stood when Jay bolted.

He was a statue carved from heat and disbelief.

Slowly, almost involuntarily, he raised his hand and pressed his palm against the center of his bare chest-the exact spot where her small, warm hand had rested.

They hadn't kissed. The door had swung open just a breath too soon.

But the weight of that "almost" was heavier than a thousand completed kisses.

He wasn't ashamed of the impulse; he was simply paralyzed by a new, overwhelming shyness. For the first time, the Golden Boy didn't feel like a predator or a protector-he felt like a boy with his first crush, his skin still tingling from the ghost of her touch.

The car ride back to the estate was a masterclass in suffocating, shy tension.

Keifer sat in the back seat, staring fixedly out the window at the passing trees.

His jaw wasn't tight with anger, but with the effort to keep his face neutral while his heart raced.

Jay sat as far as possible on the other side, her fingers nervously twisting a loose thread on her dress.

Every time their eyes accidentally met in the rearview mirror, they both looked away instantly, their faces deepening into a matching, dusty rose.

Keifer smirk.

Sophia, sitting in the front near driver, was practically vibrating.

She tried to hum a song, then tried to talk about the weather, but the silence in the back was impenetrable.

"Gosh, you two are like two statues in a museum," Sophia joked, trying to break the ice. "Did the sea air turn your brains to salt? Say something!"

Keifer only cleared his throat, unable to find his usual snarky voice, and Jay offered a soft, stuttered reply about the scenery.

They were wrapped in a cocoon of mutual embarrassment that made even breathing feel too loud.

When the car finally pulled up to the grand entrance of the Watson estate, a surprising sight awaited them.

Cheska was standing by the front steps, her luggage already packed into a waiting car.

The air bristled for a moment, but as Jay stepped out, she realized Cheska's expression wasn't one of malice. She looked... humbled.

Cheska walked straight toward Jay. Before anyone could react, she reached out and pulled Jay into a brief, genuine hug.

"I'm leaving, Jay," Cheska whispered. She pulled back with a soft, rueful smile. "I came to say goodbye. And... I wanted to apologize. For everything. I was wrong about you."

Jay was momentarily stunned.

The girl who had tried to sabotage her was looking at her with real regret.

But Jay, true to her nature, didn't hold onto the bitterness. She reached out and squeezed Cheska's hands, a soft, radiant smile breaking across her face.

"No need for apology, Cheska," Jay said gently. "I truly wish you the very best. I hope you find exactly what you're looking for."

Sophia stood in stunned silence.

It was a testament to Jay's heart; she had managed to melt the frozen heart of someone as cold as Cheska just by being herself.

Keifer stood back, watching Jay.

The shyness from the car ride was still there, but it was being overtaken by a profound sense of pride.

The way the sunlight hit her face as she forgave her enemy made his chest ache.

Cheska then turned to Keifer. She saw the way he was looking at Jay-a look of pure, quiet adoration he had never once given her.

"I'm sorry to you too, Keifer," she said softly. "For trying to force something that wasn't there."

Keifer didn't offer a cold remark. Instead, he gave her a small, sincere smile-the first real smile he had ever shared with her. "It's okay, Cheska. Good luck out there."

As Cheska's car pulled away, the three of them stood on the driveway. The house felt different-the shadows felt a little less heavy.

The heavy air of the city didn't feel so oppressive anymore.

With a silent nod to her, they all turned and headed into the grand foyer of the estate.

They hadn't even cleared the threshold when his mother, appeared.

She didn't wait for the staff; she rushed forward, her face etched with genuine guilt.

"Oh, my darlings! You're back so soon!" she said, pulling both Jay and Keifer into a tight, maternal hug.

She pulled back, looking at her son with a frown. "I am so sorry, Jay. I feel terrible that your holiday was ruined because of this boy's work."

Keifer looked away, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth while his ears turned a tell-tale, violent shade of red. He remembered exactly how "ruined" the holiday felt when he was hovering an inch away from Jay's face.

"It's fine, Mom," he muttered, his voice unusually thick. "We... we made the most of the time we had."

Sophia, leaning against the doorframe, let out a loud, theatrical cough. "Ruined? Mom, please. They were having the time of their lives. If anything, the work is the only thing that saved them from melting into the floorboards."

The foyer erupted into a lighthearted argument, with his mother laughing and swatting Sophia's arm while Jay watched, her heart feeling fuller than it had in years.

For a moment, they weren't a contract marriage; they were just a family.

A few minutes later, the laughter faded into the quiet of the upper hallway.

Keifer insisted on carrying the luggage himself, trailing two steps behind Jay.

The silence was different now-not cold, but heavy with the shared secret of the morning. Jay could feel him behind her, his steady presence acting like a magnet.

"Jay! Oh, Jay, I forgot!"

His mother's voice echoed up from the bottom of the stairs. Jay stopped and turned her head to respond, "Yes, Mom?"

But as she turned, her heel caught in the intricate weave of the Persian rug.

With a small gasp, her balance vanished. She began to tilt backward.

"Careful!" Keifer dropped the bags with a heavy thud and lunged forward.

He caught her, his strong arms hooking around her waist. But the force of his save pulled her directly into him. Because he had been rushing and was still dressed casually, his upper shirt buttons were undone, the fabric fluttering open.

Jay didn't just hit his chest; her lips made direct, soft contact with the bare, warm skin of his collarbone.

A literal shock, like a bolt of static electricity, jolted through both of them.

Jay froze, her breath hitching, her lips still pressed against the heat of his skin.

She could feel the rapid, frantic thrum of his pulse right against her mouth. Keifer's heart hammered so hard she felt it vibrating through his entire frame.

Both of them turned a brilliant, matching shade of crimson, paralyzed by the accidental intimacy. The shyness from the car ride returned tenfold, locking them in a breathless, wide-eyed state.

Keifer was completely frozen. His hands stayed locked on her waist, his body turned to stone, his mind unable to process anything other than the soft touch of her lips against his bare chest.

"Honestly," a voice drawled from the end of the hall. Sophia was standing there, leaning against the wall.

They both pulled apart instantly.

"Don't mind me. Keep going. This is way better than anything I've seen on Netflix lately. Is this the season finale?"

The spell didn't break. Keifer was still frozen, his eyes wide, his breath hitched.

His mother, following up the stairs, immediately reached Sophia and gave her a sharp, playful smack on the shoulder.

"Sophia! Stop teasing them!"

But then, she looked at the two of them- Jay's face pure red and keifer's ears giving company -and she couldn't help a little giggle herself.

"Though, I must say, Keifer... you look like you've seen a ghost. Or perhaps something much better."

Sophia cackled, rubbing her shoulder. "See? Mom agrees! It's a romantic cliffhanger!"
